more of sadie crosby and macklin celebrini for you all. this was sooooo fun to write.
warning: none, just some shy flirting :)
The next time they see each other is at the 2024 NHL Draft in Vegas. Sadie, having grown up as the princess of the NHL, is such a personality within the community. She's the girl everyone wants to see, so she was invited to the draft as a result.
After she followed Macklin back, the two of them kept up with each other through social media. They didn't speak directly to each other often, sometimes a casual 'congrats' was given, but they liked each other's posts and commented if they felt compelled. It was the talk of the town for a long time, but it quickly became just another mute point.
Once talk of the draft started intensifying, Sadie heard Macklin's name everywhere. He was inescapable--even her dad was talking about him, which is the world's biggest compliment. Sidney Crosby can't pump anyone's tires for the life of him, but it's hard not to when you're talking about a guy who won the Hobey Baker at 17 years old. It was obvious to everyone that he was going 1st overall. Everyone was just waiting for the moment.
When Sadie was invited to the draft, she happily agreed, eager to experience the draft as a functioning human being. She'd been when she was a little girl, but not since then, so she was excited for what was to come. What made it all the more special was the fact that her little friend from Boston, Vancouver, rather, was the one to see.
She showed up in a simple black dress. It had a jewel neckline and came down to just a little under the middle of her thighs. She wore a simple pair of black kitten heels with silver hardware and some black mini-sunglasses. The front sections of her hair were pinned back behind her ears with silver clips and the rest was loosely curled down her back. She looked beautiful, like the princess she really was.
From the moment she arrived (without her father) people were staring at her. The women there looked on lovingly at the stunning girl who they'd watched grow up, wishing she was their daughter. Older men ogled her like the creeps they are, appreciating her slender legs and toned arms. Some of them meant no harm by it, reacting the same way as some of the women, but a lot of them were disgusting with their shamelessness. Every single one of the young, aspiring players that she saw tried their best not to stare but they all failed miserably. They didn't realize how hard it was to resist watching Sadie Crosby in her natural habitat. Their eyes followed her as she said hellos and paid respects to those she owed it to; some of them were brave enough to say hello themselves. In reality, they had nothing to be afraid of, she was as sweet as pie, but their heart-shattering crushes made them too anxious.
While all these other men and women were staring at Sadie, she was only looking for one person. Macklin Celebrini.
Macklin was staying in the Venetian with his family, which was where he was until he headed for the opening ceremony. The hotel was connected to the Sphere, via the indoor bridgeway, which connected to a lobby and then the main halls. He stood in front of the mirror near the door, fixing his tie and making sure he looked fine. His younger sister was sitting on a stool in the room on her phone when she gasped and shot up from her position.
"Oh my God!" Charlie exclaimed, jaw dropping and eyes widening. "Sadie Crosby is here." She informed with the most serious expression on her face, shoving her phone into her younger brother's face. Macklin's neck whipped in their direction, hands freezing on his tie.
His family knew about her guest appearance at his game only months prior, and they knew that the two of them followed each other on social media. But, it was a one-off scenario that nobody, including Macklin, thought would ever go further than that. He was just on the right team, in the right place, at the right time. Luck was all that gave him that experience.
"No way!" RJ shouted, jumping up from his position and stealing Charlie's phone out of her hand. There must be a picture or something, Macklin thought, trying to focus on readying himself for the ceremony, not his childhood crush.
"I'm gonna be in the same room as Sadie Crosby," Charlie said exasperatedly, overcome with excitement at the possibility of meeting her. RJ snorted and swiped at more pictures of her.
"You're telling me, dude," he laughed zooming in on a few pictures. Sadie had been RJ's celebrity crush for his entire life. Sadie was six years older than him and had been the love of his life since the first time he saw her. She's Canadian royalty, what Canadian boy wasn't in love with her when they were little?
"Dude, don't zoom in," Macklin stepped forward and snatched the phone from his hand. "That's disrespectful." He reprimanded before tilting the phone toward his own eyes.
Half of him didn't believe that she was really there. She hadn't been since she was, like, nine years old. It would've been an insane coincidence if she came for the first time in nine years the year that Macklin was draft-eligible. But when he saw the photos and videos of her in the building, he got a strange feeling. Serendipity.
"'That's disrespectful'," RJ mocked, taking the phone back and handing it to Charlie. "You're the one staring, weirdo." He teased, smirking to himself as he fished his own phone from his pocket.
"I'm not staring," Macklin refuted, turning back to the mirror and fixing his tie again. "I just didn't believe you guys." In that moment, his dad came out of the other suite and clapped his hands on Mack's shoulders.
"Ready, kid?" He smiled in the mirror, eyebrows raising and lips folding inward. Mack took a deep breath in and nodded.
"Yep," his own lips folded into his mouth and he looked down as he turned. Rick's hands came back down onto his shoulders, clapping them a few times.
"You look good, son," he complimented, removing his hands and fixing his tie again. There was nothing wrong with it, it was just a joint-compulsion they both had.
