Wangxian be out here having their little romance right on top of Nie Mingjue’s psychological horror story
One day this fandom will have a reckoning on how it likes to blame Jin Xixuan's death on Wei Wuxian—whether by maliciousness or a "loss of control"—while ignoring the fact that Jin Zixuan died because he lunged at Wei Wuxian with a drawn sword because he was angry that Wei Wuxian told him that he doesn't trust him after he refused to tell Wei Wuxian whether or not he was a part of the ambush his cousin set up after Wei Wuxian told him to keep his distance from him after he told Wei Wuxian to stop defending himself against an ambush that he showed up to and was plainly told was put together to kill Wei Wuxian after he had already been bodily pushing Wei Wuxian around to protect his cousin. But all of that is supposed to be forgiven and forgotten because the reason he wanted Wei Wuxian to ignore all logic and put his life in danger was for Jiang Yanli's temporary happiness? Lol. Lmao even.
Returning to this cause I really need y’all to understand how Wei Wuxian’s reaction was not in the wrong or at fault and exactly how depraved the Jin Clan is.
While mdzs isn’t set during a specific historical time period and thus is loose on many customs and traditions, one thing mxtx carries over is that inviting a person into your home makes them untouchable for as long as they are your guest. Jin Zixun took advantage of the fact that Wei Wuxian was invited to the one month celebration to ambush him, but he intentionally ambushes him on the way to the celebration, not at the celebration. This is because more than just ruining the mood, to attack an invited guest in their own home would shatter the Jin Clan’s reputation and turn them into social pariah. After all, who would want to be the guest of a clan known for slaughtering guests—let alone become their ally! Jin Zixuan says as much to his cousin when he shows up, cause even though the ambush didn’t happen at Koi Tower, it still was a very socially unacceptable, reputation-ruining move by a close relative who supposedly cares about him:
Jin ZiXuan, “You clearly know that I’m not that kind of person! He might not necessarily be the one who cursed you with Hundred Holes either. Why are you so rash? I was the one who invited Wei WuXian to A-Ling’s full-month celebration anyways. If this is the way you do things, where does that leave me? Where does it leave my wife?”
—Chapt. 76: Nightfall, exr
Nevermind just the ambush, this exploitation of the host-guest social contract is very reminiscent of the QishanWen “inviting” the clan heirs and junior disciples to their clan in order to mistreat them. The audience and characters all know that the disciples are really hostages, but as long as the veneer of “hospitality” was maintained, none of the clans were willing to mobilize against the QishanWen, even after their children almost died. After all, they didn’t die, so who’s to say that the QishanWen weren’t simply bad hosts who were, nonetheless, still bound by the traditional rules of conduct keeping them in check? Only through Wei Wuxian's and Lan Wangji's actions is the facade of the host-guest social contract maintained long enough for the two to be rescued and recuperate in their homes before the Sunshot Campaign began. Had a single heir actually died, would the cultivation world have still sat on their hands for those few weeks until the QishanWen marched on Lotus Pier?
Madam Yu laughed bitterly, “You do remember, but there’s no use if you simply remember. Wei Ying, he really can’t take it unless he stirs up some trouble, can he? If I had known, I would’ve made him stay in Lotus Pier properly and not go outside. Could Wen Chao really have dared to do anything to the two young masters of the GusuLan Sect and the LanlingJin Sect? Even if he did, it’d mean that they ran out of luck. Since when was it your turn to play the hero?”
—Chapt. 56: Poisons, exr
Because of this, Wei Wuxian reacting as he did to the Qiongqi Path ambush was entirely justified, as he was a guest besieged by his own hosts. That idiot Jin Zixuan rushes in to downplay the gravity of the situation in favor of keeping up appearances for his wife’s sake is what made the entire situation unsalvageable. Why should the ambushed guest follow the host into his home after being attacked along his route? Why should Wei Wuxian maintain the Jin Clan’s image of gracious hosts just because Jin Zixuan wants to make his wife happy? Why does Jin Zixuan think he—and his clan—is above reproach and that he is justified in seizing Wei Wuxian’s cooperation by force? Jin Zixuan was always going to die, not simply because of his own impulsive actions or his arrogant belief in his clan’s right to do whatever they want with no consequences but also because, narratively, his death was needed to clear a way for the Jin Clan to escape this social taboo unscathed.
