My thoughts on backrooms (2026) as like a black watcher or whatever

Ok so starting with the things I liked, the cinematography was really good it did a good job building tension and ambience I found Clark to be a really compelling character and enjoyed the first part of the movie

Now the stuff I disliked . Let's start that alot of Marys character felt too disconnected to the rest to the point of her also being an mc kinda just dragged it down. I think what it tried to do with the theme and her character wasn't well executed bc wasn't actively involved with the backrooms for most of the movie and when she did it was also messy. Her and Clark had a purely professional relationship sothe moments where she went to his store or yelled at him like she resented him personally just felt off. Bc it's only therapist- patient it just make it feel like her scene in the movie either shouldnt be there or there's a lot of stuff that was missing to make an actual connection between her and Clark or the backrooms . Her role was given to like Clarks employee or someone that had to interact with him more often like a friend, family member or s/o or even make it clear she was being umprofessinal an projecting her shit in Clark maybe the conflicts and parallels would be better than just being like therapist-pacient

But in the end the worst is bc her most important scenes were like like the most antibkack racially insensitive bits on the movie. The movie was actually pretty racist .

There was no black person in the writing room and by the end u have : the black male character becoming agressive and attacking the white woman out of nowhere , said black man engaging in pseudo cannibalism for some fucking reason while also just acting "crazyyyy" and aggressive to said white woman. He gets killed by a monster version of himself that is a costume played my a fucking white man . Monster with the aparece of the black man has a whole sequence where he's chasing the white woman down. U have a scene that is supposed to represent Mary freeing herself and letting go and it's like a white woman beating the monster version of the black man with a rock where is close up on his face

Like Thai sucked really bad on different levels colorblind casting doesn't work well and u have to that into consideration that having a black or non white characters can affect the context A LOT, and you have to get a sensitive reader in the writing room and not just 2 white guys.

Overall I did enjoy a good half of the movie the rest was like meh or absurdly racist. Kinda disappointed for something I was honestly looking forward to

imagine if you hired a painter to paint your house and you tell them you want it blue and then you come back to see theyre in the middle of painting your house pink so you go hey stop. thats not what i asked for. and theyre like i just dont want to ruin your lovely house this color suits it so much better trust me. and you go No, i asked for blue give me blue??? and the painter is like alright alright. and then they paint your house purple and when you go this still isnt blue they say i simply cant paint your house blue. this is the compromise. and then you still have to pay them for their work even though you are now going to have to either hire another painter or just figure out how to paint ur own house to get it how you actually wanted. thatd be crazy right. so anyway i prefer to cut my own hair at home

Thanks! I more intended for him to be an amateur ham radio guy (which is basically lots of chatting with other amateur radio operators), but that's a fun interpretation too. It is making me imagine every song being preceded by an incredibly long string of morse code to indicate who requested which songs, which is very funny.