"Yeah, it looks good," he agreed as his family started gathering in the entry way to head to the Sphere. "I don't really know, but I don't really care either. I don't know." He rambled, looking anywhere but his family. He received a collective chuckle from everyone in the room and then they headed out to the hallway.
God please don't let him see Sadie Crosby before the ceremony. He thought as they journeyed through the bridge way to the Sphere. His hands clenched and unclenched as they hung at his sides, his long strides taking him farther than his family, who he kept slowing down to stay beside.
Someone opened the double doors from the hallway for him, which took him to a lobby/hall where people were mingling, rich laughs echoing in his ears. His eyes scanned the room while his family gasped and awwed around him. He spun around slowly, taking everything in, backing away from his family when he did so. However, his no-look-spin was a mistake in such a crowded room, when he back-pedaled right into another human being.
Macklin heard a faint gasp and a tiny 'oh my god' behind him and he turned so fast, he could've broken his neck. "I'm so sorry," he apologized quickly, hands flying out to catch whoever he just pushed. His hand wrapped around the girl's bicep gently, who was still looking down, trying not to drop her purse. "I'm such an idiot, I'm sorry." He doubled down on the apology, not realizing who she was.
"No, you're okay," the girl giggled, seemingly fine, as if nothing happened. Macklin could recognize that sweet voice anywhere. "I'm fine." She reassured him, finally looking up at him. His lips parted slightly in shock, and an inaudible gasp left him.
"Sadie," he said her name, brows raising in shock. Her name was the only thing he could think of. The rest of his mind was blank, which was exactly why he didn't want to see her before the ceremony.
"Macklin," she mimicked with a coolness about her, something effortless. They both just looked at each other for a moment, neither of them saying anything. When Macklin realized he was still holding tight onto her bicep, wrapping his hand entirely around it, he let go and stuck it out to shake hers instead. She huffed a tiny laugh and stuck her own hand out to delicately shake his strong one.
"It's, uh, it's good to see you," he smiled warmly at her as his family looked on from three feet away. Charlie was frozen, RJ was frozen, Aiden was fine, and his parents were smiling at the interaction.
"Likewise," she returned. Her eyes raked down his appearance and she stepped back to take his tall figure in fully. "Lookin' spiffy for your calm first overall selection day, eh?" She teased, returning to her original positioning in front of him. His cheeks flushed slightly and he nervously brushed his hair back.
"I mean, I don't know about that, but," he denied, not wanting to sound cocky or overconfident. He knew he was going first overall, but he didn't know. Sadie just gave him a 'duh' look an titled her head.
"Dude, come on," she squinted at him, dropping her head and looking at him through her brows. He just smiled shyly at her, cheeks staying flushed the longer she looked at him. As she looked at him, she realized how much older he looked. That time she had seen him was only just over six months ago, but he did some growing up in those short months. Something about him was more manly, like he was starting to leave his boyishness behind. She had to admit, he was a beautiful boy.
"I didn't know you were gonna be here," he admitted, scratching his jaw and pocketing the other. "My siblings told me earlier and I honestly didn't believe them." He gestured to his family, which Sadie peaked around him to see. Charlie smiled widely and waved, as did Aiden and their parents, but RJ was still frozen. Sadie returned their smiles and waved at them as well.
"Yeah, I didn't know I was either," she did the same hair flip over her shoulder that she did the first time they met. "Not until, like, a week ago, at least."
"Wow, they told you that late?" Macklin asked, shocked at their lack of planning. But was he really shocked? No, not really.
He took more time to take in her appearance as she answered. She never didn't look beautiful, but she was glowing that night. Black was definitely one of her colors. It complimented her own black hair so well and made her tan skin shimmer in contrast. Her big brown eyes and plump lips were like big glowing signs that were yelling at Macklin to keep staring them.
"Yeah, I was a little surprised too, but, I don't know," she laughed. "I haven't been since I was probably nine years old, so, I was shocked they even wanted me here. It must have been a last minute decision or something, otherwise they would have told me sooner. I wonder what made them choose to invite me." She rhetorically questioned, looking up and to her right as she thought.
Macklin licked his lips and furrowed his brows when her neck was exposed, the skin glittery and shiny and smooth. They immediately returned to her face when she looked back at him. He thought he got away with it, but the Crosbys never missed anything.
"Is it just you?" Macklin asked curiously, silently hoping Sid was around the corner or down the hall.
"Yep, just me," she nodded in confirmation. "Dad's not the biggest fan of this stuff anymore, and the league knows it. They just invite me to everything instead. He's back home right now."
Macklin smiled at how casually she spoke of Sidney Crosby, simply referencing him as 'Dad'.
"No, I get it," he nodded, blinking rapidly. "It's sick you're here now, though."
"I know," she beamed, tilting her head again. She was excited to be there for Macklin's draft. It was destined to be a huge part of hockey history, and she knew that. She was elated to be invited for it. "When I got the invitation, I was ten-times more excited because I knew you were the 'projected first overall'." She air-quoted the last bit, because it was less of a projection and more of a concrete fact. She just had to say projected for the politics of it all. She noticed his cheeks turn slightly pink and shy smile crash onto his face.
