This special is from a scene much further in the LU comic. It felt like a fitting way to reflect on the journey that started it all. What an impression it left, as we still feel that sense of adventure all these years later.

The next sight of smoke billowing to the skies is a settlement which makes Legend exhale in relief for his aching feet. He stretches his arms above his head, elbows and shoulders clicking as he does so. Blowing a piece of fallen hair from his eyes, he gazes to Wild who is crouched by a tree stump picking brightly coloured mushrooms.
"What are you doing?" The veteran questions, huffing the words out as he crosses his arms over his chest.
"Foraging. Who knows that these can do." The hero in blue answers with a smile, the burnt skin of his jaw and cheek makes Legend inwardly wince. "Well, hurry up." He mutters, for some reason he sticks close, watching the treeline as Wild's slate bleeps.
After another few moments, the two join the group and the approach the gates of the village. It's quaint aside from the many roaring fire pits that are dotted around. The houses, made from stone and clay it seems with wide wooden doors that swing open in the breeze. The village is empty. Lonely as the lily pads in the pond or the weak squawk of a pigeon in the trees.
"…It's deserted." Four murmurs out, frowning as they peer into a cracked window seeing empty tables and toppled chairs. " What happened here…" they add quietly to themselves as they walk on.
"Maybe they were raided."
"Should we look for survivors?" Sky offers as he looks at Time who stares around with his one eye open and narrowed. The hero of Time seems to gaze onwards and as Wild steps closer he wonders if the old man could see the past of this place.
"We should keep moving. See to any hints of this place .. captain, what do you think?"
Warriors' stands by what seems to be a village board of notes and letters and information, peering at a half torn piece of paper stick there with sticky sap. "…They were attacked, multiple times it seems. This here is an appeal to the Hyrule guard to aid them…it seems for some reason, who ever is king, refused."
Warriors' voice is tight, his jaw set and his eyes narrow at the signed piece of paper with a grave expression. Wild winces as he comes over to peer at the information board, skimming over a few things before looking around. The village's inn is ahead and as Warriors' steps forwards to let Wild look at the board, he notices dark stains.
"We shouldn't be here." He says flatly, one hand resting back on his hip tense and awkward as he gazes onwards. He isn't sure where they are but one thing is for certain, this place isn't safe and hasn't been for a long time.
"Anyone recognise anything?" Time gently asks as they all wander the street peering into windows or poking half open doors. Everyone goes quiet giving Time the answer he needs. No one knows this place. They're in an era of conflict between all of their eras. Which could only mean one thing…
Twilight stops beside Wild, straightening his back as something rushes in the corner of his eye. He turns his head slightly, inhaling deeply to catch the damning scent of another. He steps forwards and turns his body to scan for the threat again, meeting Sky's gaze pointedly in the process.
"Stay close together." He announces, jaw clenched as he watches Wind and Legend exit from a run down store of sorts. The sailor is stuffing something into his pouch and Twilight supposes old habits die hard - of course the sailor would be stuffing his pockets after his life at sea.
A rush of air makes Wild stand back up from where he was analysing the mushrooms growing from the cracks in the house he's beside, his Slate buzzing as he slides it on his hip securely. He frowns as he turns towards the soft sound of a giggle close by.
Whizz. Crackle. Pop.
"Wizzrobe!"
Lightening cracks down against the earth so bright that it makes Wild see spots in his vision even as he hunches down shielding his head. He grits his teeth, he couldn't make out who shouted but now he knows what what's seen them. The wizzrobes of his era often roamed in circles and nothing more, till they saw you that was.
"Wild!"
There's another shake of the earth and the champion jerks into motion. His bow materialises in his grip as he manages to avoided getting struck by the golden jagged light. Someone else's arrow soars free with a thwap and the Wizzrobe dances in giggles again.
"Damn thing won't stay still ." Legend huffs out, both he and Wind have an arrow notched on their bows, both heroes firing once the enemy raises it's jagged wand. Two arrows plunge into its chest making it stumble down to the ground where it meets Twilight's blade. The monster squeals, flailing and then exploding into rich purple mist.
"…I said stick together." The captain mutters under his breath, grabbing Wild's arm to pull him back and the Champion just shrugs as he hooks his bow to his leather harness that keeps his items secure on his back.
"I didn't even hear it."
"None of us did."
" Looked like one of mine but…I dunno, I didn't even hear it." Wild sighs, shoulders braced as Warriors' stops and turns to him. For a moment he isn't sure what Wars is looking at before he shrugs it off and continues walking with the rest of the group.
Moving through the dilapidated village, the cobwebs and broken doors and shattered windows further fuels the hero's distaste of the area. There was no way a simple Wizzrobe did this. And when they come to end of the settlement to where vast trees and hills roll onwards, Hyrule stops to take in the scenery quietly.
"Do we make camp close by?" Sky asks, looking around himself and making his white sailcloth sweep across his back. Time's firm expression gives him the answer that no, that would be stupid. "We were led here for something, surely." Sky presses on till he stands beside Hyrule at the edge of hill. Looking down, there's a creek of sorts and something catches his eye.
"Hey guys, look at that." Hyrule points down, eyes blazing with intrigue and he crouches as if to get a better look. The sailor is bounding up to him, spyglass in hand as he looks down towards the creek. It's overgrown, lily pads and frogs hopping about before he finds it.
