SAPPHIRE LE STARR
Oooh, two burly-girlies in one day? I'm spoiling you!
We're even closer to Sundae, I'm counting down the seconds!
Another finalist I'd like to show to you today won The 'Oh Velvet Suite' Show in Birmingham in November 2011.
Twinkle, twinkle Sapphire Le Starr, how I love how pretty you are -
Which heat of the newbie shows were you the winner of and when?
At 'Oh Velvet Suite' Broad Street, Birmingham, 4th November 2011 What did it mean to you as a performer, and an individual to win your heat?
It was my first Burlesque performance and I was very nervous, to the extent that I didn't seem to be able to keep my balance very well and I am sure I could even see my hands shaking! So to be advised the next day that I had won was such a great surprise and I was thrilled, though I couldn't quite believe it for hours! It was a huge confidence boost and I felt honoured because the other performers were very good. I was pleased that the audience enjoyed my performance, and that the time and effort I had put into the routines had been appreciated by them. Who or what inspires you as a performer?
The dedication and commitment of professional performers of today and of yester-year, both in Burlesque (Dita von Teese, Gypsy Rose Lee, June St Clair) and in other forms of dance (Liza Minnelli, Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev, Michael Flatley), and the way that their audiences are mesmerised by their awe-inspiring performances. What would it mean to you to win the finals?
It would be a huge surprise and honour, and a massive confidence boost, but it's unlikely! It will however be a fantastic experience to meet so many good performers and make new friends, and hopefully watch as many of them as possible dance their routines. I am really looking forward to the evening! Whats next for you in terms of your burlesque career?
To improve and perfect my exisiting routines and choreograph my next routines which I already have ideas for; to become better known on the Burlesque scene; and perform at as many shows and events as possible, all the time learning from the experience and from the more established performers. Eventually I would love to be a regular headline act who is in high demand; and to be invited to perform abroad too! If you could appear on the same bill as any performer (alive or not!) who would it be and why?
Ooh, that's not an easy question... In Burlesque it would be amazing to appear on a bill with Dita, or Amber Topaz who I saw perform recently and she was fantastic! In a non-Burlesque bill it would have been great to share a stage with the late Dame Margot Fonteyn and the late Rudolf Nureyev. What are your top 3 make-up/hair products and why?
Kerastase volume shampoo and volume spray as I have such fine hair, and a good lipbalm as I have dry lips...and 'Prune Pout' doesn't sound like a good Burlesque name to me!!!
Do you have any top tips for new performers starting out in 2012?
If you fancy trying a Burlesque class, just go for it girls! Don't let anyone or anything put you off trying! I was really nervous at my first class even though I desperately wanted to try Burlesque...and the funny thing was everyone in the class felt the same! But by the end of the first class we were all trying the moves and encouraging each other. And also I would say that Burlesque is for any shape or size lady - I was really worried I wouldn't fit in as I am not the typical voluptuous type that everyone thinks of when you say Burlesque! - but I found that it really doesn't matter - it is more about the confidence and inner feeling it gives you, and enjoying yourself and having fun -and everyone in the class was a different shape and size but all were too busy practising their own moves to worry what anyone else looked like!! Anything else you'd like to say?
I'd like to say a huge and genuine thank you to Rob Lowe for suggesting I have a go at a solo performance after my anticipated duet partner changed her mind! Without his encouragement I wouldn't have perfomed in November! Also a big thank you to Candy Carnival and Lola Lashes who were very supportive and informative on that night, and to all the lovely ladies and gents I met there and at my subsequent shows who have all been friendly and encouraging - it means a lot!

ALABAMA BOOM
Only 3 sleeps until The Newbie Show Finals!
We're excited, the wheels are in motion and everyones getting their game faces on ready to compete!
Today we'd like to show you Alabama Boom, who won the May heat at The Bear in Bearwood in Birmingham.
This little lady puts on quite a show, one not to miss!
Which heat of the newbie shows were you the winner of and when? I was the winner of the May heat in Bearwood, Birmingham.
What did it mean to you as a performer, and an individual to win your heat?
I was really chuffed-it's great to know the audience are having fun and enjoying what your doing- It was also a total surprise I actually didn't find out to till the next morning, cos I had to dash off to catch the last train- I was at my friends house when i found out and we danced around without stopping for about 15 minutes. Who or what inspires you as a performer?
Soo many things, from films to fairy tales to old cartoons I could go on for ages- sometimes I find ispiration in really random things. There are also so many inspiring performers out there- I have recently come across Natsumi Scarlett and the vivid angel who are both breathtaking and really adventurous.
What would it mean to you to win the finals?
That would be truly amazing.
