Hello! I'm Kelso, this is my comic blog (I follow from @strangesickness). I love comic books and spreadsheets and often make spreadsheets about comic books! I love TimIvesAri and my favorite DC character is Duke Thomas!

My favorite comics are Robin '93, Secret Six (all of them), We Are Robin, and Birds of Prey '99. Other than Duke, I love Barbara Gordon, Scandal Savage, Jay Nakamura, Jon Kent, Selina Kyle, and Stephanie Brown.

I'm kind of an annoying post-crisis purist and I spend most of my days thinking about how Duke could have fit into that era. Despite this, current releases still make up a large percent of my weekly comic reading. I post about new releases as they come out, to avoid spoilers please block #wednesday spoilers.

I ship everything. Particularly TimIves, BatJokes, DinahBabs, DickTim, DinahShiva, and JayJon though.

Chuck Dixon on the Drakes being neglectful

In response to the last round of the Drakes being neglectful/abusive discourse I sent in a question to Chuck Dixon's YouTube Q&A if he considered the Drakes neglectful parents and this is what he said:

"Um yeah, the Drakes they weren't neglectful, they were somewhat distracted, you know, especially since his mom died and he was left under the care of his father who was somewhat invalided after the events he had been through thanks to Alan Grant. And I always saw them as they were like, you know, free-range parents. That's how I was raised. You know, I left the house in the morning if I wasn't going to school and I wasn't really expected back until dinner time or you know, unless lunch had been planned. And my mother didn't know where I was. Sometimes I was miles and miles away from the house all day. You know, sometimes with kids I'd only met 5 minutes earlier. So, you know, never knew. So, I figured you know the Drakes were like old-school parents, but his dad was a loving dad and interested in his son's studies and everything else and certainly present enough to cause complications for Tim having a secret identity.

And did this subject come up a lot? It came up every Bat Summit. Every Bat Summit, as I've said before in these little broadcasts Denny would go, "Well, what are we going to do about Jack Drake? When are we going to kill Jack Drake?" And I would always argue against it cause I was the main Robin writer. I don't want to kill Jack Drake. And he'd say, "Well, that would be dramatic." And I [said] “Well, yeah, we're not going to sell extra issues, you know, Robin's dad dies. It's not going to sell any [issues]. Nobody cares that much about Jack Drake as a character”. And I said, "And then if you remove Jack Drake, then you remove you know, Tim Drake's parents and now basically Bruce Wayne or Batman becomes his surrogate parent. And I said, "I don't want him to be Dick Grayson. I want him to be Peter Parker.” I want him to have those complications of having a double life. He's still in high school. He has, you know, friends and family and everything else that he has to hide his secret identity from and it generates stories. Why would we get rid of a character who generates stories? So certainly Jack; I think they killed Jack Drake the minute I left the title. I think that poor guy didn't last two pages if I remember correctly. So they couldn't wait to get rid of him. It's hard writing secret identity stuff. "Don't make us do it." Yeah, it's hard. It should be hard. [A] writer's job is to be clever and innovative and present the reader with surprises. It's the job. Do the job. So you can't make everything easy for your character. So who wants to write a who wants to read a book or write a book where everything's easy for the main character? Snoozefest. Anyway, the Drakes were fine as parents. Maybe a little distracted, maybe not there all the time, but you know, Tim Drake wasn't the easiest kid to raise. He's always disappearing. "

this has pretty much always been my reading of tim's relationship with his parents, and jack in particular, so i'm a little vindicated word of god is on my side given the general state of fanon on the topic nowadays, but i do also want to call attention to the bit at the end where dixon says, "tim drake wasn't the easiest kid to raise. he's always disappearing." because yeah. that's really all i can say. yeah. the first time i read tim's solo, i had a running tally for the amount of times tim literally ran away from home, more often than not leaving the entire country. multiple times over.

just off the top of my head, you have:

1.) during batman: legacy. tim joins bruce and dick on a mission to stop the clench (again). they all head to sudan, followed by dick and tim splitting off to france, before finally going back to gotham. this is the only one on this list that isn't treated as tim explicitly running away in the text as far as i can recall, but i'm counting it anyway for doubling up as part of my "times tim drake has been banished to france" counter. also, the country-hopping. in flight time alone, that's a missing person's case.

2.) shortly before batman: cataclysm. tim brings dick with him on a mission to fake iraq, then he has dick drop him off in france afterward for a crisis of faith disguised as a training trip, which he follows pattern in ditching for fake yugoslavia. pretty extreme reaction to being grounded, tim.

3.) shortly before batman: no man's land. tim running away… to gotham. he just hates keystone that much. jack is weirdly understanding, especially after the previous incident, which he probably regrets once:

4.) during batman: no man's land. the crowning gem to top it all off. jack's fourteen year old son sneaking into the lawless wasteland formerly known as gotham city. tim says he dropped off the face of the earth for two weeks before calling his dad, but the broader nml timeline puts it at a little closer to two months. his face was probably on milk cartons. the president wanted to meet him. please, stop reminding him, dick.

and still, whenever these instances come up, jack argues against the people telling him that tim is just being a rebellious teen and defends his son's character.

jack fights tooth and nail to get tim back. because he knows and loves his son, and all he wants is for tim to come home safe.

but none of these events occurred because jack was inattentive or neglectful toward tim. every step of the way, he's trying to connect with tim and understand his side of things, and it eats away at the both of them. tim drake just isn't the easiest kid to raise—he's always disappearing!

(and of course, this is not to mention the many instances dixon was actually referring of tim being generally unaccounted for during the day. or night, as it often was.)

Well actually my favs are too deep in their personal hangups about sex to do any form of penetration. So. Jot that down.

the thing is the ollie thinking dick is cutieful and sexy stuff in inheritance is like. yea. it probably should have been edited to some degree in the final draft just to move it away from perverted old man territory somewhat. but the editor did not ask her to edit it or cut it down, or in any way express disapproval of it, and then she was fired for it. a scene the editor had approved for publication. and i really think it's impossible to look at that, and look at how grayson defended other marginalized creatives at dc and fought for the female and black characters didio was killing off, and look at didio's hatred of women and queers, and not think: oh yeah they let her publish it unedited so that they had an excuse to fire her, huh

also hard not to look at it and think grayson wrote some excellent olliedick fanfiction and/or rp threads that we never got to see. absolutely devastating.
