Ok so roads are important infrastructure. A lot of stuff that's important happens on roads. Now, let's imagine that quadrillionaire Matt Stench has decided that the next big tech innovation is the Wide Car. It's a car that takes up six lanes despite seating only one passenger.

The Wide Car is supposed to be the future, and everyone's going to be driving Wide Cars, even though nobody who makes Wide Cars is turning a profit. Employers are offering Wide Cars as an employee benefit, and getting "nah." Some employers are going as far as demanding their employees drive Wide Cars, and the result is that people take time out of their workdays to get in the mandatory gas usage for their Wide Car before driving home in a regular car.

In spite of the fact that the Wide Car is clearly set to fail, there's an enormous push to expand to twelve-lane roads to accommodate a bunch of Wide Cars that simply will not materialize. This is not an organic response to demand, but a speculative investment that amplifies the existing issues with road development for no good reason.

That is the problem.

I had a conversation yesterday about people who still read Harry Potter about whether it is ok to still own and enjoy the books if you don't activately spend money on it anymore, because "separation of art and artist" blah blah blah. These people don't know who JK Rowling actually is. They think she is "just" a regular transphobe (which, to me, would already be reason enough to not support her??). When I explained to them that she invested millions of pounds into transphobic policies, publicly exposes trans people on Twitter and took legal steps against literal AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL, I explained to them that she isn't "just a regular transphobe". She is actively funding trans people taking their own lives. To me, she is a murderer. And I do not know how you can possibly read a hateful murderer's book without feeling absolutely disgusted. Grow up. Find a different book. Trans people's lives are infinitely more important than A BOOK! What is wrong with people, genuinely?

Lots of people who push back on this view do so because they view (or, pretend to view) shaving as an active choice women make outside of the patriarchal system we're in. If it was a choice though, the majority of women wouldn't shave. If it was a choice, we precisely wouldn't be shamed for not shaving. If it was a choice, there wouldn't be any pushback on people trying to normalize body hair on women. It is so inherently contradictory and it's genuinely so baffling to me that some people cannot see their own hypocrisy.

And I just think that “Why is the world so beautiful?” is a question that we all ought to be embracing.”