Whats next for you in terms of your burlesque career?
I think in 2012 I wanna get a bit darker and start doing the more satirical / poltical ideas I've had on the boil for a bit- there is so much going on in the country and the world at the moment and I've always felt that caberet is a great place for this- but it is a bit scary career wise as it means stepping out of comfort zones and taking bigger risks.
If you could appear on the same bill as any performer (alive or not!) who would it be and why?
At the moment it would probably have to be Natsumi Scarlett as I've got a bit of a girl crush going on.
What are your top 3 make-up/hair products and why?
The Santuary do a fantastic face mask that works wonders ( and is also useful for other areas that might need firming up before a show!.) I would also be lost without wigs and false eyelashes- wigs are great because you can create so many different looks, I hate being stuck with one color hair- I'm too greedy I want all the colours!
Do you have any top tips for new performers starting out in 2012?
Dance classes! it doesn't have to be burlesque it can be any dance style but it really makes a difference even if dancing isn't really your thing-when I first started out I had no proper dance training so I'm really having to work on it now.
You can see more of Alabama and find out when she's next performing on her facebook - http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002438384573&sk=wall
PIXIE AMORE
Today we feature a lovely local lady, who oozes glamour and owns the most beautiful pair of lips we ever did see.
The pretty as a picture Pixie Amore won the Birmingham Sugar Suite heat in September 2011.
What did it mean to you as a performer, and an individual to win your heat?
As this was my first ever time on stage it was a huge confidence boost to be told I had done well and that it didn't look like my first time on stage. Who or what inspires you as a performer?
The 40's, musicals, all the glamour of that era and how women held themselves back then What would it mean to you to win the finals?
I'm not sure what i would do if I won the finals! Having not been performing that long it would be a huge honour, but being in the finals performing with everyone is a fabulous experience in itself. Whats next for you in terms of your burlesque career?
I want to continue performing as much as I can and hopefully get my name out there as an established performer, maybe one day look at running my own night. If you could appear on the same bill as any performer (alive or not!) who would it be and why?
That's a tough one! I would love to meet Dita of course. Gypsy Rose Lee and Sally Rand would be amazing if i had a time machine! I love the elegance of it all back in the 40's . What are your top 3 make-up/hair products and why?
Expensive isn't always the best, I love the Asda own weatherproof hairspray, as its super strong no matter how hot and bothered I get and it adds a nice shine.
Classic black eyeliner down to a small wing tip never fails to look good! I find felt tipped eyeliners are the easiest to use.
Always curl your eyelashes if you aren't wearing false lashes to help keep looking bright eyed and long lashed.
Do you have any top tips for new performers starting out in 2012?
Pick a song you like, that you would like to perform to then just smile and go for it, even if you mess up no one will notice if you keep smiling.

VIOLET VAYNE
And before we even knew what had hit us, it was nearly the weekend! Today we have our Blonde Bombshell from Bristol to show off, also known as The Derrière Extraordinaire.
Introducing the lovely Violet Vayne who won our Cardiff heat in May 2011.
What did it mean to you as a performer, and an individual to win your heat? It was the first time that I'd ever performed solo using my own routine and the experience was amazing. I was just so happy I'd been given the opportunity to perform and that I had done it. What really helped was that the audience's response was fantastic! I was on such a buzz that night (actually I was on a high all week!). It wasn't until the next day that I found out I had won and that was the cherry on the cake. I think that successful night ensured that I continued as a burlesque performer...I'm so glad :D Who or what inspires you as a performer? I am inspired by so many things... My Burlesque teacher, Andrea, from T&A Burlesque absolutely inspires me...if it wasn't for her I wouldn't be doing this. Other performers who 'think outside the box', old films, music - usually the music comes first with me and I visualise the routine pretty quickly in my head. The list is endless really.... What would it mean to you to win the finals? It's not the be all and end all to me but it would be great to win...I'm sure it would give me more confidence. Whats next for you in terms of your burlesque career? I'm happy to continue as I am for now. I work as well so I have limited time for the burlesque world. I am working on routines all the time though (I have many worked out in my head!) and hope to just keep performing them until people want me to stop!! If you could appear on the same bill as any performer (alive or not!) who would it be and why? Maybe Josephine Baker - she was unique... What are your top 3 make-up/hair products and why? No7 Amazing Eyes Liner, Elnett hairspray and Nicky Clarke hot rollers...couldn't do a burlesque show without 'em!! Do you have any top tips for new performers starting out in 2012? Stay true to yourself... Anything else you'd like to say? Don't think so! Ohhhh, except that I'm really looking forward to performing at the final, my first time in Brum, and meeting all the other finalists Like what you see? MISS BRUISE VIOLET
Wow-wee have the Newbie Shows been kind to you, my lovely audience!
