Bayern hit five past Arsenal

Arsenal face a tough task to qualify from Champions League Group F after being outclassed by Bayern Munich.

The Gunners suffered a torrid first half as Robert Lewandowski's header, Thomas Muller's snapshot and David Alaba's strike put the hosts 3-0 up. Arjen Robben's first-time finish and a Muller breakaway strike came either side of Olivier Giroud's volley.

A record equalling European defeat leaves Arsenal six points behind Bayern and Olympiakos with two games left.

The Greek side's 2-1 win  over Dinamo Zagreb, achieved via a 90th-minute winner, means that qualification is out of Arsenal's hands and they are in danger of failing to reach the knockout stages for the first time in 13 seasons.

Mesut Ozil had a goal ruled out for handball when the score was 1-0 and Arsene Wenger's team improved after the break.

But Bayern's relentless pressing and ability to pounce on defensive errors exposed the visitors, who lost for a third time in four Champions League group games.

Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny was ruled out with a hip injury hours before kick-off and his replacement, Gabriel, was partly at fault for two of Bayern's three first-half goals.

With a groin injury to right-back Hector Bellerin, the Gunners now have 10 players on the injury list.

Southampton win south coast derby

Southampton got the better of their south coast derby, Bournemouth, in the first top flight meeting between the two sides.

Steven Davis volleyed Southampton ahead in the 31st minute with a close-range finish from Ryan Bertrand's cross.

Graziano Pelle doubled the lead within five minutes as he headed in Dusan Tadic's pinpoint ball for his sixth league goal of the season.

Victor Wanyama was sent off after the break for a second bookable offence when he needlessly tripped Bournemouth substitute Lee Tomlin.

But the Cherries, who had the better of the second half, were unable to find a way back.

A fourth defeat in five sees Bournemouth remain just a point above the bottom three while Southampton stretch their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions.

Arsenal duo will miss England Games

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has said that Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss next three games and two England internationals with injury.

Both of this players went off in Tuesday's 3-0 League Cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday.

They are set to miss Arsenal's games against Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur dan Bayern Munich in the Champions League and friendlies versus Spain and France.

"Nothing has changed since after the game. They are out but the scans are on Thursday - it's 48 hours afterwards. We hope they are light injuries."

Oxlade-Chamberlain, 22, suffered a hamstring problem after five minutes at Hillsborough and 26-year-old Walcott, who came on in his place, went off with a calf problem after 19 minutes.

England will play friendlies in Spain on 13 November and at home to France four days later.

Barcelona held third-tier Villanovense

Treble winners Barcelona underwhelmed as they struggled to a 0-0 draw at third-tier Villanovense in the first leg of their Copa del Rey last-32 tie.

Youthful-looking Barca, without regular forwards Neymar and Luis Suarez, only managed three efforts on target.

The second leg of the tie is at the Nou Camp on 2 December.

Villanovense, who had eight efforts on goal, went close through Javi Sanchez, whose header came off the bar.

Spanish forward Munir El Haddadi should have scored for Barca but fired wide from close range, while defender Marc Bartra had a header from a corner tipped over by keeper Jose Antonio Fuentes.

Barcelona keeper Jordi Masip said: "The most important thing is that we didn't give up any goals.

The Catalan club won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League last season.

Hewitt named as Davis Cup captain

Former world number one Lleyton Hewitt has been named captain of Australia's Davis Cup tennis team.

The 34-year-old takes over from interim captain Wally Masur, who led Australia in their semi-final defeat by Great Britain in Glasgow last month.

Hewitt announced earlier this year that he will end his playing career after the Australian Open in January.

He was a member of victorious Davis Cup teams in 1999 and 2003, and played in a record 41 ties over 16 years.

His first tie as captain will be a World Group first-round match at home against the United States from 4-6 March.

Klopp : Liverpool must calm-down

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp claims the club must collectively shake off the fear which engulfs his side every time things go against them.

Reds striker Christian Benteke headed in against Southampton at Anfield to put Klopp on course for his first win.

But Saints forward Saido Mane made it 1-1 when he levelled late in the game. "It's only a goal, only a game of football. It's like it's the last thing in your life and we have to calm this down," said 48-year-old manager.

"I don't understand this pressure but the guys feel it. I hope I'm not the only person in the stadium who thought 'this is not the end of the world'. We can work on this."

The German, who replaced Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool manager earlier this month, believes he has seen signs of progression in his players.

"I saw development, I saw the next step, but at the end we are disappointed because of the result," added former Borussia Dortmund coach.

"The problem is the other teams don't wait for us. They want to win, they want to beat us."

Young Player Treated Like Horses

Liverpool new manager, Jurgen Klopp, has compared the treatment of some young players to that of 'horses' after the midfielder Jordan Rossiter was injured on international duty.

The 18-year-old is injured after playing three European Championship under-19 qualifying games in six days.

He is out until mid-November and Klopp has demanded an explanation.

Rossiter, who made his Premier League debut as a substitute at Arsenal in August and has played in each of the side's Europa League games so far this season, has hamstring injury.

He was one of three players in the England side to play the full 90 minutes against Macedonia on 8 October, Finland on 10 October and Italy on 13 October.

