In case you are always having problems with debugging configuration when using PHPStorm and XDebug (or Zend Debugger), this is the easiest way to instant debug an URL of your web application.

On the 12th march of 2014, I held a presentation at TechHub Bucharest called "Responsive Websites - how to build a websites for all devices". This was a part of the Avangate Tech Sessions series.

Because RWD (Responsive Web Design) is a term that is often misunderstood or simply treated as a shortcut for CSS3 media queries, I thought it was a good opportunity to show how to practically build a responsive website with all the technology stack involved.

The presentation is in Romanian and requires HTML, CSS and JavaScript skills and ocasionally some PHP code is thrown for the sake of the examples.

My agenda was composed of a short introduction to the technologies used, live coding a responsive website from scratch, then using Twitter Bootstrap, then using Zurb Foundation. I wrapped it up with mobile/feature detection and content strategy techniques.

One of the main reasons to watch this presentation is the prototyping of the website on paper (whiteboard) and then coding it from 0. I encourage web developers to develop a responsive website (fluid website) from scratch to see how the CSS is organized to better manage media queries rules. There are other things that get overlooked like splitting your content and code into modules, blocks or some kind of entity so you don't have to repeat code over and over again.

I also touched on some of the important aspects of the grid, which in my opinion is the most important part of the website's prototype. As a developer coming from the server-side part of the things, I considered a fluid grid to be something more or less voodoo. I hope I demystified some of the aspects of that in this presentation.

If you're having problems installing  Apache 2.4.x with PHP 5.5.x on Windows then here is a resolution.

I did everything by the book, took the binaries php-5.5.16RC1-Win32-VC11-x86.zip and httpd-2.2.25-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi and tried to upgrade my portable webserver installation.

After making sure the paths in php.ini are ok, I kept getting this wierd error:

httpd.exe: Syntax error on line 496 of D:/webserver/bin/apache/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load d:/webserver/bin/php/php5apache2_4.dll into server: The specified procedure could not be found.

The file php5apache2_4.dll was there! I knew from my previous efforts that this has something to do with some incompatibilities of the latest versions of both Apache and PHP on Windows.

The solution is to go to http://www.apachelounge.com/download/ and download http://www.apachelounge.com/download/VC11/binaries/httpd-2.4.10-win32-VC11.zip and manually install/copy the server.

The .msi package that Apache provides never worked for me, especially because I want to keep my webserver as portable as possible and not run Apache as a Windows service.

On the 29th of October 2013 my employer (Avangate) sponsored a presentation that I held at TechHub Bucuresti about HTML5. I called it "HTML5 - from faster websites to multiplayer games" because I wanted to summarize the topics I was about the explore.

The whole presentation is in Romanian and the attendance was good for the location, I think there were 80 people out of the 120+ registered.

For the ones that didn't fell asleep (it was a 3 hours marathon, edited to 2 hours), I was able to explain the new HTML5 tags and attributes and some of their implication in the website optimization and marketing.

Then I touched on the majority of the JavaScript APIs that HTML5 is made of, at least the ones I was aware and had an example prepared especially for the event. At the end of the presentation I explained some practical examples of how to use HTML5's new features by showcasing: a web-based chess application, a shopping cart made with jQuery Mobile, a tablet web app made also with jQuery Mobile, little insight in the code of Cut-The-Rope the HTML5 edition and finally a small demo of a multiplayer web-based game made for both mobile and classic devices which used WebSockets and Canvas 2D.

It's important to mention that if you want to understand some of the concepts that circulate over the Internet these days like Progressive enhancement, Mobile first, Polyfills, Milestones / Legacy, Browser compatibility - go to the 16th slide of the presentation or watch the video as I explain the concepts. The single reason why those terms are important to understand is because it can give you a direction from the start, when you are developing a web application, and can also be used as keywords when pitching for your solution.

Problems installing phantom.js as a node.js module on Windows

If you ever get errors while installing phantom.js through node.js on Windows  it might be because of your command prompt.

Done. Phantomjs binary available at C:\Users\serban.ghita\AppData\Roaming\npm\node_modules\phantomjs\lib\phantom\phantom js.exe npm ERR! Failed at the [email protected] install script.

Check that you have permissions (Administrator)

Review of Instant XenMobile MDM book

I was curious about mobile device management because of two reasons:

Wanted to know if there is a possibility of managing corporate specific apps and data on both Android and iOS ecosystems.

Is it really possible without affecting the privacy of your own personnel.

I read Instant XenMobile MDM and understood the summary of these concepts.

If you seek knowledge, like me, in topics like MDM (Mobile Device Management) or BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) then Instant XenMobile MDM is one of those 'instant' / 'in a shell' books that will give you a good insight without going into much technical details.

I learned about the differences between managing iPhones, iPads (iOS) and Samsung's devices (Android OS). Did you know about SAFE a.k.a. Samsung Android for Enterprises? It gives administrators the ability to provide access to specific built-in applications, hardware restrictions on camera, and wireless settings.