"Ruins."
"Could be a temple or something." Sky agrees under his breath, adjusting his belt and finding his beetle. He catches Time's gaze who nods and Sky fired the golden scabbard down towards the ruins.
"See anything?" Twilight murmurs as the chosen hero adjusts the wristband, a small orb of light transmitting from the beetles view. There's rolling trees and then mud. Water and lily pads and then long vines that sweep downwards from its parent trees. They climb all over the ruins, moss and tuffs of grass spewing from the cracks. But then he sees it, the archway.
"…I've seen this before but …makes no sense."he says softly. " You think we're a few year after your era?" Twilight questions. "More like a couple hundred years yeah."
That leaves a bitter taste in Sky's mouth. If this is the surface of his era, then why didn't he recognise much? But then again, Faron Woods was always tough to navigate. And he never encountered Wizzrobes on his journey.
"One way to find out." Sky says, calling his beetle back and it beeps a few times before settling on the wristband.
"If this is what I think it is, we'll either be in luck … or we'll need our swim wear." He says to everyone who tilts their head in the exact same way it almost makes Sky laugh. They really are of each other.
"…Explain?" Time asks softly, hands on his hips as he looks Sky over once and then again.
"…During my …travels…Faron Woods was protected by a spirit known as well, Faron. She's an ancient dragon who protects this portion of the surface alongside Eldin and Lanayru. During my travel, she flooded Faron Woods to try and sweep away the monsters that invaded the woods. Back then I …had to learn the Song of the Hero from each three guardians, they were tedious at best." Sky sighs in remembrance before shrugging it off.
"So you think Faron could've been the reason …for this?"
"She's quirky but she's a devoted servant to Hylia. She shouldn't…"
Sky trails off, getting a gruelling sensation in his gut. If Faron has somehow been contaminated with black blood, he doesn't know what that could mean. "All four of the dragons… believe they settled back down on the surface after the battle…you think the Shadow could've …"
Time's hand is heavy on his shoulder but he finds comfort as he meets the one eyed hero.
"Let's not jump to conclusions. First we find a good place to set up camp, then we go deeper in - " Time's gaze drifts to the rest of his boys only to find only seven of them. Two were missing.
"Wild? Hyrule?" Slowly, eyes scour the treeline, looking every which way before he hears Legend's voice.
"Those idiots went without us!"
Turning sharply to look downwards at the murky waters, Time catches a glimpse of Wild's blue tunic vaulting over one of the ruin's walls with Hyrule's messy mop of brown hair following behind. Twilight groans, huffing out a breath of annoyance. The air turns stagnant with concern and baited breath before Time exhales calmly.
Back in 2017, while I played BotW, a thought crossed my mind... What if the time Link had after his resurrection was only lent? And he had to give it back after he fulfilled his destiny...
Are y'all still interested in the solar punk au idea I had? 👀👀👀 It'll take some work and time to think of a plot and such but if y'all are okay with waiting a bit and are happy with The Wild Era rn I can see what I can cook up in the meanwhile

Ringing is the first thing that comes to him, loud obnoxious rings in his ears that make Wild reach clumsily to cover them before tumbling forwards into nothingness. His feet touch thin air and then hands grasp him tightly to pull him backwards.
" Whoa there champ, you're alright. The first time is always the worst."
With a groan, hand holding his head, Wild looks around and sees lush green forests and leaves fluttering down in the stages of autumn. He winces, testing his footing. Hard solid ground meets his boots.
"You good?" He turns to see Twilight holding onto his upper arm and he manages a weak, nauseous smile.
"All good." He signs back as he inhales deeply. He spots the others ahead, Time and Legend talking with the vet throwing his hands on the air and tapping his foot like an impatient bunny.
"Is anything familiar?" Time's voice cuts through the haze in Wild's mind and he's able to grasp that they're no longer in Kakariko or even his era anymore. This is a totally uncharted place for Wild, which sends a brief giddy feeling up his spine with an ache to discover.
"Nope. It's not mine that's for sure. Anyone else know where we are?" Legend answers again with a bite to his words that makes Wild wonder if the two were arguing.
"Maybe we're in-between eras again." Warriors frowns and adjusts his blue scarf, the fabric flapping in the little cooling breeze. Sunlight dances on the trees which still hold their leaves and the canopy makes Wild's eyes ache in a nice way. He remembers staring at that dazzling patters of sunlight before.
"Which means we stick together once we find a path or trail. Keep close, who knows whereabouts we are -"
Wild's ears twitch slightly as he glances around again. Twilight lets go of him in favour to look back at Sky and Four and Wind who huddle together to keep the smithy from collapsing after the portal. He catches a glimpse of Four's eyes shimmering in different colours, it's just barely noticeable but as the young blacksmith lowers his head to swallow back bile, Twilight winces in sympathy.
Hyrule shifts his footing, tapping the ground with his heel as he looks around and stretches before the group slowly moves forwards in a formation that finds Wild dead centre.
"We never asked, but got any skills hiding around? Aside from cooking?" The traveller asks, falling into step beside their newest member.
"Oh… I dunno." Wild shrugs and adjusts the slate on his hip. He hasn't brought the master sword, rather he left it in Zelda's care which he hopes was the best idea.