Aidy Boothroyd's England side won the first two games and drew with Italy to come top of the first group stage of qualification.

Klopp said he had "never heard of a player of this age" playing so many games in so few days.

The FA declined to comment, but Boothroyd is in close contact with academy coaches at all clubs about players on international duty.

Royal Portrush for the 2019 Open Championship

The organisers of the event, the Royal & Ancient, are expected to be joined by Northern Ireland's 2011 Open champion Darren Clarke for the announcement.

It was revealed in June 2014 that one of the world's greatest tournaments would be returning to the Portrush course for the first time since 1951.

The Open will be the biggest sporting event ever held in Northern Ireland.

Representatives of the R&A will be at the course on Tuesday morning to formally confirm the details of the event, which is being supported by the Northern Ireland Executive.

Calls for the Open to return to Northern Ireland reached a crescendo after Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Clarke all won major tournaments in recent years.

The successful staging of the Irish Open at Royal Portrush in 2012 further strengthened the case for a return to the world-renowned seaside links.

The hosting of the event in 2019 depended on changes to the infrastructure being approved by club members and completed in good time for the championship.

As the event operates on a rota basis, it means after it initially hosts it in four years' time, Royal Portrush will also get future tournaments.

McIlroy in Contention in California

Rory McIlroy, 26, shot a four-under-par 68 to sit five strokes off leader Brendan Steele in California.

"It was a pretty solid score and I'm in a good position going in to the next three days," four-time major winner McIlroy told the Golf Channel.

England's Justin Rose also put himself in contention with a five-under 67, while Scot Martin Laird is seven under.

McIlroy responded to an early bogey with two birdies on his outward nine before picking up three more shots after the turn at Silverado Country Club.

"I felt like I played pretty well," the world number three added.

"I got off to a bit of a slow start this morning but gradually got into the round and started hitting some better shots and giving myself plenty of chances.

"I want to have chances to win golf tournaments, that's really my focus until the end of the year."

Depay and Van Persie in training ground Bust-up

Manchester United's Memphis Depay has been involved in a confrontation with Robin van Persie during a Netherlands training session.

Dutch boss Danny Blind confirmed the incident - which occurred before Saturday's 2-1 win over Kazakhstan - but played down its severity.

Blind said: "There are sometimes situations in training where players think different.

Blind, whose son Daley is a team-mate of Depay's at United, also stressed the episode had had no part in his decision to leave Van Persie out of his starting XI for the Kazakhstan game.

Former United and Arsenal striker Van Persie, 32, is his country's all-time top-scorer with 49 goals in 100 appearances - the latest of which came courtesy of a late substitute appearance on Saturday.

He left United to join Turkish side Fenerbahce in July, a month after Depay's arrival at Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven.

Chelsea Players Behind Mourinho

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill says Jose Mourinho has the full support of the players to turn things around.

The Blues have made a disappointing start to their Premier League title defence, having won just two of their first eight games.

Mourinho has been backed by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and Cahill says the players are also behind him.

"We are all around him," Cahill, who will captain England against Estonia on Friday, told BBC Radio 5 live.

"Dare I say he doesn't even need backing when you have done so much in the game, not just at Chelsea but in other leagues too.

"It is obviously nice to have that and he certainly has it from the players and the club."

This has been Chelsea's worst start to a top-flight season since 1978-79, and last Saturday's 3-1 defeat at home to Southampton was their fifth loss of the season.

"The Southampton game for me personally was a real low," added Cahill, who will take over as captain from the injured Wayne Rooney for England's final two Euro 2016 qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania.

Liverpool interested in Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti

Liverpool are interested in Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti as the search begins for a new manager, according to Sky sources.

Brendan Rodgers was sacked hours after a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park in the Merseyside derby left Liverpool with just one Premier League win since August.

A statement from the owners said "the search for a new manager is already under way" and, although neither has yet been contacted it is understood both Klopp and Ancelotti are in the frame.

It is not clear at this stage whether other potential candidates are being considered, but Liverpool plan to appoint a new manager before they go to Tottenham on October 17 after the international break and have no plans to appoint a caretaker as the hope to have the vacancy filled.

Both Klopp and Ancelotti are currently out of work, Klopp after leaving Borussia Dortmund and Ancelotti after he was let go by Real Madrid in the summer.

It emerged last month Klopp is keen on working in the Premier League, while Ancelotti won the title during a two-year spell at Chelsea.

It is understood, meanwhile, that Rodgers went into the Everton game unaware he would be dismissed and was informed of the decision in a telephone call with the club's owners some time after the game.

He then held a meeting with chief executive Ian Ayre.

Scottish Golf Swings into Action

A new governing body looking after the interests of Scotland's amateur golfers is launched on Thursday at St Andrews.

Scottish Golf replaces the Scottish Golf Union, which administered the men's game, and the Scottish Ladies Golf Association.

One of the organisation's key goals is to increase club membership.

A number of golf clubs in Scotland still deny women the opportunity to join as members, but Cannon says this is no barrier and she hopes to work alongside such clubs to help them develop.

In February, member of the SLGA backed the creation of the new body by an overwhelming margin of 204 to 0 at their annual meeting.

The amalgamation proposal was then vote through unanimously by all 16 area associations of the male.