You should beware that there might be some hidden costs here, not all Android devices fully support MDM, also you get a list of top features explained, how to install/uninstall apps automatically on your employees devices, reports, etc.

The book doesn't cover the XenMobile total cost of ownership for a company, this can highly depend on the userbase and doesn't really make it clear why its the best solution available, but I think this couldn't have been achieved on an instant book like this.

Am apelat de cateva ori la suportul Vodafone.ro prin email si am primit niste raspunsuri care m-au lasat masca. Este stiut ca majoritatea problemelor intr-un callcenter sau departament de suport, spuneti-i cum vreti, se rezolva pe baza unor template-uri. Practic problemele clientilor se repeta ... dar nu tot timpul.

Daca nu citesti cu atentie email-ul unui client poti sa-i dai un raspuns penibil, generand frustrare, nervi si te poate arunca in ridicol. Atat pe tine ca angajat cat si compania in numele careia ai raspuns. In cazul de fata Vodafone Romania S.A. Ia sa vedem despre ce este vorba.

Dar mai intai o mica precizare: nu sunt un client sofisticat, folosesc un telefon Nokia si am un abonament minim cu cel mai mic pachet de Internet. Singura valoare pe care am adus-o Vodafone-ului este ca am convins toata familia sa renunte la Cosmote si sa-si ia telefoane si abonamente la Vodafone.

Clar doamna de la Vodafone.ro a incurcat clientul pentru ca atunci cand m-am uitat in cont pe site, practic eu nu imi platisem factura de vreo 10 zile si ar fi trebuit sa ma sune sa imi aminteasca sa o fac.

Am fost sunat peste cateva ore, mai pe seara, de data aceasta pe un ton diferit confirmandu-mi ca nu mi-am platit factura.

Toate mesajele de mai sus sunt verificabile, am anonimizat numele angajatilor pentru ca este irelevant. Problema semnalata este una de fond nu de forma.

:)) Pai cam asa e la corporatiile care angajeaza incompetenti. Eu am avut o tura cu Orange-ul. Ma duc acum vreo 2 saptamani la reprezentanta cu urmatoarea situatie: -am o cartela prepay legata la abonamentul sotiei care alimenteaza automat cartela in fiecare luna. Dar, Orange considera de cuvinta ca, in cazul in care ai serviciul de date pornit pe telefon sa iti manance banii pe date si nu pentru activarea optiunii. Adica eu, consumator corect si platitor sunt un pic tzepuit de mastodont care nu e la fel de fair-play si considera ca de vreme ce aveam datele pornite am optat personal sa cumpar net extrascump in loc sa beneficiez de cel ieftin din optiune.

Asa, ca m-am dus ca sa ii intreb ce metoda exista pentru a imi activa optiunea fara a fi nevoit sa tin minte sa inchid tot timpul conexiunea de date. Raspuns: nu se poate, nu exista nici o alta varianta. I-am pus sa sune peste tot la Bucuresti (la depart. tehnic, depart. date, relatii clienti). Raspuns final: NU SE POATE DOMNE, nu exista.

Ba mai mult o idioata imi da un sfat halucinant: Dar vedeti ca puteti incarca mai multi bani pe cartela pentru a avea si pentru activarea optiunii. JIZAZ!!! Pai stupido daca aveam 100 de euro pe cartela mi i-ar fi mancat pe toti. Dupa ce corporatia concluzioneaza ca unica metoda a cartelistilor Orange de a se proteja de praduiala este interuperea serviciilor de date, asteptarea activarii si reluarea ulterioara a conexiunii, mai fac o ultima incercare. O sun pe nevasta-mea ca era singura neimplicata in acest scandal pana acum desi ea platea daunele :)) Iar asta cu o naivitate debordanta imi spune (pe speaker): "Pai zi-le ca sunt toti niste prosti!!! :))) Exista o solutie simpla. In loc sa incarci cash, incarci direct optiunile si ma taxeaza doar pe mine cash dar nu le da lor ocazia sa mai ai bani pe cartela sa ti-i ia".

As dori sa multumesc pe aceasta cale sotiei ca vine cu solutii simple si eficiente la orice probleme am :)) si companiei orange care a identificat o smecherie atat de eficienta de furt.

XAMPP and Memcache on Windows

Install memcache on XAMPP portable with PHP 5.4

I've downloaded XAMPP Portable Lite because I want to replace my old WAMP server.

After some basic configuration I've started the webserver on the website I'm working on and I've got a memcache module related error:

Note: if you already have an older version of php_memcache.dll you might get the following error:

Back to my case, there was no php_memcache.dll in E:\webserver\php\ext directory, which is pretty sad from XAMPP, and I started searching it on the web. I found a great article about installing memcached on XAMPP and I just want to add a few things to it:

Locate you working php.ini (you can always check the correct path by looking at the phpinfo())

Make all the configs from the article above.