"That means a lot," he said quietly as his eyes raked over her features again. She looked so much like her dad but also not at all. It was a unique kind of beauty that was undeniable to anyone who looked at her. He heard his little sister clear her throat behind him, which made him turn his upper body toward his family. Charlie tight-lipped a smile at him, silently demanding he introduce them.
"Oh, uh, this is my family."
Macklin slid out of the way, leaving space between Sadie and his family. RJ was frozen, Aiden and his parents were smiling warmly, and Charlie was smiling like she just won a million bucks.
"Hi, I'm Sadie," she smiled and took a step toward them. She extended her hand to his mother and father, who shook it graciously. Even though she was only 18, her parents held a lot of respect for her. "Your son is a phenomenal athlete."
Robyn and Rick smiled even bigger at her, nodding in agreement. "We tell him everyday," Robyn joked, which Rick joined in on.
"It's nice to hear someone else say it," he laughed. Sadie laughed as well, but quickly disagreed.
"Plenty of people are saying it, trust me," she informed, moving onto his siblings. She shook Aiden's hand, who smiled at her politely, as he already had a girlfriend and was older than Sadie. She said hello to RJ, who could barely form a proper sentence, only producing the quietest 'Hi' anybody has ever heard. When she got to Charlie, it was a different story.
"Hi, I'm Charlie, I'm a huge fan," she beamed and shook Sadie's hand vigorously, making her entire arm shake violently. Macklin gritted his teeth at her from behind Sadie, which made Charlie look over Sadie's shoulder at him with a nervous look. Sadie then looked over her own shoulder at him, making Mack drop the look of disapproval and smile and nod. Sadie's gaze lingered on him for a moment before she looked back at Charlie, who had stopped shaking her arm but hadn't let go of her hand.
"Oh, you're so sweet," she smiled, cupping Charlie's hand with both of her own. "And beautiful. All of you six are gorgeous human beings," Sadie complimented before focusing on Charlie again. "Also, if you're anything like your big brother back there, I'm gonna be a big fan of yours too."
"Oh, don't go pumping the kid's tires now," Rick teased, gaining a laugh from the group that Sadie participated in. Macklin stepped forward discreetly, appearing at Sadie's side.
"I'm not pumping anybody's tires," she denied with a head shake. "I'm just being honest. He's special, this one." She tapped his forearm with the back of her hand.
"She plays tennis, actually," Macklin changed the subject, gesturing to his sister. "Internationally ranked, unreal player." He complimented, visibly proud of his little sister. Sadie looked up at him from the side, taking in the beauty of his family pride. He was such a loving person, she could already tell.
"What are they feeding the kids in North Vancouver?" Sadie joked, acting confused. This family was just something different, full of life and talent. Inside she knew the answer: money. But it was still fun to joke around.
"Sorry to interrupt, but, Miss Crosby, some people from TSN want to speak with you," a person with an earpiece tapped her shoulder, which stole her attention.
"Oh, gosh, we're probably holding you up," Robyn apologized in her thick Canadian accent. Sadie waved her off with a smile.
"Not at all, don't worry about a thing," she reassured. "It was great meeting you guys, you're all amazing people, I can already tell." She generalized, beginning her goodbye.
"It was great to meet you," Rick returned, shaking her hand again. "You don't get to meet one of the Crosbys everyday." For once, Sadie was the one blushing. Everyone makes such a big deal about who her dad is and she always forgets how important he is to people.
Sadie turned to Mack who was standing silently beside her. She placed a small, gentle hand on his impressive bicep, "Good luck, up there. Just look right into the lights and you won't see all the people." She jokingly advised with a serious look on her face. Macklin covered her hand with his own and gave it some gentle pats.
"Thanks," he huffed a laugh, tapping her hand again. "I might not see you after the ceremony, so, uh, bye, I guess." He murmured nervously, struggling to make the sentence make sense. Sadie got the point and giggled cutely.
"Probably not, so, uh, bye, I guess," she echoed mockingly, which made Macklin blush again with a shy grin. "Maybe I'll find you. Maybe I'll text you. Either way my congratulations will be extended," she smiled with her white teeth and plump lips that she inherited from her father.
She removed her hand from his bicep and she waved them goodbye, Mack and her holding eye contact as she was guided away by the agent.
"Oh. My. God," Charlie's jaw dropped as she watched Sadie walk away. "I just talked to Sadie Crosby. She called me beautiful." She said, her head whipping from her mom to her dad.
"She's even more beautiful in person," RJ said to himself but loud enough that everyone heard. "And she touched me." He brought his hand to his eyes and stared at the skin. Macklin smiled at their childhood antics.
"She is beautiful, isn't she?" Robyn looked knowingly at her son, and Rick smiled in the same way. Macklin rolled his eyes and turned away his family, exhaling to himself as they teased him behind his back, all going crazy about Sidney Crosby's daughter.
Holy shit, he thought to himself, how am I gonna keep this girl in my life?
