Mango had a check up at the vet today and she's got cataracts. She's still got some sight, but it's going to deteriorate. Other than:

Not moving stuff

Being noisy

Has anyone got advice for keeping her happy and functioning? At the moment she gets a bit worried out in the dark, but you wouldn't know otherwise.

Happily nothing else to note. Stiff legs but that's not new, her weight is good and consistent, ears clean, teeth good, heart and lungs happy. Many treats were consumed, though muzzle was also used because she only has so much tolerance for poking, especially on her legs.

If your electric bill can afford it leave the lights on for her - seems to make a significant difference to my cat, I've got lots of lights on sensors and had to play a bit to get them to recognise 4kg of cat as a reason to turn on but it helps him :) also he had beds and boxes/toys / water in lots of places so he can always find it (he's both going blind and senile I'm not sure which is why but he kept screaming in the night.)

Okay but can we have less open plan and some lower ceilings cos animals especially cats and birds tend to win at tig. Also whilst really nice it looks really hard to clean the outdoor area between patients.

One of the hardest things about working in a veterinary ER is delivering bad news. I feel like at least once a shift someone is blindsided by their pet being diagnosed with a condition they’ve never heard of before. In many cases this is unavoidable but I really feel that some of the most common critical emergencies I see would be easier for owners to process if they had prior knowledge about the illness.

The following infographic is far from a comprehensive list and truthfully I have a LOT more to say about diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of each of these conditions. However, this image shows just a few of the major points that I wish owners had been able to prepare for prior to hearing about them in the ER. Some of these conditions are preventable and some are not but they all require an owner to make difficult decisions in a crisis situation. If your pet fits into one of these categories, please just do a quick google about the condition, and maybe discuss with your vet signs that you can watch for at home.

on the subject of scientists treating themselves like lab rats, my favorite is the vet who decided to give himself earmites three times to see if it was possible for humans to get it and what it was like

(the result: it's technically possible but this guy got it because he literally stuck them in his ear on purpose, and it resolved on its own each time, with the time it took to resolve decreasing every time. if your cat gets earmites as long as you're not sharing a qtip with them you probably don't need to worry about getting it yourself)

been thinking that maybe i should have added at least physio or maybe even possibly EMS to my applications instead of only psychology and dietetics.

but if i’m being honest, if med school did not work for me then how could i ever be a paramedic? and being a physiotherapist… i don’t know. i only thought about it because of m current personal trainer course.

but i think psychology offers a much more diverse degree, i think i would have more possibilities in the future and if i think about having a family and kids i feel like that’s my best option.

and of course i’m interested in psychology and the human mind and behaviour. for the first 3 years of med school i wanted to become a psychiatrist. so maybe this is a good path.

Hey, I know it feels like the world is falling down around you and nothing will be okay again. And as much as I can tell you it will get better that won't help right now. But. If you can't live for yourself live for the people who love you and would be upset if you weren't here tomorrow, don't make your parents bury their child.

Not everyhas their life sorted by 25, or 30, or 35 and that's okay. Love life at your pace, find your niche.

Our vet's office is still not letting people into the office with their pets (good for them!) except in special circumstances. Please reassure me that I'm not being an asshole for sending in a letter with my dog saying "here are the things we want checked, here is what we've been concerned about, and here are the patterns we've noticed."

It's a single sheet of notebook paper, hand-written, double-sided, and half the front page is drawings of what areas we'd like checked.

Is this too much? I feel like it's fewer words than I would actually *say* if I was at the vet but. You know. (I got paranoid and counted; it's about 300 words)

Basic outline is "here are the areas to check, here are the areas that have been checked (though possibly re-check one area due to changes), she is generally energetic and playful but we have noticed joint issues, here are the ways the joint issues present, here is her history with joint issues, here is the joint food she used to eat, do you have recommendations and also is her bed possibly hurting her, do we need to set up a regular nail trim, do we need imaging thank you"

The "areas to check" thing is specifically for needle aspirations of the many mystery lumps that tiny bastard produces. Gotta make sure it's not cancer. She is a lumpy little dog these days. So she's got these three big lumps on her neck that are stable and no cause for concern, but the new lumps on her feet and the lump on her abdomen that has grown (slowly) are what need to be checked, so the drawings are like labeled like "right rear paw halfway between paw pad and ankle on top outside surface of foot" and the other drawing has all the areas that have already been checked highlighted in green so the vets don't have to worry that they're new lumps when checking her out.