"…I suppose I'm versatile in weapons, I mean …I used a lot more than a sword in my journey."
"You mean like a bow?" Hyrule questions, rolling his shoulders when Twilight chuckles deeply from behind them but pays no interest in the conversation.
"Yeah, I'm pretty good with a bow." Wild nods out, shrugging as Time casts a glance back over them. If anyone seems to do a headcount it's Time.
"Archers are always a good teammate. How's your sword skill?"
"Obviously good if the master sword chose him duh," Wind jabs at the captain who rests a hand on his hip with an arched brow.
"…Like I told you, I was knighted young and trained ever since I got my hands on the sword in the frost place." Wild answers, meeting the captain's gaze for a moment. There's a look of fondness and harsh challenge almost as if Warriors' was ready for something else to be said.
"And when was that?" Time pitches in from the front as they wander around the forest in search of anything that seems remotely like a settlement.
"I believe I found the sword when I was twelve."
" You're joking -"
" No it's possible, I mean, I set out across the Great Sea when I was that age," Wind chirps up to shut Legend up. The sailor shrugs and picks at the moss growing on the tree trunk as he passes it.
"But you're saying you trained with the sword all that time? Til your were seventeen?" Sky questions, tilting his head like he does when he grows a little tired. Wild nods stiffly.
"When the calamity struck and I …failed to protect them…Zelda tells me she took the sword to the Great Deku Tree where it was bathed in sacrad light till I woke. By then, I had to prove myself all over again…"
"She needed you to be ready, that is all." Sky says, smiling fondly to his new brother who hums in thought.
"I see smoke!" Wind jumps up, a small spyglass in hand as he leans forwards into it and Wild almost reaches to pulls he young hero back.
" Campfire smoke perhaps?" Warriors' suggests, taking his spot up by Time who nods stiffly.
"Let's move slowly first. It could be an monster camp." Time murmurs, the hero of Time is suddenly squaring his shoulders and for a moment Wild has to do a double take. In the angle and the light, even Twilight seems on edge as he gazes at his mentor knowingly.
Wild rubs the back of his head, deciding to follow the group quietly. Upon getting closer, Wild notices the rotting stench and he covers his mouth and nose to stop himself gagging. It's not a nice camp that's for sure, if the spikes and bloody footprints had a say in it.
"…Dear Hylia…"
Wild crouches in the tall grass, they all do with ease. Wind pulls his spyglass free and looks in-between the grass just as Wild hesitantly opens his Slate to do the same. He adjusts it, getting a clear image as he tilts his head towards the camp. Three hulking moblins are crouched over smoldering fire pits with clubs resting against a cut down tree. Four bokos are scattered around, three with swords in their grubby hands. One with a bow.
Wild swallows thick, he's never seen bokos like that but Wind has.
"Those bokos are from the Great Sea," he mutters with a sudden excited grit in his tone. It seems as though the sailor was aching for some action finally.
"And those moblins …" Wild nods, he'd know those red moblins anywhere.
"They're from my …my Hyrule." He says, putting away the slate. "Red ones are weaker but they're deadly in a pair. But they're slow," he points out quietly making Warriors' nod contently that he's getting information.
"Six. That's somewhat doable. Wild can you -"
"I can handle the moblins."
"You're not taking two alone. You said they're slow, Vet you'll aid him with those fancy boots of yours." Time orders easily, the hero's voice calm and put together despite the danger. "Hyrule stay with smithy till he can see straight again. Twilight, you're on stray duty. Everyone else, pick a target."
And there they were, huddling in the grass quietly. Wild had briefly told Legend that the moblins are usually rather stupid, leaving their backs unarmoured which is perfect for a quick sneak attack. The two slink off despite Legend's grumbling of babysitting the new guy. Wild rolls his eyes, slowly pulling his soldiers sword free in his right hand. He creeps slowly, waiting and waiting before the bokos begin to squeak and squawk and jabber once they are attacked. He spots Sky and Warriors' easily slicing through a boko together whilst Wind takes on the blue grubby one weilding an odd looking sword.
The moblins, now alert to the threat, raise up to find their clubs but Wild intercepts. He charges quickly, slicing at their legs and side stepping quickly to avoid its massive hands that come to defend its body. Wild smirks, seeing Legend bolt towards it with unparalleled speed to hack and dice the monster with quick movements. Wild jumps sideways to avoid its body toppling over only to be caught in the second's line for sight.
The moblins bellows, pounding its chest with its fists before swiping a club from the broken tree. It charges and Wild waits.
"What are you doing, move!" Legend shouts but Wild doesn't even break eye contact with the monster as it charges and swings it's mighty club in a wide arc. Wild easily backpedals, time seems to slow around him as he launches himself forwards with deadly accuracy to attack. The squealing of agony rings in his ears but when he finally lands after getting a good few hits in, the moblin is still standing despite the deep gashes in it's tough skin.
And there's black ooze spilling across the grass and all over Wild's sword.
"Black blood!" Legend yells suddenly, racing forwards to grab Wild's arm, yanking him sideways to avoid being smashed by the raging creature.