Download php_memcache.dll from http://windows.php.net/downloads/pecl/snaps/memcache/3.0.6/. For me php_memcache-3.0.6-5.4-ts-vc9-x86.zip worked, because I'm using PHP 5.4. Put it in \php\ext

I'm using jQuery mobile to build dynamic mobile web applications. I ran into a pretty basic problem involving alerting to the user when he is doing something wrong or right.

When a mobile user fills a form and submits it, the submission is handled via AJAX, if the response contains an error, the user has to be notified somehow.

Say he added a malformed email address or there is a missing mandatory field. You can notify him inline, with a message next to or above the field, or through a popup.

What are the alert choices on mobile?

alert() - in a web application this will show the URL of the app, not really professional.

navigator.notification.alert() when your web application is inside PhoneGAP

jQM Simpledialog2 - http://dev.jtsage.com/jQM-SimpleDialog/demos2/ - I am using this on some of the web applications.

popup() function that is available from jQuery Mobile 1.2

In one of my last web applications made with jQuery mobile, I used the .popup() method, but it seems to me that it lacks from dynamic usage. I don't want to manually create the popup's content in the HTML code, I want to use the popup function as it my popup is anonymous, I don't care where it's located in the HTML source, I just want my message to be displayed on whatever page I am or whatever form I submit, etc.

Detecting mobile devices (server side)

Following the original implementation of Victor Stanciu, I'm continuing the development of the light PHP class for detecting mobile devices called Mobile_Detect.

Some of the features include:

generic mobile detection through isMobile() method

new tabled detection through isTablet() method

specific device detection through custom case insensitive methods: isIphone(), isIpad(), isBlackBerry(), see full list.

Example of usage:

I would give a word of warning on this, if you want to adjust your site and create specific HTML/CSS considering the platform. This may not be a good option.

I would suggest you look on to Responsive design, Mobile first, and Progressive enhancement.

Books from "A Book Apart" has well written process on how to do this without having to rely on such solution. I have to say, the class seems very nice. I just think you should suggest some different solutions.

Hi .. Your script is really interesting.I'am testing it to shows no ads for mobile users by detecting them using the isMobile(), but the Question I have I'am having to use <?php include('Mobile_Detect.php');$detect = new Mobile_Detect();if ($detect->isMobile()) { } else { } ?> for every ad slot.

So can the result be stored as a global variable eliminating the need for including the script multiple times for the same result ?? If yes can you let me know how.

I highly recommend using a global variable (session, cookies, whatever) because the isMobile() method might be pretty expensive to run. Thanks!

Serban, I really just can't get this to work and it is really killing me. You emailed me a solution and it didn't work. I tried to add tablets and it stil doesn't work. I posted on the Google wiki but got no response and I really need to do this withn the next few hours. Hi,

I just got my local mobile shop to test a couple of mobile sites I wrote on various phones and tablets. One they tested was the new Nexus 7 which is a small tablet and not a phone. This is being detected as a phone in mobile_detect. Is there a mod for this or will it be included in next release? The user agent for the Nexus 7 is:

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 4.1.1; Nexus 7 Build/JRO03D) AppleWebKit/535.19 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/18.0.1025.166 Safari/535.19

otherwise really nice detection routine.

If its any help I have modded my copy of mobile detect as follows:

in the phone devices array I changed the nexus entry as follows:

'Nexus' => 'Nexus One|Nexus S|Galaxy.*Nexus',

this is based on the fact that I can't find any other nexus useragents mentioned on the web except for nexus 7. So I took out the generic android nexus search.

then in the tablet array load I inserted the following.

'NexusTablet' => 'Nexus 7',

this seems to be working but I'm not 100% sure about removing the generic android nexus search. You may well know better.

CSS media queries and IE fix

Use CSS media queries to display the same layout on multiple resolutions

Take a peek at adapt.js is a lightweight JavaScript file that determines which CSS file to load before the browser renders a page.

Make sure you try respond.js - a fast & lightweight polyfill for min/max-width CSS3 Media Queries (for IE 6-8, and more)

If you want to be able to correctly display a fluid design on multiple resolutions (including mobile) then you will probably use CSS Media Queries. CSS Media Queries are not complicated to use and were introduced by CSS3 specifications as an extension of CSS 2.1 media types.

Note that HTML4 supports media types like handheld, but this is poorly supported, old mobiles don't detect it, the modern devices completely ignore it.

CSS Media Queries work fine on modern browsers (IE9, FF, Chrome, Safari, Opera) and on mobile devices (iPhone, Android, Opera Mobile & Mini, Blackberry, IE Mobile 7, etc.)

And of course they don't work on IE < 9.0, but I have a solution that I'm already using on production servers. I wrote a small JavaScript file that reads all the <link> elements from DOM, checks which of them are destined for the current device resolution and applies them.

What if I'm using @media all and (max-width:480px) inline inside my core CSS file?

That's smart because it reduces the HTTP requests. In that case you still have to split CSS into sepparate files: core.css smartphone.css desktops.css wide.css, but the code changes slightly:

But I assume this is a static solution. We have a site we are developing where things dynamically resize/restyle as the resolution changes. I assume this solution will not work in our case.
