We got asked if this is cute and okay. I can very happily say yes, this is stupid cute and those are happy porcupine noises. 

One of my favorite things about doing zoo work was all the noises you never realize the animals make when they’re excited or interested in a new thing. Coatimundis squeak and snuffle, and giant porcupines make that sound.

You know, I’ve never personally been lifted from the ground by my neck to be strangled, but uh, is there a reason y’all never like….. kick the person holding you? Like characters straight up just dangle there and gasp, like you have legs! Use them you stupid bitches!

Actually, the physics involved with that is kinda weird. The thought, oh shit, can’t breathe, usually overpowers the rational part of the mind that can calmly assess the threat and comes up with effective solutions.

But that’s only the first obstacle. The second is leverage. I don’t know about you, but I hate stomach crunches. Thing is, why you’re being gripped by the neck, the only way you can get your feet up on your attacker is to move using muscles in your neck and spine. There’s not really any other source of leverage you can draw from like this.

It’s not an easy feat. It takes conscious thought, thoughts that keep getting drowned out by the oh shit, can’t breathe, instinct.

And then

in order to kick effectively, you’ll need some kind of leverage. Putting your back against a wall would be the most effective tactic, but a person being held like that literally has no choice in this regard.

The next best tactic would be to lift your legs as high as your opponent’s shoulder and use the combined leverage to try and break their grip on your throat. Except:

If they’re lifting you up off the ground by the neck, they’ll probably not have their grip broken by human force.

Your neck bones are fairly fragile, you could end up paralyzing yourself making the attempt.

“Just kick them” doesn’t work in this situation because you’re off the ground. An ordinary kick relies on manipulating leverage and muscle from one leg on the ground and another exerting force on the target.

Trying to fight back without a good source of leverage is like trying to beat them to death with a pool noodle.

And that’s assuming you can think of any of this at all.

A couple of states have different dates for Open Enrollment!! Make sure you look yours up so you don't miss the window! For most places, it begins on November 1.

December 15 is the deadline for coverage starting January 1, but Open Enrollment officially ends on January 15. If you enroll between December 16 and January 15, coverage starts February 1.

Fever And Whump: my experience with fevers!

(Disclaimer: this is not medical advice. This might not even resemble your experience and that's fine)

As someone who has been dealing with fevers my whole life because my body is weak, here's what it looks like for me:

The first and most telling symptoms for me is full body pains. It doesn't hurt too much, and it feels like muscle cramps after a day at the gym, but it's in your whole body. Those do not go away by stretching or resting the muscles.

The fever itself starts with shivering. You feel cold even though the room might not be cold at all.

If you cover yourself, it will feel nice and warm, and very very cosy. This however, raises the fever. Do not be fooled.

Low fevers will get you FIDGETY. You can't stay in place, you speak really fast and you feel hyperactive.

Sometimes you fidget to the point of hurting yourself (my ankles are being repeatedly twisted rn)

High fevers will have you lying down. They throw your balance off. They make me dizzy in a way that doesn't bring nausea. It almost feels like your body forgot how to balance itself.

I have never experienced hallucinations, but the brain fog is real and you do NOT feel it. You just start thinking less.

Thirst and hunger? Never heard of them. You have to force yourself to eat.

High fevers are more dangerous because I feel them less. Yes, I start walking like a drunk, but my brain thinks everything is fine.

Most of the time I get fevers from catching a virus, but I also get exhaustion fevers.

Fevers dreams are real. They never make much sense and they'll have you waking up still feeling exhausted.

Hey, y'all, in light of the AWS outage today I wanna scream from the rooftops again:

Purchase directly from websites.

Shop locally.

Barter and trade where applicable.

Donate and go to places where stuff is located.

Obviously, not everyone can completely drop Amazon for various reasons, but it is easier than you think. Start small.

Earth Hero - Good for home goods, tech accessories, baby care, beauty, office supplies, and more.