"Huh?" Wild is confused, following Legend's movement to circle the beast but keeps a good distance. "It's infected, means it isn't like a normal moblin. It's amped up, more difficult to kill." Legend pants from beside him, the red tunic swishes around the vet's legs.
Wild frowns. He hardens his gaze as he looks at the moblin who roars, charging forward again. Wild meets its head on, sliding under its swing of the club to stab upwards as he slid through the beasts legs. Jumping up behind it, Wild grits his teeth as he unclips his shield from his back just in time for the moblin to swing around.
The wooden club meets the traveler's shield with a heavy thunk before Wild dives in to attack once it's stunned. Legend follows up, plunging his sword into the moblin's back and slicing through skin and muscle. It falls to its knees, struggling before Wild ends it with a swift slice to its throat. It sags to the ground choking on black blood before struggling to stand again.
Wild looks at it in surprise, how was it still trying to stand?
He jerks back as the moblin stretches and contorts itself to reach him, reflex kicking in as he slices his sword through its wrist fluidly. He grimaces at the spew of black inky blood.
Within its last few moments it gurgles and splutters before sagging. Wild's brows knit together and the chaos of the battle rings in his ears. Turning he spots the sailor locked against one of the bokos, pressing forwards and hacking and slicing. He steps forwards sheathing his sword in favour of his bow. He draw it taut, easily plunging two arrows into the lunging boko's side. It squeals and stumbles, looking around before spotting Wild and letting out a croaky roar. Wild smirks a little finding it utterly pathetic as Wind takes the chance and finishes it off.
"Mind telling me what black blood means?" He mumbles, lowering his bow slightly to look at the veteran who's cleaning his sword with a shrug. "I dunno. What am I, am encyclopedia?" Legend scoffs out and puts his sword away to cross his arms. The two stand in a puddle of black goo, the moblins melting into nothing leaving behind their clubs.
"Uh huh. Twi tells me you've been through more journeys than the others."
"Well, whatever. From what we know anyway short stack, is infected monsters don't die easily."
"Wow, didn't realise that." Wild jokes with an dry laugh before Legend glares at him as if he's stupid.
"Time thinks it's one the of the reasons we're brought together in the first place. Something to do with …something that feeds off of dark power."
"Like Ganon then?"
"Or another minion yeah."
The rest of the Chain father slowly in a circle, everyone glancing over each other for wounds or issues. Hyrule is holding Four by his waist, the smithy green in the face still but mumbling about how he would've been fine. Twilight trots back, his hair dishevelled and he's wiping his mouth with a grimace. It didn't take anyone too long to realise he had shifted during the battle to catch the odd boko who tried to flee.
"No one injured? Great work there you two." Time complements once his shoulders relax. Warriors' and Sky join them and the chosen hero exhales deeply, hands on his knees breathing hard as Warriors' pats his back rightly with a chuckle.
"Well that was easier said than done." Wind murmurs out, resting on his sword that he placed point first into the dirt. He shrugs, looking at Wild with a smile. "Thanks for the save but I'll have you know I'm fine on my own," he explains with a slight pout but Wild shakes his head.
"I'll always have your back. All of you." He says firmly but it's directed to everyone. He won't let it happen again, he won't fail this time. He'll protect them first and worry about himself last. So long as everyone else was alive, that was all that matters to him. Because what else would there be if he failed again? Maybe it would prove that he truly wasn't chosen after all.

"Hmm, hm, hmm," Link stirs the cooking pot quietly, wooden spoon in hand, head tilted slightly to the left as he hums under his breath. The pot boils some white rice, all hand collected by a few of the farmers out in the paddies of Kakariko. In another cooking pot, Link cooks up a handful of heart bass' and sprinkles salt across their bodies. He sighs as he flips the fish over, cooking it evenly before beginning to hum once more.
"What'cha cooking up?" The sailor's voice chirps up from beside Link, startling the wild hero who jolts with a gasp once he's broken from thought.
"Seafood rice balls, it's a favourite of mine," he answers as Wind leans over to look at the two pots with eyes wide. "You like fish too? Their abundant in the Great Sea, ya'know? Did you save the eggs?"
Link smiles and nods, picking up a small wooden dish filled with red ripe eggs he gathered prior to cooking. "The Great Sea huh? We've got somewhat of an ocean out by Lurelin village. I get most of my fish and crabs there and in Zora's domain." Link makes soft conversations, the sailor seems eager to watch, crouched beside him with hands itching to help. Upon noticing it, Link smiles and once the rice is ready and the fish is cooked to perfection, he scoops up a small spoon full of rice to begin moulding it.
" Here, coax that into a half ball for me." He says, handing the young hero the warm sticky rice to mold into a ball eagerly. Between the two of them, they make a hearty platter of fifteen rice balls all topped with fish eggs.
"I'll go get the others so we can eat!" Wind jumps up eagerly, taking off into the Inn and Link spots the sailor darting out the back door to the pumpkin patches too.
"Holy Hylia that smells good,"
"Who's cooking?"
"Oh, Link! I didn't realise you were out here," Sky approaches smoothly, his white sailcloth blowing in the breeze as he takes a seat on the bench beside High Spirits Produce where there's carefully placed seating areas.
"You made all this?" Four asks as they come into view suddenly beside Legend who plonks himself down on another bench.
