friend of mine recommended a video essay that's like 5 hours long about why it's currently a whole Thing for fascists to claim they only eat meat and demonize vegetables etc etc, and it's genuinely quite well researched in many places and contains some fascinating history and has made me feel very weird about my status as an adult who enjoys drinking milk. but I've not finished it and I genuinely don't know if I will because at one point the ol' "you can't say you care about animals and also eat animals" chestnut got dropped by the white vegan essayist and it put such a bad taste in my mouth that I had to leave instantly

Companies can’t be allowed to say whatever they want in adverts, and when asked to pony up pull “it was just a joke, bro”. To use a slightly less ridiculous example, Fallout 76. One of the preorder editions can with a canvas backpack. But when they finally shipped, the durable canvas backpacks somehow became flimsy nylon. Complaints to publisher Bethesda got the response that the canvas version advertised was a prototype that was too expensive to make, so they handed out the cheap imitations instead. It took like two years in the courts for Bethesda to give people what they actually pay for. And they won because advertising law says you have to deliver on what you promise, even if it’s a Harrier jet. Introducing any level of “it’s just a joke” makes that effectively meaningless.

i think liberals learned about the Nazis doing book burnings in middle school and saw modern republicans banning books in their libraries and instead of getting the correct takeaway of "fascist governments have a vested interest in censoring and destroying literature that undermines their politics" they walked away with "physical books are sacred objects and harming them in any way for any reason is sacrilege". you see it with the performative outrage over those old tweets about people cutting paperbacks in half to fit in their luggage, or people rallying against outdated textbooks being shredded for minor thoughtcrimes like "being wrong and racist".

but probably the most annoying incarnation of this is the thing Anthropic is doing/has done where they mass buy and destructively scan shitloads of books. fuck r/redscarepod but this thread serves as an excellent snapshot of the kind of reactionary attitude im talking about. lots of bemoaning the downfall of civilization and RETVRN-posting about libraries while completely ignoring the fact that nobody was reading or buying these books, and if they were, it's because they were popular enough that a single copy being destroyed has no impact whatsoever on that book being available. the "rare books" being destroyed here are not one-off printings of the Gutenberg bible, they're, like, Microsoft Office 94 For Dummies