Imagine what would have happened had Jin Zixuan not died in the ambush: he would have to go back and explain to his wife why her little brother never showed up. He would likely demand to know why tf his father agreed to an ambush on his son’s one month celebration. The news would get out that the Jin Clan uses invitations to ambush guests. How many banquets would they be able to host after this? The nameless cultivators may not be brave enough to completely break away from the Jin Clan’s sphere of influence, but they most certainly would never let their guards down enough to be used as pawns anymore. But because Jin Zixuan died and Wei Wuxian didn’t, Jin Guangshan and Jin Guangyao are able to spin their actions of plotting against a guest into one of a guest plotting them, as a guest attacking their host is just as taboo as a host attacking their guest. Thus the Jin Clan successfully use Jin Zixuan’s death to secure their place as leaders of the cultivation world through the justification of "righteous fury."
This victory could only be achieved by the blood of their heir, and what does Jin Guangshan do in the aftermath while his wife and daughter-in-law sit mourning over his son’s still-unburied coffin? He hosts another banquet.
@optimisticmiraclefest reposting this because that last bit is great commentary. Jin Guangyao and Jin Guangshan sacrificed their sons to flex their dominance over the cultivation world. The lengths that power-hungry people will go to to gain more power…
This is unironically what the loudest voices in the fandom think mdzs is about:

Hello scummies ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ You might have seen this on Twitter already but in case you haven’t, this is my humble translation of the new extras from the CN hardcover release of svsss🥳
It’s by no means perfect, so feel free to share your thoughts, your feedback really helps me improve!
There are seven parts to this + afterword by mxtx! I’ll be updating one part a day~ (update: TL completed as of 11/09 💚 I added a Translator’s Foreword and some T/N’s at the end.)
Thank you to my friend Tea @teamunee for their support for me to begin this project╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

Translator’s Foreword Hi hi~ o(⸝⸝•̀∀•́⸝⸝)o Thank you so much for reading my translation of the new SVSSS extras from the CN hardcover relea
So excited to share my entries for the 2025 MXTX Food Zine! 😍
This year I have my Apple Rose Tart recipe for Apple of My Eye - a fluffy follow-up to my cottagecore Wangxian fic An Apple a Day...:
And my Cloud Recesses Culinary School fic, Crush on Choux - featuring Choux au Craquelin Bunnies with White Chocolate & Black Sesame Cream filling:
Check out the above recipes, as well as the inspired fics and adorable art in the latest edition of the @mxtxfoodzine here!
Know what I'll be making at the weekend.
Also... I see you OP. I see what you did there. An au where LWJ will actually eat the rabbits he gifted him! Lmaooooo!
Erm.. guys? I think I know how the Xuanwu of Slaughter came into existence. Someone decided to go off script with the recipe and make their own bunny turtle shape and a MONSTER was born
I also didn't put enough spacing between them so they all ended up sniffing each other's butts and came out looking like something from a horror film.
BUT
The chocolate and sesame cream was soo good. I won't horrify you with the results... Which was completely my bad for messing with the bun shape lmao!
My attempt might have looked ugly on the outside, but damn were they tasty as hell on the inside. Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe and fanwork to go with it!
They still look good! Funnily enough it nearly was choux au craquelin turtles and then I changed my mind when I realised how cute it would be if WWX gifted LWJ edible bunnies 😆
Next time, just make sure you have an entire buns worth of space between each choux bun you've piped. They look like they were rising beautifully as well 😍
I'm glad you enjoyed the recipe ❤️ White chocolate and black sesame is my new favourite flavour combo!
Thanks for sharing your bake! Let us know if you make any other recipes from the @mxtxfoodzine - we love seeing readers trying them out 🥰
I am constantly thinking about this
This mild Wikipedia sentence is like the understatement of all time
Here are some crazy grasshopper mouse facts for those who are not familiar with the most badass mouse species on the planet
- They are primarily carnivorous, and their diet is made up of not only bugs but also snakes, lizards and other mice.