"Sailor helped," Link smiles a little, shrugging and he places a few bowls out for them all. "Bet they taste better than anything Hyrule would made," Legend jokingly adds in with a smug expression on his face. He reaches for one of the rice balls, mouthwatering, and bites eagerly. The veteran practically melts into the bench, his cheeks turning a shade to match his hat.
"That good huh?" Four asks with a cocked brow, their blond hair pushed back by a green band as they reach for their own rice ball. "Shut up smithy," Legend mumbles, though he can't help but eagerly finish his own food.
Soon enough, the rest of the group joins them. Twilight and Warriors' sit on either side of Link, patting his back in hellos and Time is awfully cheerful as he perches at the edge of the table with Hyrule and Wind.
"You're definitely staying with us, with cooking skills like that we ain't letting you go too easily." Warriors' smirks, wiping a smudge of rice from his upper lip and there's a chorus of encouragement from the rest of the group.
"What were you eating prior?" Link asks, confused almost before Sky pulls a grimace . "Well … none of us are exactly good cooks. Time makes a mean eggy toast but that's about it. Warriors' thought of a hearty meal is just …porridge."
"It's good for you, keeps you warm -" the captain shrugs and Twilight scoffs softly. "I've never really cooked much, even back in Ordon I'd collect ingredients but …"
"How have you survived this long without cooking?"Link gawks at his friend, eyes wide and the burn scars around his cheek and jaw are pulled taut. For a moment, Twilight wonders if they still hurt.
"A lot of Inn's have good food, Hyrule is our …thief I guess."
"Thief?" Link questions and upon such, the mage himself boldly plants his hands on the table as if ready to make a grand speech. Before he can however, Legend pinches Hyrule's rice ball and the two lock eyes for a split second.
"Hyrule is our number one guy if you need anything particular, same as Ledge but 'rulie can steal bread and cheese and even …certain meats apparently." Wind jumps into conversation, mouth full of sticky rice of which Warriors' promptly covers the young sailor's mouth with his hand. "Don't be rude sailor." Is all the captain mumbles before going back to his own food.
"Whilst I don't agree with it, I understand that Hyrule came from an era where things are far more rougher than we expect. He hasn't told his much but from the looks of his items and the way he so easily steals, it's safe to assume it is normal." Time adds just as the two heroes bicker and lunge at each other for Hyrule's rice ball. Legend's hat gets tossed on the table, narrowly missing Four's bowl of food and one of Hyrule's gloves ends up flying overhead where Sky ducks with his hands cradling his rice balls carefully.
"You said something about a fishing village?" Wind, after finishing his meal, looks at Link again with a tilt of his head.
" Lurelin, yes. It's quite a trek from Kakariko, back through the Peaks and all the way to the Bridge of Hylia and then through Faron Woods. Why do you ask?" Link tilts his head in return, meeting the sailors eyes as Twilight claps him on the back for a merry good job of cooking for them.
"Just …wanted to know."
Twilight hums in thought, he knows Wind is likely to be missing home and therefore anything about fishing or even an ocean sparks ideas in the young hero's mind.
Before Twilight could offer an idea of travelling the Lurelin just for the sake of travelling, Sky stands up with a glassy haze in his blue eyes. The Skyloftian's body is taut, shoulders so square it makes Twilight feel a tan smaller than he is.
" Sky?" He calls out to check on the chosen one, Sky's cheeks pale as he stumbles to get up and down the ugly wooden steps to look left and then right.
"Hold that thought sailor, I think Sky's got something." He mumbles and everyone - including Legend who is currently pinned against the railing dangling Hyrule's rice ball over the side jerks to attention.
"What? Is he okay?" Link feels something, a tug and a pinch in his gut making him wary. Time hums deeply, noticing the way Sky's gaze has drifted up upon East Hill finally.
"I believe it may be time to gather our items properly."
Time's words don't make sense to the Wild hero who looks to Twilight again. The shape-shifter pats Link's shoulder again before sighing deeply. "Sky's usually the first to notice a portal. Being the first chosen hero, comes with benefits I guess." He answers the lingering confusion as the other begin to clear their bowls and head back to the inn.
"You're …leaving?"
"You're coming with us this time, Wildcat."
-
Upon entering Impa's house, Link finds the Sheikah chief settling onto her pillows and he spots Zelda flicking through old notebooks - ever the curious one, he thinks to himself. Slowly approaching, Impa takes the words out of his mouth.
"Hylia has called upon you once more, has she not?"
Zelda perks up, head turning so quickly Link worried about whiplash. He swallows the lump in his throat, squaring his shoulders as he looks at Impa.
"I'm told to go with them." His voice wavers so signs along with himself so both can understand clearly. He didn't want his voice to crack, to seem weak. But leaving seems impossible and he doesn't quite understand the whole thing.
"Link." Zelda's hands are warm as they clasp around his own, twin flames stare into each other for a moment before she leans and embraces him so tight he enables sharply. Zelda smelt of wood smoke and old books, hints of ginger warm bread curl around her. A smell he won't forget.
He hugs her back, no words needing to past their lips.
"I understand your faith is shaken with all that happened but please, know that I am with you every step of the way."
