I remember seeing a post awhile back that had all the Jewish holidays laid out in a chart with which ones involve taking time off/not working/reducing work, which ones are just general "oh yeah, it's a holiday but not a Holiday" and such. Does anyone have that? My new literary agent is Jewish so I want to put everything into my calendar to make sure I'm not intruding on Holidays.
I'm not sure if this is the one you were thinking of but I have this saved to my phone to show friends who are in a similar boat as you. Hope this helps!
This is the one that makes the rounds every time there's a holiday, and it's a good one. For specific dates, Hebcal is a good option and can sync with Google Calendar, iCal, Outlook, etc. Whether your agent takes one day or two for holidays depends on their denomination and/or personal observance, so if you don't know it's worth assuming two. (Same for seven vs. eight for Sukkot and Pesach). Thank you for taking steps to stay aware of our calendar--it means a lot!
Oh, perfect, thank you! That google calendar one is perfect, exactly what I was planning to do on my own.
Just updating with a link to the original post, since it crossed my dash this evening, allowing me to remember who made it. I knew I had seen it in its original form here on Tumblr before it was reposted to literally every platform, but I didn't succeed at turning it up when I first saw this question.
this is for the people who went through trauma and didn’t come out of it with thicker skin. but, instead, came back with sensitivity to the world and a deep sadness that won’t go away. some of us went through something and lost a piece of ourselves; our broken hearts never healed quite right afterwards. i see you and i feel you and i am you. it’s going to be okay.
THEY WERE TELLING THE TRUTH
if this post gets to 200k i'll finally continue writing my fucking book. the only reason I'm saying this is because I need to find an excuse for not writing and the answer is to be able to say "I can't, my garfield post isn't at 200k yet"
Seeing the outspoken atheist anger about being called culturally Christian while most of the ex-Christian atheists I know (online and offline) haven’t unpacked the ways in which Christianity and being part of the hegemonic religion shaped their worldview is so funny to me.
You replaced the word devil with the word church. Congrats! That’s a good first step, but you can’t just end there.
Now it’s time to unpack why you’re deciding that minority religions are the same as Christianity. Now it’s time to unpack why you believe that thinking something is a crime, even if it’s not acted upon. Now it’s time to unpack why you think that everyone needs to believe the same thing as you. Now it’s time to unpack why you think that religion is even a useful classification. Now it’s time to unpack why you believe in punitive justice. Now it’s time to unpack why you think that argument is always antagonistic. Now it’s time to unpack why you think that humanity is irredeemable.
Christianity shapes so many aspects of my worldview as an observant Jew because it’s the water in which I swim. The Christian secular may seem like the default when you’re coming at it from observant Christianity, but it’s not neutral. None of its assumptions are neutral. And if you’re actually committed to claiming you’re no longer Christian, you need to do that work. Because otherwise you’re just a Christian with atheist dressing.

Was anybody else taught that you automatically go to hell if you commit suicide because you aren't "enduring to the end" or is that another specific microcosm of racist, backwater Idaho mormons?
TW MENTION OF SUICIDE
Jehovah's Witnesses used to straight up say you "will not enter paradise" if you commit suicide, but there's a little more leeway on paper now. Sure they won't say "you'll never see your loved one again", but no elder would be caught dead helping you with the funeral. I know of man who was forced to give his own brother's talk/eulogy cause everyone else refused. It's disgusting.
Utah’s safety net for the poor is so intertwined with the LDS Church that individual bishops often decide who receives assistance. Some deny help unless a person goes to services or gets baptized.
Although maintaining a safety net for the poor is the government’s job, welfare in Utah has become so entangled with the state’s dominant religion that the agency in charge of public assistance here counts a percentage of the welfare provided by the LDS Church toward the state’s own welfare spending, according to a memorandum of understanding between the church and the state obtained by ProPublica.
What that means is that over the past decade, the Utah State Legislature has been able to get out of spending at least $75 million on fighting poverty that it otherwise would have had to spend under federal law, a review of budget documents shows.
[…]
The bishop of her local congregation, called a ward, decided that as a precondition of receiving welfare, she would have to read, understand and embrace LDS scripture, Bellamy told ProPublica. Church representatives came by her apartment to decide what individual food items she did and did not need while pressuring her to attend Sunday services, she said.
A church spokesperson, who was not authorized to speak on the record for this story, said that Bellamy’s is just one experience, and there are likely thousands of people across Utah who would swear by the help they’ve received from the church and the guidance they’ve been given toward a more self-sufficient life. He said that because some bishops are more rigid about providing aid than others, some people may wind up in situations like Bellamy’s, but that most in the church default to compassion.
The spokesperson also said that conversations about welfare are between individuals (like Bellamy and others whose stories also appear in this article) and their bishop, and that the church would not break what it regards as a sacred confidentiality.

no but like. there's something so surreal about changing your hair and wearing the kind of clothes you want after a lifetime of pretending you're someone you're not and an even longer lifetime of rediscovering yourself to become the person you want to be and then finally getting to look in the mirror and going wow !!! yeah !!! that's me !!!! i want that someday and i hope everyone who doesn't feel like that yet will too soon