- They hunt like true predators, slowly stalking and creeping up on their prey before ambushing them. They will sometimes let out a screech as they attack.
- Like wolves, they howl to establish territory and have a specially developed throat to produce louder vocalizations. They will stand up on their hind legs and throw their head back to howl- a sound that can be heard from 100 meters away!
- Grasshopper mouse behavior is linked to lunar cycles and they are more active during a full moon.
- These mice have been hunting bark scorpions and evolving alongside them for so long that they’ve evolved a mutation where scorpion venom that is lethal to other animals is converted into a painkiller in the grasshopper mouse’s body.
I think it's actually a very important distinction that Mianmian isn’t called a "servant’s (家仆) daughter" by Jiang Cheng but a domestic slave’s (家奴) daughter, actually. I think words mean things, actually, and that Chinese isn't just a bunch of made-up ink splotches and sounds that we can "Interpret" any way we want to.
1) Yes Mianmian truly is a slave's daughter, Jiang Cheng isn't just insulting her.
2) There are actually other characters described as "domestic slaves" or the daughters of one in the story, too: Mo Xuanyu's mother (daughter) and Wang Lingjiao. Wang Lingjiao also calls Madam Yu's two servants "slaves" when admonishing them, to which Madam Yu corrects that they are servants and Wei Wuxian muses snarkily that a domestic slave is using the term to insult others like she isn't one, herself.
3) There seems to be a mistranslation from both exr and 7seas about how Wang Lingjiao became Wen Chao's mistress. Exr says that Wen Chao's wife sanctioned Wang Lingjiao becoming a mistress after seeing how beautiful she was, while 7seas corrects this to Wang Lingjiao exchanging (flirtatious) glances with Wen Chao before falling into bed with him, but then 7seas decides to add this line of "with the inadvertent aid from her mistress," which exists nowhere in the raws. I also can't find where the sentence, "Hardly a noteworthy name, and yet, thanks to its masters, one that could not be ignored" appears in any of version of my raws.
For another Chinese fan has started combing through the 7seas translation on weibo and cross-posted to twitter for English-speaking fans to see:
But for those with neither weibo nor twitter, here are the screenshots:
(34-39 are all related to drunken shenanigans #3, which we’ve already established 7seas tool from the unedited version of mdzs.)

Very intriguing. Can it really be this simple?
The jc stans have now finally realized that the Chinese fans can—surprise, surprise!—fully see what they’re doing, but they’re blaming it on “an American can tattled on us to bring hate to the artist!” (the post in question mentions the artist at no point and actually addresses the English version’s many mistranslations that have been allowed to persist iteration after iteration). They a full 12 hours behind, cause the Chinese side is already discussing the fact that 7seas gave the go-ahead to a translation that omitted one of Wangxian’s kisses and why the artist is saying that mxtx personally approved their art for the covers, including A-Cheng-meimei and the backwards guqin (they’re “irked” by the backwards guqin “as a musician”—even though it would have taken a while for them to have drawn it in the first place without noticing it was backwards—but what can they do? Blame mxtx for liking it so much, amiright?”)
If anything, now you done made it worse by saying that jjwxc looked at art, saw the culturally incorrect aspect of it, and approved it for mass sale overseas! You literally invoked their names to cover your ass! Have you lost it???
@sciab
I think this is the scene they may be talking about (as a note, I've never seen anyone mention this before on the English side, so idk if this is a point they took from an English post—if it is, the post wasn't included by the weibo poster—or if this scene is just understood by the Chinese side to be a kiss, but here, these are the raws:
魏无羡发不出声音了。黑暗之中,蓝忘机已猛地将他抱紧,堵住了他的嘴。
And this is how it was translated by exr and 7seas:
Wei WuXian couldn’t let out another sound. Amidst the darkness, Lan WangJi had already embraced him tightly, stopping him with his lips.
—Chapt. 100: Hatred, exr
Wei Wuxian couldn’t speak another word. In the blackness, Lan Wangji had seized him and pulled him into a tight embrace that sealed his mouth against his chest.