Seeing the portal for the first time made Link feels a type of way. Like his skin was tingling and melting all at once, his very soul feels like it's being yanked on by a thread towards the swirling purple mist of a triangle in the middle of East Hill just before the great fairy spring. Link wets his lower lip in thought, standing before it with eyes narrowed at what could be on the other side.
As he looks around again to see the others readying their gear and armour, he spots Warriors' aiding Time with a few buckles of the old man's chestplate and there's a moment where Wind and Four help each other with other items. Link jolts when a hand presses on his shoulder, glancing over to see Sky behind him.
"Do you have all that you think you'll need?"
Link nods stiffly and he's met with a sudden ache of remembrance of this sort of action. Over a hundred years prior, at Lanyaru Provenance, he recalls walking the princess back to their group of champions. Only this time, Link holds a deep rooted dear of what if he fails them too? What if what ever is waiting for them beyond, Link will lose them too? What -
"I know that look. Don't let yourself spiral my friend." Sky speaks once more and Link blinks hard to meet the chosen's gaze. Sky is something else, almost regal.
Link lifts his hands, signing a quick apology before Sky pats his shoulder.
"We need to give you a name, a nickname I mean. It'll get confusing if we all shout Link in the midst of battle."
"Champion works well," Time says as he steps forwards adjusting his arm guard. Twilight shakes his head. "So does Wild,"
Link glances a puzzled expression at Twilight before a smile forms, dimpling his cheeks. "Wild? Why that name?" He questions though he knows why already - Twilight had been some the crazy shit he was able to do without even thinking. It would suit him just fine.
"Yeah, why Wild?" Sailor asks, bounding up to the group with a few strides.
"I think you'll understand if and when we'll get into another battle. Just don't get in his way," Twilight muses out, one hand reaching go ruffle Link's hair fondly before the champion grumbles to himself.
"Enough chit chat. I believe it is time."
The captain is the first to stride into the swirling purple mist, his body seemingly melting against nothing. Link - now Wild - feels queasy in a way that reminded him of then he first stepped into this ruined world of his. Who knows what's on the horizon, he just hopes this time he can protect these people who have accepted him so gently. He refuses to let them down, not again.
" First times always weird. Expect anything and everything." Sky soothes him as if able to sense the growing nausea of leaving home.
Link turns once to gaze at Kakariko. He spots figures at the foot of Impa's house and his heart squeezes. With a hand on his shoulder, Twilight guides him close as they follow the heroes at last.
Link just wasn't prepared for when he's spat out the other end…
Featuring: the fit I had Link in for awhile cause it matches surprisingly well. Fierce Deity boots, Soldiers Armor, Sheikah Headgear, all with the same navy/dark brown/yellow ochre/red highlight palette! Also has good utility with the attack, sneak, and defense combo.
Shame I’m not a big fan of the dying mechanic in the game. Who decided the sash for the green Hylian tunic would be eggplant purple? The secondary and tertiary colors are all over the place! Also we don’t even get multiple greens to dye with… rip
∆ A brother in need of a few speeches, the captain finally understands where Link stands in his oath.

“He spoke of a lady, a woman perhaps. He called out to her as if she was greeting him from far away.”
"And … What was this name?"
“...Mipha."
Zelda recoils back slightly from Time once he spoke. Her eyes grew sad and almost guilty as the name rings in her mind. Time shared a look of worry as he passed Link’s tunic to Legend who ambles around for a sewing needle and thread. The vet was always fixing their clothes it seems and he didn't mind, it meant he got some alone time.
" Mipha … was the Zora princess, first born to King Dorephan. I…believe the two of them shared a …deeper connection with each other.” Zelda speaks slow and steady as she brushes Link’s blond hair from his face. The hero lays in the bed again, his hip and gut wrapped with bandages after Hyrule and the fairy was able to heal most of the damage.
" I see.” Time whispers, looking down for a moment to give the two peace. The way Link had called for her made Time’s heart wrench against his ribs. It sounded like -
“We'll leave him to rest and perhaps I'll send Twilight up if that is okay?"
“Of course."
Zelda doesn't look at Time but he knows there was something else on the edge of her tongue. Perhaps gratitude. Perhaps not. For now, it wasn't his place to question the princess' words not her mind. It was clear Link was hiding something else underneath that tough stoic character that made the group look up at in both awe and horror.
Warriors' himself had even questioned the loyalty Link invokes, the persona of 'i have to be greater than my enemy' and even the captain knew how much of a roll that would take on a person. The captain has twiddled his thumbs long enough, he wanted answers and he wanted to find what made Link tick especially on the battle field. Right now, he won't get his answers.
"It isn't the first time he pulled something so reckless." Zelda murmurs as she threads her fingers along Link's blond hair, the texture should be soft but she feels nothing but straw. He should've been taking care of himself too but alas, Link never truly thought of himself first.
Twilight had appeared moments ago, almost knocking into the wooden frames of the house in fretful jerks. The shapeshifter has been told and dropped most of his work out in the pumpkin patches, making a beeline for the cub laying in the bed once more all bloody and pale.
"Guardian attack?" He mutters, perching at the edge of the low bed, hesitant to touch the hero who sleeps fitfully. Zelda nods, the air around her glum.
"Tell me more about your journey, this one you and the others are on. Please?"
Twilight gives a confused gaze at the princess. "Why now all of a sudden?"