(the drawings are also why this is handwritten instead of typed, I just wrote on the page I drew on. My handwriting is fairly legible block capitals)

gentle reminder: please make sure you’re regularly cleaning your water bottles, thermos, and kettles with antibacterial soap and warm water so you don’t get ill. this includes the inside of the container itself, the straw, lid, the outside and bottom of the container, as well as any crevices. rinse well. stay safe and hydrated, babes. 🪴💧

I highly recommend buying dishwasher safe animal bowls/water bottles/etc for this reason!

Keep in mind as well that wooden perches/toys cannot be truly disinfected as they are porous; if they are used with a sick (contagious) animal, it’s best to throw them away.

My cat dishes are literally just glass IKEA bowls, they were cheap and they like them - they're shallow and wide.

My gerbils all had porcelain bowls that went through the dishwasher. Never did find a solution to water bottles - glass ones were very expensive!

We are switching our dog from regular Simparica to Simparica Trio. If he's already been on one Simparica, he should be ok without the risk of seizures, right? He's never had a bad reaction, but I'm paranoid.

Active Ingredient of Simparica is sarolaner. and TRIO is Sarolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel.

Sarolaner's toxic dose is 3 times over that of the therapeutic dose. As long as you don't pick the wrong size of the medicine, side effects chances are very low. [cite]

There is a study that states there is more reports of Adverse effects on dogs that are on medications in the isoxazoline group (Sarolaner is in the group) than previously claimed by the manufacturer[cite]. But there is also a report of conflict of interest, where the author of said study is trying to sue the manufacturer [cite]. So take this info as you will.

Pyrantel is antihelminthic drug. It's very poorly absorbed in the gut as its area of desired effect is within the gut. There is very little concern over overdosing as they've tested at 40x therapeutic dose and found no toxicity effects. There's basically no risk if ingested at the correct dose. [cite1, 2]

Moxidectin is a neurological medication aiming to attack the parasites, while sparing the host because of mammalian physiology prevents it from being absorbed to the brain. (Except MDR-1 gene defective dogs, like Collie). This medication is in the same family as ivermectin, but even the dogs with MRD-1 defect, they still tolerate Moxidectin much better then IVM. At 30x of therapeutic dose, there was still no side effects seen in MRD-1 defective dogs. [cite]

For female dogs, there are no studies on pregnancy and nursing safety. There is no evidence of danger (also no evidence of safety). I tell my client to skip it too just in case.

If you are using the CORRECT dose, there shouldn't be any ADDITIONAL concern over neurological side effects.

If your dog gets sick for whatever reason at all, delay the dose until healthy.

I have not personally see any dog gets into neuro trouble over long term of sarolaner. If your dog tolerates the regular formula well, and your dog is not a MDR-1 gene defective dog , I see no reason that your dog would react badly to TRIO version.

I feel like the reason certain dog-lovers insist cats are evil is because they read their body language as if they were dogs. So here’s a very basic guide to common “mean” things cats do that actually aren’t mean at all if you know what they’re thinking.

Rolling and exposing belly- attacks you when touched Does not mean: Give belly rubs! - haha I tricked you!  Actually means: I’m playful! If you reach for my belly I’ll grab your arm and bite it because I think we’re playfighting! 

Lazily exposing belly - still attacks when touched Does not mean: tricked you again! Actually means: I’m showing you my belly because I trust you. Please don’t break that trust by invading my personal space. I might accept a belly rub if I’m not ticklish and I know you well. Snapping at you while being pet Does not mean: I suddenly decided I dislike you! Actually means: You’re petting me in a way that gives me too much restless energy. Please focus on petting my head and shoulders instead of stroking the full length of my back next time.

Is in the same room but makes no attempt to interact Does not mean:  I’m ignoring you Actually means: We’re hanging out! I’m being respectful by giving you space while still enjoying your company. Slapping/scratching your hand when you try to pet them Does not mean: I hate you! Actually means: You’ve failed to establish that we’re not playing, or the way you’re approaching me scares me. Be calmer, speak more gently, make eye-contact and blink slowly at me before you try again.