—Vol. 5, Chapt. 21: Hensheng: To Hate Life
I can't believe I just read Jiang Cheng and hypercompetency at leadership in the same sentence, with my own very eyes.
I feel like people still often think that Lan Wangji goes around helping people either because he was trying to find Wei Wuxian or "in honor" of him. But in canon, it was always his own thing. Even Wei Wuxian never adhered to it until he married Lan Wangji which he narrates in this excerpt from the Gate Crasher Extra:
One could say they had somewhat pulled away from the cultivation world. If they had nothing of importance to attend to, they would roam aimlessly for a few days, half a month, a whole month. Wei Wuxian had long known Lan Wangji’s reputation for 'appearing where there is chaos' and hadn’t thought it would be a tough job. But now that he was tagging along, he realized it was a test of patience—not because it was tough, but rather, it was too easy. When he had gone on Night Hunts in the past, he’d favored strange and dangerous locations where he could experience a variety of adventures that were naturally full of turns and twists. However, Lan Wangji was not picky—he did what he ought to do, and it inevitably ended with some commonplace Night Hunt target that was unremarkable by Wei Wuxian’s standards. Case in point, this fierce corpse that had come knocking. Compared to the creatures Wei Wuxian used to hunt, it was boring indeed. Even other cultivators might consider dealing with it to be a waste of time and talent. But even if the case itself wasn’t enticing, Wei Wuxian was with Lan Wangji. It was relaxing and idyllic to enjoy each other’s company.
This characteristic of his is also shown in the Lotus Seedpod Extra where he helps out an old woman to knock down a withered branch stuck on the eaves of her roof, helps farmers hold up a roof as temporary shelter from the rain, and takes note to report a harmless spirit for it to be exorcised later.
I think Lan Wangji's inherent kindness and heroism is still often overlooked in favor of the interpretation that he "learned how to be truly kind/genuinely righteous" from Wei Wuxian. But what people often fail to realize is that as Wei Wuxian was helping and protecting the Wens, Lan Wangji was fulfilling his own duty of helping and protecting his own people and the common people while also trying to speak up for Wei Wuxian and later on the Wen siblings.
I feel like people want Lan Wangji to have a character development where he does a complete 180, but what really happens is just that he becomes more comfortable in his own skin. He understands himself, his feelings, and his desires more. His morals, values, and principles are strengthened but they are the same as ever.
He had always had a mind of his own and had always been stubborn. This is the same person whom, as a child, against everyone's reprimands and scolding, kept visiting his mother's house and sitting outside of it for months. The same one who persuaded his sect leader brother and strict uncle to allow him to keep his rabbits despite pets not being allowed in the premises. The boy who walked a long way away from home and insisted on being allowed to pick lotus seedpods despite it being past the curfew for doing so. He protects an innocent girl and rebukes his own sect's disciple for trying to put her in harm's way even as his leg was broken, his home burned down, his father gone, and his brother missing. He bestows punishment upon himself alongside Wei Wuxian when the latter challenges if Lan Wangji would apply the same rules he enforces onto himself. Later on, after the massacre at Nightless City (in which he also tried to help as many people as he could), he implored to be punished for his actions as he knew, in the same way, Wei Wuxian was about to receive the consequences for his own. And Lan Wangji's goodness, his righteousness, and his justness are the things Wei Wuxian admires and respects the most about him. It's what makes Wei Wuxian fall deeper in love with him over and over.
Lan Wangji in the present timeline is more decisive and a little less strict, a little more playful, but his pure goodness is all the same.
This meta on Lan Wangji & Lan An somewhat touches on what his character needed to go through. It's less of a moral change and more of him having to choose between staying on this path of asceticism that is believed to lead to spiritual immortality or to join the secular world and involve himself in worldly affairs, a choice between being godly or being human.
Side note: I like how in the donghua, many minor cultivation sects joined the Sunshot Campaign because in gratitude and loyalty towards Lan Wangji who had helped them immensely in the past. In one or a few audio drama extras also, common people would thank Lan Wangji here and there for having helped them in the past. It's a nice illustration of how good and helpful Lan Wangji is, how he readily helps anyone no matter their status and no matter how big or small the problem.
