An Open Relationship with my Thesis
I’m worried that I’m doing too much outside of research.
And by that, I mean people around me are worried that I’m doing too much outside of research. I’m just required to agree, even if I don’t want to.
I shouldn’t have to feel guilty about doing things I love. I’m intellectually polyamorous--I have many interests that feed into one another and enhances my experience, including research ability. I’m the pimp of different disciplines.
It’s reasonable to worry that my funding clock will run out and it’ll become nearly impossible to finish with financial worries. But I do have options if I don’t just focus on research. And, to be fair, I might take longer if I just focus on research anyways. Things happen; there’s no guarantee that my experiments will work.
In fact, they’re actually more likely to work if I build a solid base and have multiple paths. And that happens if I have multiple interests, time away from thinking about the project, and building new knowledge on old ideas.
So, in all reality, I might finish my thesis early. If I don’t, then that’s okay too. Life will always throw curveballs at you--but that’s only a problem if you’re solely focused on baseball.
