If a puppy is separated from its mother too soon, what will be the psychological (and/or behavioral) consequences for that puppy?

I bought a dog from a man six years ago (I will never do that again) and I adopted him when he was only about 25 days old. I suspect that the dog might have been stolen from their real owners and that’s why they brought him to me in such a hurry.

I didn’t know that he was that young (or that he could have possibly been stolen) otherwise I wouldn’t have adopted him.

He was just a regular puppy at first, he required lots of love and attention. I had to wake up multiple times at night just to feed him and I took care of him like a baby.

We had an older dog when he was growing up but they didn’t play together since the older dog didn’t pay attention to him. I tried to make him socialize with other puppies but he was terrified of them, and he still is to this day.

I noticed that he’s having issues with his identity since he grew up surrounded by lots of cats. He doesn’t know how to socialize with other dogs and he tries to ''breed'' with my cats (even if they’re male)

He’s very sweet, healthy, playful, energetic and happy overall but I feel bad for him because he’s really confused about his identity.

This was Boyd ten minutes after he arrived at home…