Check out our next burly girly who's competing in The Newbie Show Final on Sundae 19th February -
Miss Bruise Violet! Miss Violet won The Newbie Show heat at The Sugar Suite in our lovely little city, Birmingham in April 2011. Who has had a little chat with us, here's what she's had to say for herself -
What did it mean to you as a performer, and an individual to win your heat?
It's always nice to have your performance appreciated and recognised so I was very flattered! I was a little nervous as I was probably one of the only non-local girls there and didn't have any friends there so I didn't think I'd get through but was super pleased when I did! It'll be nice to be back in Birmingham, there seems to be such a strong scene up there.
Who or what inspires you as a performer?
I take inspiration from tons of different places but have a very fond place in my heart for musicals and old-time Hollywood glamour. I also get very inspired by performers and artists who aren't afraid to take risks, like Marnie Scarlet and Lola LaBelle. Both fantastic performers who play with the genre in very different ways, to different and equally brilliant outcomes. As Frank Zappa said "without deviation from the norm, progress is impossible". I'm also a massive Kate Bush fan and plan to incorporate her music into a routine this year. She brings me to tears with her music and I hope to try and interpret her words through my performance.
What would it mean to you to win the finals?
I've had a pretty unbelievable year so winning the final would just top it off! I've gone from someone who was pilloried and put down by my teacher, told I'd never be a "proper" burlesquer to someone who regularly works the London circuit and beyond with some of the cream of burlesque and cabaret. Getting into the final of London Burlesque Week newcomer's contest was a highlight and I met so many amazing people. I feel very lucky to have come this far and winning the Final would be bloody lovely! I'd probably spend all the prize money on booze so the venue would do quite well out of it! But honestly I'm just happy to be involved.
Whats next for you in terms of your burlesque career?
I've had a bit of a break recently as I worked a crazy amount last year and almost burnt out so I'm working on new routines and working towards becoming full-time self employed. I want to spend as much time as possible gaining the skills which will improve my performance and to do that I have to leave my job. It's pretty scary but I'm comitted to learning my craft and that means sacrifice in other areas of life. More training, more costuming, more routines! I'll be adding more singing into my routines and cross-genre stuff. Comedy, singing, tease..... I want to show what I versatile performer I am. I don't just get my kit off!
If you could appear on the same bill as any performer (alive or not!) who would it be and why?
That's such a hard question! Burlesque and cabaret are SO varied that I could fill about 4 different line-ups with people from different styles! I would LOVE to do a duet, some sort of comedy showtune, with Mister Meredith, he's one of my favourite performers and a bloody lovely chap.
What are your top 3 make-up/hair products and why?
I'm a very basic gal when it comes to products. I get my eyelashes from the pound shop and don't splash out tons on make-up, it's how you wear it, not what you wear! I don't see the point in spending £20 on an eyeliner, never have. Setting lotion, red lipstick and a good stage foundation. Oh and hair dye of course! I'd be lost without it!
Do you have any top tips for new performers starting out in 2012?
Research your act, practice and don't be afraid to spend money on your costumes. There's nothing worse than seeing 5 mediocre fan dances on the same bill done by girls in cheap underwear. You don't have to spend *tons* of money but remember that your costumes are an investment and can set you apart from other performers. Practice your routines tons, research loads, watch as many shows as you can, be brave and don't be afraid to be different and do something totally off the wall! And network as if your life depends on it, because it does. I can be very shy and need to take my own advice on that one!
Anything else you'd like to say?
Just that I'm super happy to be performing at the final and regardless of the result I'm hoping to have a great time both onstage and off! Can hardly wait!!

KITTY KOKO
To cheer up a gloomy Tuesday evening, why not find out a little more about Kitty Koko! Kitty won our Blackpool Newbie Heats on Saturday 17th September 2011, and I get the distinct feeling she will go down very well in Birmingham!
What did it mean to you as a performer, and an individual to win your heat?
I felt incredibly honoured that my work had been critiqued by industry professionals and was awarded especially so early in my career. Also granting me further confidence to pursue my development as a Burlesque Artiste.
Who or what inspires you as a performer?
Coming from the seaside town of Blackpool which is so identifiable with variety, showgirls, drag queens and kings and it's rich history of performance there is never a dull moment for inspiration. And although my burlesque work does not execute her techniques, Pina Bausch has been an incredibly influential practitioner for me with regards to the body in performance.
What would it mean to you to win the finals?
Although I know I sound terribly clichéd, every performer wishes to be credited for their hard work and creativity. For myself, winning would be an remarkable achievement to what has already been an extraordinary year.
