An in-depth blog about ... Beyblade.
Hey! I’m Bey Brad, and I’ve been playing Beyblade on-and-off (mostly really really on) for roughly 13 years.
Here I am (on the right) at my first official tournament in 2002, where I came in second place:
And here I am at a tournament hosted by the World Beyblade Organization just over a month ago:
(The World Beyblade Organization is, incidentally, the online community I founded in 2008 to organize and sanction Beyblade competitive play worldwide. It is still active, and I’ll write more about it sometime soon!)
I stopped playing in 2010, and sold my entire, 1,000+ Beyblade collection.
But lately, the kid’s craze that consumed my life for a decade had resurfaced in my mind. And then, the news: new Beyblades! They’re made of plastic again! They connect to your smartphone!!
They explode?????
After some initial over-dramatic hand-wringing (I referred to the new “Burst” gimmick as “the death knell for Beyblade”), I decided: hell yeah. I’m in.
With the release of the new Beyblade Burst series, I’m jumping back in to the hobby that once consumed my life, and I’ll be documenting my experiences here — along with a look at Beyblade’s overall history, design, and gameplay mechanics.
My goal is to keep this readable and fun for anyone with an interest in toys, game design or metagaming, so feel free to follow even if you’ve never played before! You’ll be an expert by the time you do.