Public Goods - Home decor, skin and body care, cleaning, dining, etc.

Grove Collaborative - Home and cleaning goods, but they have items for body + skin + hair care and miscellaneous items as well.

Simple Switch - Offers clothing, home goods, cleaning supplies, and even pet + plant stuff.

Blk + Grn - Black artisan-focused site that offers skin, hair, and body care, as well as some home goods.

Kitchen + Pantry

Misfit Market - Offers cheaper options for food items cuz they're a lil ugly but still fresh. Better than pretty and gross. Just be mindful of auto shipments (I can be forgetful)

Imperfect Foods - Basically the same thing as Misfit Market, but may offer other options depending on your location, so check both out.

Thrive Market - Shop smarter and sustainably. Purchasing groceries online can also help you avoid impulse purchases (of which I am personally guilty). It does require a membership which is frustrating but overall an ok deal if you're using it.

Hive - Snacks and pantry goods, with a few home goods sprinkled in.

Good.Store - The Green brothers have a store where 100% of proceeds go to charity. Currently, the offers are coffee, tea, soaps, socks, and cleaning supplies. You can suggest things to them, though (I suggested candles).

Entertainment

Bookshop.org - Books! Buy them online new or used or EBOOKS!

Your local library - see what services they have. Mine has three different ebook apps that you can use FOR FREE. Movie and shows are also offered through an app or through physical media.

Libby - Find ebooks and audiobooks for free (often found through a library)

Tech

Backmarket - New tech is expensive anyway, want a barely used or refurbished device? Check out backmarket. They have an app, too. They even have appliances!!

Ebay - Also an ok place for tech, but be wary of who you're buying from. Good for lots of second hand stuff. Just use your critical thinking skills.

Clothing

Ok, there are a LOT of sustainable clothing sites that cost a lot of money, so keep this in mind, but some cheaper options are:

ThredUp - Secondhand clothing.

Poshmark - Secondhand shopping

Urbankised - Slow fashion, handmade items, and unique styles. Can be a bit pricey but you're purchasing quality, and most items seem to be similar to what you'd pay at any basic clothing store.

Ethical Trading Co. - Quality clothing and accessories at ok prices, could be easier on the wallet but you're purchasing things that are built to last. They also sell food and home goods.

Allbirds - Shoes, so it isn't cheap, but they are high quality and sustainable. They even have a second hand store (ReRun)where you can get shoes at a resale cost!

Misc

Uncommon Goods - A little pricier, but you're paying real people for items made by hand. Great for unique gifts.

Ten Thousand Villages - supports artists and craftspeople from small communities in need by selling their hand-made items. Prices ranges from affordable to a little pricey, but again, you're paying real people.

Chewy - Great for pet supplies! Notoriously fantastic customer service.

UpRoot Design Studio - Perfect for gifts and greeting cards.

• The slow realization that they keep brushing it off until they can’t stand anymore.

• Glassy eyes, flushed cheeks, and a voice that’ll barely go over a whisper.

• Strange fever dreams that blur time, leaving the whumpee waking up thinking only minutes have passed when it’s been hours.

• The whumpee trying to stand up right, but keeps swaying back and forth, unable to keep good balance from their body being so weak.

• Random, delirious mumbling that is hardly coherent at all.

• The soft whisper of the whumper saying “You’re burning up…”

• The caretaker staying up all night long, warily counting each and every uneven breath that the whumpee draws in.

• A bucket that never leaves the side of the bed in case the whumpee needs to throw up.

• The caretaker pressing a cold cloth against the whumpee’s head in an attempt to calm the fever.

• “You’re too hot,” the caretaker mutters, voice laced with worry and tenderness.

• A damp washcloth slipping from their forehead when they drift back to sleep.

• That fragile, exhausted smile when they finally wake and whisper, “Hey…”

• Fever finally breaking in the early morning light. Soaked sheets, trembling relief, and soft reassurances from their caretaker.
