Journey to the Microcosmos!
the funniest part of katmai fat bear week is the comments on the obviously smaller bears pictures like “i’m sorry king 😔✊ we love you but your opponent is simply very fat. we still love you”
op?? where are grazers ears???
not op but i do have pics of grazer!!! behold her ears...
Same energy
Hey just a quick reminder
Another quick reminder since i start seeing people saying “UwU both are good” in the tags and reblogs.
Reminder : it doesn’t matter how we portray them, they are dead so like let ppl have fun
But why does it matter dude I know it’s scientifically innacurate but ppl enjoying that innacurate version doesn’t have any negative applications???? Unless dinosaurs were brought back to life and ppl misidentified them or smthn it really has only negative impact keeping ppl from having fun with the fictional lizard dinos
It makes a big difference. People who make models for museums get passed over for projects because the owners don’t want to hear that their precious Jurassic Park lizards were actually weird birds, and “the public won’t get it anyway”. It makes a feedback loop so that even when people are presented with accurate depictions of past animals, they violently reject them.
Scaly raptors are also a gift to the anti-evolution fanatics, who like to pretend that the rarity of big mainstream feathered dinosaurs is in some way indicative of conflict and confusion in the paleontology community.
Also any variant of ‘It’s okay to ignore science and go with what you like’ is a dangerous mindset.
If you want some scaly monsters, make scaly monsters, and don’t call them dinosaurs
I think cultivating interest in dinosaurs is the first step in spreading accurate information. A lot of people find the revealation that a lot of them were feathered to be really interesting and it’s only a matter of time until that’s reflected in public consciousness. And some early dinosaurs were “scaly monsters” while some were floofy feather men. Understanding which was which should be interesting not a point of contention and stress. Otherwise people will disengage at the fear of being wrong.
Dinosaurs a cool. Lizards or birds.
No. Dinosaurs weren’t “monsters” or “lizards”, even for those that were fully covered in scales, this is specifically one of the main things we’re trying to fight against. Dinosaurs are animals, not monsters, and they are dinosaurs, not lizards, lizards aren’t even remotely closely related to dinosaurs, you might as well be saying that kangaroos are lizards.
Not only that, but the association of early dinosaur=featherless is likely vastly false, as we know at least theropods and ornithischians had a feathered common ancestor, and this likely is not ancestral to only dinosaurs, but ornithodira (pterosaurs+dinosaurs) in general, since the pycnofibers of pterosaurs are quite similar to dinosaur proto-feathers, and it seems more likely that both groups had a fuzzy common ancestor rather than both closely related groups convergently just evolving an important trait like a whole new form of integument.
People who “disagree with feathers”, or more so refuse accuracy in general, are actively working to cover facts and misinform people. There is a reason why we are trying to take this issue head-on, and people saying that we should “chill” only feel condescending, especially when it’s followed by spitting utter bullshit (like comparing dinosaurs to lizards and such), which is just further proving that we cannot “chill” on this issue.
If we chilled, no one would be speaking up against the media and awesomebros, and they’d have even more free range to keep the public in the dark and pick and choose what the public gets to glorify and what it gets to point at and mock. They made this is into this stupid “scientists ruin our childhood” fight, and, ultimately, we have to fight back, otherwise no one else will.
The true finnish aesthetic is growing up not knowing what gender your favourite characters are because there was no concept of gendered he/she pronouns.
And only finding out later and being somewhat dismayed by the results.
Welcome to the space age, ladies and gentlemen
This is really quite a big deal. A tremendous amount of modern research ends up being sold to journals which require unreasonable payments to access it and only pay the original authors a pittance. It’s nice to see an agency like NASA deliberately widebanding its findings.
Not sure if people fully realize just how big of a deal this is. THIS is how science is advanced. Not through biased corporate research, business secrets, marketing, paywalls and patent wars. But through open, uncensored and unrestricted public access to knowledge.

9/4/19 - Very exciting news! A brand new calf has been spotted in the CA216 matriline with grayish pigmentation, exactly like the little off-colored calf T46B1B in the Pacific Northwest. You can still see the faint fetal folds, indicating that this is a newborn individual.
This is not the same calf, family, or population from the PNW, however CA transients occasionally intermingle with other West Coast transient populations. Who knows what the genetic connection could be between these two calves, if there even is one!

are you ready for my favorite fact?
If you leave a hamster wheel out in the forest, wild mice will come and run on it.
that is my favorite fact
Bobcats and lynx will sit in cardboard boxes abandoned in the middle of the forest.
I asked the lynx researcher who told me this why, and he said “Cats, man” and shrugged.
This is now an “if I fits, I sits” appreciation thread.
I asked my boyfriend in Canada once, how he deals with polar bears because I was curious about what to do and he was like, just be calm, let them know you’re there, and give them space and they’ll usually just go away.
In Finland on the other hand.

In Finland, speeding tickets are calculated based on your income - causing some Finnish millionaires to pay fines of over $100,000. Source
This is what “equality” looks like in that liberal fairy tale land of Finland. They punish you proportionately to how successful you are. Sounds really “fair.”
Except… it is fair? Because it’s proportionate. I don’t get what’s difficult about that. An impoverished person paying $400 dollar fine isn’t the same as a millionaire paying the same amount. For the poor person, $400 dollars could mean starving. Would you really claim it would have the same consequence for a rich man? Would it even be noticeable to him, while the absence of food in their stomach would be glaring to a poorer man? Would it be fair for a man to starve for the same crime as a man that would be having a three course meal?
By taking income into account, it allows the impoverished able to still survive while paying any fines they may incur. And, ultimately, while $100,000 dollars would be noticeable to a millionaire, they would still get by. And, assuming the law is properly implemented, they would be paying the same equivalent of their yearly income that a poorer person would. That’s what makes it fair. They would be impacted the same way - but you are looking at the amount rather than the equation.
Also, it’s important to make sure that even the rich would pause at the cost of a fine. They need to fear the law just as a poor man does.
Oh no… rich people facing fines that might actually make them consider not doing illegal things because the punishments might actually hurt them… how unfair… -V
Finnish person here. Our speeding ticket system owns and only people who bitch about them are people who wanna break the laws - the loudest whiners are the rich people who think they can just pay their way out of trouble and that’s why we have laws like that.
400 dollar ticket.
Person making 10 dollars an hour: “Fuck, I better slow down”
Millionaire driving a Jaguar: “LOL 400 DOLLARS, FUCK THAT, NYOOM”
Compared to a proportional ticket.
Person making 10 dollars an hour and must pay 400 dollar ticket: “Fuck, I better slow down.”
Millionaire who must pay 100,000 dollar ticket: “Fuck, I better slow down.”
Like wtf. Some people have been so brainwashed by capitalism and worship of the rich that they literally can’t tell the difference between fairness and unfairness anymore.
It IS fair. The fact that it flies in the status quo so much should make you think about that status quo.
