Opinions on this as a symbol for the schizophrenic and psychotic spectrum community? It’s simple, with the wave in the middle symbolizing positive and negative symptoms, and the arrows pointing out symbolizing the vastness, scope, and diversity of the community?
I wanted to choose something that’s easily replicated and recognizable.
On a related note, what color do you feel should represent the community? I’ve seen silver and purple used to represent us in a few occasions but nothing widespread. I personally love purple as a color for us.
Schizophrenia awareness month prompt challenge day 5 - negative symptoms
Negative symptoms means that something which is supposed to be present has been taken away. A neurotypical person is able to feel motivated, happy and energized. If a schizophrenic person isn’t, that’s an example of negative symptoms as emotions and abilities which would be present in a neurotypical person are lacking or reduced in intensity. There’s many examples of negative symptoms, but those most commonly discussed are:
Flat affect/lack of appropriate emotional responses:
Many schizophrenic people struggle to express their emotions and may seem “flat” or “neutral” in their body language, tone and facial expressions no matter what they’re talking about. They may seem bored, cold and uncaring when they aren’t which may lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings.
Avolition/lack of motivation:
Lack of motivation makes it really hard to complete demanding projects and tasks, and schizophrenic people who struggle with this symptom may have trouble fulfilling responsibilities and starting/finishing new projects.
Lethargy/lack of energy:
Schizophrenic people often have less energy than non schizophrenic people which can make it hard to function in a productivity minded society. Schizophrenic people who struggle with this symptom may spend a lot of their time in bed and will struggle to find the energy to do even the most basic things, let alone showing up and doing well in school or at work.
Alogia/lack of speech:
Schizophrenic people who suffer from this symptom will speak less than most people and when and if they do speak, it’s in short sentences and one word answers. This can make it hard to be a part of a social environment.
Anhedonia/lack of pleasure:
Many schizophrenic people struggle to feel happy and satisfied which makes it hard to keep up joy based activities like hobbies and personal interests. If nothing triggers a pleasant emotional response in you, or makes you feel happy and excited, it’s a struggle to keep doing it.
Any combination of these symptoms can lead to a wide array of problems, such as social isolation, trouble with personal hygiene and other basic self care, trouble with or inability to manage work and school, sexual problems and so on.
The important thing to remember is that negative symptoms are a real, acknowledged part of schizophrenia and that it isn’t your fault if you’re schizophrenic and experience any of the above. You’re not lazy, or uncaring or boring - you’re suffering from a mental illness which is causing real and tangible issues to your ability to function. Please have patience with yourself and remember that if you struggle with any of the above, it’s not your fault. It’s not common knowledge, but all these things are a part of schizophrenia and it’s not your fault if you struggle with them.

Wow. Fucking classy. Glad to know nobody’s moderating this shit against ableism??? Just because the source material is ableist doesn’t mean that we have to stoop to its level as fans. Schizophrenic is not an insult, a negative, or a something dangerous to be around. Nor is it something one can be “slightly.” Psychosis doesn’t inherently mean dangerous or violent. I’m psychotic and it just makes me afraid, because I see stuff that startles me. Overall, people who are schizophrenic and/or psychotic are far more likely to be VICTIMS of violence than to perpetrate it, and obviously we live with stigma like this every day. But glad to know that schizophrenia and psychosis are the worst things y'all can think of dating.

I strongly disagree. Actual physical and mental limitations and impairments which are mostly or completely outside our control and which severely affect a persons ability to do what most people would qualify as “doing something which your life” exist. They’re not an exaggeration or an excuse. They exist. Severe disabilities exist. Severe chronic illnesses exist. Severe mental illnesses exist. Some people really do have limitations which make them incapable of working and/or studying, and as one of those people, I really hate the implication that it’s always your own fault if you can’t conform to the expectations of society.
this and i would like to add on that the concept that anyone has to be useful to be worth anything is so harmful and even if someone is ablebodied and neurotypical, they don’t have to do anything if they don’t want to. the expectation that unless you can be profited off of by other people you’re a mistake is wrong. everyone regardless of their contribution to society is worth something. obviously, you shouldn’t be an asshole but people are inherently valuable and sometimes it’s okay to just exist
Good morning y'all lads and gals I am finally going back to school to finish my education once and for all, wish me luck! it’s my first day back into academics for the first time in over 3 years, hope I can get back into the daily grind of school work and projects like I used to be able to back in freshman year I was off the ground running making huge strides, and I will take off this year too. I have to step up to the plate and finish like I should have done and been doing, but now I got 4 month time to crack down on my shit, Get ready for me world I’m fucking coming for you!!!!!
Schizophrenia spectrum symptom categories
Schizophrenia spectrum conditions affect about 1.5% of the population. Symptoms can vary, but at their core, schizophrenia spectrum disorders will have positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms.
Positive: positive symptoms are symptoms are symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions. You can think of them as additional experiences out of the realm of normal human experience.
Negative symptoms: negative symptoms are symptoms of absence, and can be classified as primary or secondary. A primary negative symptom is directly caused by the disease and a secondary negative symptom is cause by another symptom. An example of a negative symptom is social isolation or hygiene difficulty.
Cognitive symptoms: schizophrenia causes cognitive impairments, and scientific research has lead to it being proposed that schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental disorder.

It’s ok to have days where it feels Wrong again, even when you’re better and healthier. These things happen. It doesn’t necessarily mean that all of your progress has gone down the drain and you’re back at step one. We get into a funk sometimes. It’s ok.

Types of reactions when you tell people you’re schizophrenic.
The ignorant one: “So… schizophrenia? Do you mean you’ve got like, a second evil personality?” This person has a completely incorrect idea of what schizophrenia is that they’re very unwilling to give up.
The scared one: “Schizophrenics… aren’t they dangerous? Have you hurt someone? Are you violent? Should I be scared, haha?” This person will likely change their behavior towards you after hearing about your diagnosis and will generally do their best to keep their distance.
The fascinated one: “Wow, that’s SO interesting… What’s it like? Do you hear voices? What do they say? Are they saying something about me?” This person will treat you as a human science experiment and will ask you a 100 invasive questions about your illness if they get the chance.
The edgy one: “We’re all a little crazy… I’ve got a pretty dark mind too, haha. Normal people scare me, you get what I mean?” This person will act like their fascination with serial killers and horror movies somehow equals being schizo spec.
The incredulous one: “But you really don’t LOOK schizophrenic… You seem completely normal to me? I mean, I’m pretty sure I would have noticed if you had something like that. I’m pretty sure you don’t have that, actually. If you do have it you must be very high functioning, right?” This person seems to think that mental illness is immediately visible to everyone and will likely continue to invalidate you if you don’t fulfill all the horror movie stereotypes.
The spiritual one: “But what if it’s actually demons or ghosts or gods? What if you really have special powers? What if you can see everything as it really is and I’m actually the crazy one?” This person will treat your delusions and hallucinations as interesting thought experiments or as props for their own spiritual beliefs with zero regards for how their “interesting theories” might affect your mental health.
The one you should aim to be: “Thanks for trusting me enough to tell me this. What’s having schizophrenia like for you? Is there anything I can do, don’t do or do differently to make things easier on you?” This person may not know much about schizophrenia, but they are willing to listen, learn and do their best to support you.

Even if it was a hallucination or delusion, you still experienced it as real. You’re allowed to be traumatized, you’re allowed to be scarred, don’t let people tell you that your trauma is invalid.

I know it can feel a little weird not “fitting in” with schizophrenia-spectrum posts/community while still being shunned from your own non-psychotic mentally ill community for your psychosis!