"I believe it may do Link some good to hear it as well. Even like this … I feel as though he needs a new purpose."
So Twilight sits and he speaks and acknowledges the way Zelda inhales all the information he can provide. Details like the Shadow are left vague enough. Their recent travels from around the eras of Hyrule, even to the beginnings of SkyLoft itself. The way the princess is able to soak it all up makes him pause, Zelda is a direct blood descendant to Hylia herself but still, it gave him a little shock. Zelda didn't know all of course not but she did manage to ask the right questions.
"If the goddess truely is bringing you all together, then one day soon, my Link will join you on your adventure. Correct?"
Twilight stared for a good long moment before he dips his head down in agreement. They all would follow, all nine of them now. Perhaps there was a tenth but he wasn't so sure.
"We believe the goddess is opening the portals in time to gather us, one may open soon or not and we would follow each other inside. We never know what is to be seen once we step through. Some open randomly, separating us."
"What makes you go to the portal?" Zelda then asks making Twilight once again be stumped at an answer. He wasn't sure. But it was a pull of familiarity. Like a red string of fate leading him and the others onwards. A calling to the unknown.
"We don't truely understand it but it is simply.. we can't ignore it nor try to avoid it. Like Hylia herself is guiding us with a push of her hand." He finally replies when Link stirs on his bed and cracks his eyes open wide.
With a weak groan, Link squints at the ceiling and tries to lift himself upwards only for Zelda to press him down again with a firm hand. The command was clear; rest.
"I'm fine -"
"You almost died." Zelda says with a hard gaze that pierced his soul.
"…Again?" Link murmurs with a hint of sarcasm dripping from his tongue that even Twilight finds annoying. Now wasn't the time to joke or be amused about ones own reckless choices.
"I'm fine, Mipha got me like usual." He mumbles to himself, flexing his wrists and shoulders and trying to stretch only to wince and clutch his wounded gut.
"Time found you, 'rulie had to coax your guts back together - who's Mipha?" Twilight corrects his descendant, a tone in his voice makes Link wince again.
"…Mipha was unable to heal you, Link. It is as I thought, their spirits are no longer tied to you. Their quest is over, as is yours. There is no need for them to linger." Zelda's voice wavers slightly as she speaks of their lost friends but ever since returning to land of the living and breathing the air again, she's noticed the Divine beasts have lost their ethereal glow. Her friends have passed on, along with her father at last.
Link doesn't seem to grasp such concepts, his face turns a shade of red and his eyes unfocus slightly as if thinking too hard . His bottom lip wobbles making Twilight's gut wrench in guilt for the sadness wafting off the young hero.
"…She's gone? Properly?" He whispers back. Zelda bows her head slightly before inhaling deeply.
"I believe when you defeated Ganon, they all took to the other side. I still believe she is looking down upon you Link, I'm sure."
Link turns his face into the low pillow, turning away from them and Twilight clenched his jaw as he notices his pup in such a state of rejection, of denial. He's seen this before, and it hits a little too personal.
He moves slowly, reaching to grasp Link's arm and then up to his chin to make him look at him. Their eyes meet and he sees himself in those bright azure eyes full of unshed tears and a mirror into his own pain.
"Denial is never the way forwards. Accepting what has happened and holding her in your heart is the least you can do. Honour her memories, cherish her smile and her wit. Remember her for as she was when you met and loved, I am certain if she was anything like…" he swallows, the lump pushes into his throat hard as the shining beauty of her comes to his mind. "Then she loved you too, and she didn't need to say it."
The movement of time changes that evening as Twilight's words dance in Link's mind over and over and over till he works up the strength to cry once he's left alone again. His wound aches but the gaping void in his soul makes everything feel deeper. More raw. Lethal. He lslt his memory of her and now he's sobbing into his hands over the fact that they would never be what she wanted them to be. Lovers. Engaged, complete, hand in hand, potentially ruling together. It was all gone. The 'what ifs' were hopes that are shattered across the floor and Link is left with simple dreams of their would be's. It was gone like a fire storm, swept up into the blaze of licking flames that even the ash wasn't safe. It burned like the rest of the forest of his love that never got the chance to bloom.
At some point, he meandered down the steps, eyes swollen and bloodshot with his hand clutched at his side. His slate was gone, he spots it on a table and makes a beeline towards it slowly. The usual blip noise sounds and he sighs at the feeling of the ancient texture against his fingers. He locates his elixirs and downs a hearty one in one gulp, wiping his lip with his sleeve and sighing. The taste is always awful but the sensation of energy returning to his muscles and the stitching feeling in his gut tells him he needed the extra healing. Shame the elixir cannot heal his grief.
"Ah, there you are soldier."
The captain's voice breaks Link's train of thought, a heavy hand placed on his shoulders and he tilts his head.
"Still on your feet, that's good. Join me?" Warriors asks with a kindness that stirs something familiar in the depths of his mind. Link nods, placing down the empty vial and his slate before following the captain to a table where two mugs of fresh steaming tea had been brewed.
"Nifty thing that slate. Zelda was eager to explain to us how it worked, even showed us a few life like images there from your journey. Your Hyrule is gorgeous from what I've seen myself however …"
Link sits with a wince, seeing Warriors grasp his mug and blow the surface.