Get ready for “more reasons why I fucking love cats”

Yes, the legends are true. Cats headbutt you to show their trust and affection. They also do it to show “hey look I see you as family.” Lions do it with members of their pride to say the same. It’s not just because they want food.

Cats nibbling is indeed literally cats grooming you. It’s what mom cats do to their kittens. If a cat is gently biting and/or licking you, they’re now your mom.

Meowing can simply be for the mere fact they want to say hello, want to play or be pet. Again, not just for food.

They barely meow at other cats (except for kittens, they meow at mom cat), mostly just humans. There are exceptions but overall, meowing is almost always for us.

Cats squinting/slow blinking is indeed basically the equivalent of us smiling and/or kissing.

Cats, like humans, prefer to get things without having to work for it- which isn’t very common within other animals.

Cat massages or making biscuits is because they happy! Kneading is another way of saying “hey I like this moment here I enjoy you and my life.”

Cats recognize us by smell, sound, taste, and touch. They recognize us after years as their long term memory is extremely good. This is why abused or neglected cats are so easily scared or hard to connect with. If your scent changes over the years or just in the day, your voice will them it’s really you. Also, they will only remember you if you had impact on their life. If you just existed in the same house, they obviously won’t care.

And yes, they know our patterns in the day. You notice it when it’s beneficial to them (feeding time!). They will often wait for you to come home as well.

To remember: cats think we are interesting as hell. They watch us do everything because we’re fascinating!!!

They also want you to be around when eating because they feel vulnerable. They focus on eating so they hope you protect them. They do the same for you, all the time.

when a cat turns their back on you, they’re not snubbing you. they’re trusting you to watch their back.

notice how when you’re unfamiliar but nonthreatening, they might loaf facing you and sorta halfway watch you. you’re not fully trusted, but you’re ok by them.

when you’re familiar and liked, they’ll often sit near you facing the same way. imitation of poses is a weird little way cats show solidarity. they do it to each other too. check out these bff’s:

they are doing this on purpose. it’s a buddy thing. so if you’re watching tv and a cat sits next to you and pretends to watch tv too, they are basically calling you bro and declaring friendship.

and if they really love and trust you, they’ll turn their back on you and go to sleep. they’ll sleep facing a wall in your presence, or lounge where they can’t see the room. this isn’t a snub, folks, this is true kitty love. they’re saying, “i feel safe when you’re around. i know nothing’s going to sneak up on me, because you’re here. i feel so safe i can stick my head under a pillow and snore with my butt pointed at you.”

Fun fact: because I treat ALL animals like tiny intelligent toddlers with logic and *A* common sense that just doesn’t glock yours because SPECIES barrier and a distinct lack of thumbs…

I consider any pets in a house just as much a resident to be respected as the humans because I am the guest and bitch THEY LIVE THERE.

So, because I taught pre k. And consider most pet animals to just be Adult Human Logic Impaired Thumbless Toddler Equivalents… I TALK to them like my students…

And I know a lot of “cat people” who DON’T speak cat, but they appreciate their animal. So I just give them the fun fact of what something means when they comment on a behavior they think is cute or weird they encourage simply because it is cute and they were told it was not harmful.

And my FAVORITE is when big quiet men who spoil their cats learn that their fluffy baby walking in to sit next to them playing a game, and keeping eyes on the door their human is not paying attention to is their cat’s way of saying “I got eyes on the door bro. You good to keep playing.”

There is nothing better than hearing “OH you watching the door for me, buddy? Hell yeah, thanks. After this round, we breaking out the nip!” And a responding meow after watching a man cry real tears at some point cuz I informed him that sleeping in the corner meant his cat was deeply trusted him and waking up to the cat sitting in his pillow watching the door was the guard duty while he slept. The cutest shit is telling cat people “yes, they love you JUST as much as you think they do… and maybe a lil more than you could ever imagine.”

Tips for reading scientific papers

1. Print them out. This helps because you don’t have your computer as a distraction, it hurts your eyes less and you can physically write notes on it

2. Highlight different types of info in different colors. I separate text into Vocab/background; tests; results; conclusions; unknown/future; and other. This helps you when you reread and also helps you as you read theough the first time so you can associate chunks of the paper with the parts that go together.
