The Spectacle - set task for CHS
The image is of an ouroboros which is a symbol of a serpent biting its own tail. I specifically thought of the World Serpent from Norse mythology as I was reading. The World Serpent was tossed in the ocean surrounding Midgard when he was young and grew so large he eventually bit his own tail, encircling the world. I chose this image because through the whole text what struck me was how the capitalist structure is reliant on what it is apparently trying to defeat to exist. Capitalist are fooling workers or people dependent on the system by presenting what is arguably the cause of their misery as the solution, creating a mirage for desperate people because there is capital to be gained. Capitalist live outside the social structure, and are able to do so because we have a system driven by capital and therefore anyone with said capital are able to make their own rules, all the while presenting this life, the life of luxury and comfort, as a life attainable through purchase of the right product. This way the people waste the little capital they have on the force of their desperation, supporting a system that exploits them. Biting their own tail.