"You're wondering about the garrisons?" Link finishes and brings his own mug to his lips.
"I suppose I am. Zelda tells me you are her appointed knight …you're higher rank than me," Warriors chuckles but it's a life forced. Link can tell there's something else shimmering under the surface of the words being spoken and he's trying to pick them out.
"Mhm, I got knighted at sixteen. Though, from what Zelda …tells me, I can from a family of knights. My father …was a royal knight himself. I don't remember him…"
There's a lull in conversation for a moment before Warriors smiles slightly.
"Nothing wrong coming from a line of knighthood. Though…to be appointed at that age I wouldn't put it on anyone. The training and the captain's and …everything is a lot regardless. What matters is your oath, I saw when we first met that you were serious about protecting the princess and I commend you for that. Doing your duty is noble, I'm sure the king was pleased."
Link scoffs slightly at the mention of king Rhoam and shakes his head.
"The king kept me close to her but in the begining Zelda hated me."
" Hate is a strong word-"
"No, it was obvious. I remember Urbosa telling Revali something about how I reminded her of her failure to awaken her powers. I think that's what was said anyway."
Warriors frowns and sets his mug on the table softly, adjusting his blue scarf that Link personally thinks fits the captain's persona well.
"We all make crass judgements during our life. It seems now, that hatred is turned to something else." He comments, swishing his mug to move the tea slightly before downing it .
"I'd follow her anywhere, I made a promise and I intend to keep it."
"Good. Then I know where you and I stand now."
Link meets Warriors' gaze once more and there staring back at him is the sight of golden approval. He's seen it before, in a dream or two, standing before a figure looking down at him with awe and praise and yet there was underlying unspoken words to be said. It was the sight of a father praising his son for a first kill in the woods, the first fish to be caught, the first time he makes effort to do well for the family. The brewing of memories shimmer in his mind but Link focuses hard to stare back at Warriors who finishes his tea and leans back on his cushion.
"Which is?" He asks anyway, lifting his mug and drinking his own tea in short gulps.
You better believe I’ve got more ideas incoming, and they are sad.
If you thought career councilor Wars was bad, new dad to a teenager is much worse. He needs to know everything. Wild is very weirded out. Even when he finds out Warriors is his dad he's still distant. He doesn't remember having a dad and Warriors is too young to be his parent anyways. Both wish their relationship was as natural as Time and Twilight's. (Bit of a grass is always greener situation, those two are awkward as well.)
Now let's fast-forward to Warriors post quest. He's settled down and little baby Wild is on his way. Warriors thinks he's so ready. Sure the baby care will take some practice but he knows the young man his son will become. This will be easy-peasy. And he's had plenty of time to plan how he'll change the future. Who care's about the timeline, Time messed it up first anyways.
Then he's holding a little squalling Wild for the first time and he realizes how unprepared he really is. He’s desperate now and starts throwing himself into more planning with Athena (that’s what I call Warriors’ Zelda) He needs to be ready for the calamity so Wild doesn’t have to be.
When his daughter is born Warriors is delighted. Wild never mentioned a daughter, maybe this is a sign it’s working. He has two beautiful children. He’s actually prepared for kid number two, unlike the first one that he was just lying to himself about 🤣
Then Athena dies and his greatest ally is gone. King Rhoam is preparing for the calamity as well but they have different ideas about what to focus on. Rhoam thinks the hero is more useful in the field fighting monsters, doesn't care much for his strategies. Warriors is so busy these days he has no choice but to leave the raising of his children to castle staff and knights.
One day he returns from a mission and another knight stops him to give him the news. They took Wild out of the castle for some training. He wandered off and was missing for a few hours. "But he's ok we promise, better than ok! Your 12 year old son has found the master sword! The king already knighted him. Sorry you missed out. We'll have a more formal ceremony now that you are back. Tell the whole kingdom we have a hero again."
Warriors is ready to give up then and there. All his planning, all the fighting he's done, it was to protect Wild and it hasn't made a difference. Warriors goes to see his son to reassure him and tell him how proud he is even though that's the last thing he wants to do. Meeting and talking with his son, Warriors can see how nervous and scared he is. It's enough for Warriors to pull himself together and throw himself back into the fight.
Now Warriors is gone even more and even longer. He doesn't know what else to do. If he can fight and defeat the calamity before it even awakens he can save Wild. What few times he does see his son Warriors can feel the bright young man he once knew slipping away.
Well if he can't protect his son he'll prepare him. When Warriors is home they spar and spar and spar. Wars doesn't have much influence on the princess but he suggests new places to pray. He encourages both of their interests in ancient technology. Helps pick out candidates for divine beast pilots.
When the calamity does come Warriors isn't at the castle. He tries to get back but get's stopped at Fort Hetano. He takes command of the garrison there and they hold the line. After days of fighting and no word from his son a miracle happens. The princess and her knight are fighting their way through Blathory plain. A bright light envelops the battlefield and all the guardians deactivate. The princess has done it.
It takes some time to clear the dead guardians away from the gate but when they do Warriors is the first out the gate. He needs to see his son. The princess is tearfully making her way to the fort, alone. "Sir Link was too hurt. I had to send him to the shrine of resurrection."
Warriors falls to his knees in despair. He didn't even get to say goodbye.