Whats next for you in terms of your burlesque career?
As any artiste would agree this is a very difficult question. I aim to develop my skills and knowledge of the art of Burlesque and work on the possibly of involving more contemporary skills while staying true to the art form.
If you could appear on the same bill as any performer (alive or not!) who would it be and why?
There are too many Burlesque performers I would love to be on the same bill with so I would have to opt for someone non burlesque related, it would be interesting to perform as part of an art instillation with Banksy.
What are your top 3 make-up/hair products and why?
I have naturally curly hair but under lights it can turn fizzy very quickly. Pre-show I use foam curlers and a loose hold hairspray. I try to avoid using heated products as much as possible. A little trick picked up from a Showgirl friend was to hairspray your face lightly to prevent make-up moving. I also swear by Airbrush Legs by Sally Hansen, if your legs are bare on-stage, it gives them a beautiful perfect pins look.
Do you have any top tips for new performers starting out in 2012?
Take some time the discover the artiste you want to be. Watch as many performances as you can, learn from new and old art forms and let your imagination be your guide.
Anything else you'd like to say?
I would just like to share my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who have given me the opportunity and resources to explore and develop my career as a burlesque performer. The North West Burlesque Society have not only been welcoming but an endless source of inspiration. Kosmic Kitty, who gave me my first burly slot in the UK and my boyfriend who tirelessly drives me to places (which I could never find on my own!) and has been my rock of support.
You can find Kitty's showreel, performance dates and contact details on; https://www.facebook.com/KittyKokoUK
Velvet Von Black
Our first Newbie we'd like to introduce you to is the multi-talented Velvet Von Black!
Velvet won the Newbie Show heat at The Varsity in Wolverhampton nearly a year ago on Saturday 19th March 2011 and will be competing in the finals on Sundae 19th February alongside all the other heat winners.
We asked her a few questions about the Finals and performing, and here is what she told us -
What did it mean to you as a performer, and an individual to win your heat? I was very flattered. There were some fantastic performers there that month, and as my style is so different to traditional burlesque I usually find people love it or hate it - I really didn't expect to win. Personally, I perform as it gives me confidence, and winning meant that these strange ideas of mine which I think may look good onstage actually do, so it gave me a lot of confidence to carry on doing things my way. Who or what inspires you as a performer? I hate to say it, but the person I become onstage. I'm so confident when I perform and I really wish I could be like that more in real life. I have very low self esteem a lot of the time, so having somewhere I can escape to where I am confident is very inspiring. I am always pushing myself to try new things on stage, because I feel as though I am invincible up there. What would it mean to you to win the finals? It would mean a lot. I have had a very rough year and burlesque has been a rock for me throughout. I love to entertain and if I win it will show I am doing something right.
Whats next for you in terms of your burlesque career? I'm not entirely sure if I'm honest. I started doing this because I am a corset maker and have a lot of costumes I had made over the years just for fun. I never dreamed I would love it so much and that it would become such a big part of my life. I'm on the look out for new places to perform, of course, and also learning some new fire tricks which I can use on stage to go with what I already do.
If you could appear on the same bill as any performer (alive or not!) who would it be and why? I had a think about this one for a while, and while there are a number of brilliant burlesque performers I would love the chance to share a stage with I would probably go for a "performer" of a different kind - I would love the chance to perform on the same bill as the band Mayhem, as their stage show is more of an inspiration to me as a performer than most burlesque performers I have seen. I use a lot of fake blood, fire and theatrics and I got this from going to Black Metal shows and finding them so much more entertaining because of this element. I'm not flirtatious or cheeky at all in reality and I have a rather dark sense of humor, so I wanted to shock more than look sexy on stage. I would be rather lacklustre as a cheesecake performer, but as a darker perfomer I can really shine.
What are your top 3 make-up/hair products and why? I love illamasqua make up - the foundations are the only ones which don't make me turn rather orange. Most of my make up is illamaqua, but my favorite lipstick is called "black cherry" and is from 17. It's almost black but with a hint of red and it's very sexy - I feel like a black widow when I wear it! As for hair products - I have a number of nice wigs which I rely on when I am having a bad hair day. My hair is very long and very unruly so they can be an absolute lifesaver at times! Do you have any top tips for new performers starting out in 2012? Be yourself. Don't perform in a certain way because you think you should, do what you want and you will shine. Anything else you'd like to say? A big thanks to Rob and the team for putting in so much hard work to make this happen, and thank you very much for inviting me back to the final
Thanks to Velvet for taking time out to speak to us, please check her out on Facebook and on her Youtube channel -
