When I worked at Target, it was during the winter, and this guy comes up to my register with a neutral-colored beanie with a fake fur pompom on top. All embarrassed and cringing, asking me if it was a woman’s hat and if it would be weird for him to get it.

I was like, “It’s just a hat. If you like it and you wear it, it’s not a woman’s hat, it’s just your hat. You don’t need to follow what the tag says if you don’t want to.” And it was like I gave him some kind of awe-inspiring wisdom he’d never considered, and he left with that hat on his head.

older sister’s horse fell on her twice in the same year. both times she was wearing a helmet, both times she got a severe concussion. the helmet broke on the second one. who knows what her injuries would’ve been either time if she hadn’t been using one at all. and neither time was a “skill issue”, the horse was wearing old boots with bad tread and ate shit on two totally different terrains. I’ve even been actually bucked off at full speed before and got a concussion but i was wearing a helmet, so that’s all the head damage i got.

those things are designed to protect your head by absorbing the impact. and high impact falls happen all day every day when dealing with naturally flighty 1k pound beasts. hell, they even make ones designed to look like cowboy hats now so you can’t use embarrassment as an excuse anymore. wear the fucking helmet.

idk man sometimes i like it when video game writers are allowed to plan a series of events that happen in a specific order and affect each other in turn to become an overarching narrative, and i don’t mind trusting those writers to take me through those events in the order that is emotionally effective. i don’t really care if a game forces me to go through the forest area first before i can attempt the icy area because maybe there’s things that happen in the forest area that inform later scenes in the icy area. maybe we don't need more superficial player choice open world concepts if it comes at the cost of the ability to write a story with actual significant plot events and character development in each section
