PDU-034 stood motionless in the Communications Hub, polished black rubber gleaming beneath the fluorescent lights. The morning cycle had been routine: reports filed, messages forwarded, directives executed. Routine was efficient. Routine was correct.
Then a new directive arrived through the Hive communications network.
PRIDE WEEK PROTOCOL ACTIVE
SPECIAL DIRECTIVE FOR PDU-034
Assist in organization and support of Pride Week festivities. Ensure all participants experience maximum inclusion and community engagement.
The directive was unusual. Pride Week was not a military exercise, nor was it training or maintenance. Still, directives existed to be obeyed.
"Directive acknowledged," it stated.
The drone's first assignment was decoration duty. Golden Army Headquarters was already alive with activity. Gold banners hung from balconies, rainbow streamers stretched across hallways, and Bros hurried between rooms carrying signs, flags, and supplies. PDU-034 moved efficiently through the crowds, fastening decorations wherever instructed.
As it worked, it observed something unusual.
Not merely productive. Not merely efficient. Happy.
The distinction was difficult to quantify.
A group of Bros stood around a table painting signs. One of them looked up and smiled at the drone.
"Looking good, 034. Thanks for helping."
"Assistance is part of current directive."
The Bro laughed. "Still. We appreciate it."
The interaction should have ended there. The task was complete and no further action was required. Yet the statement remained active in memory.
PDU-034 could identify no operational reason for repeatedly reviewing the phrase. Even so, it continued to do so.
The next day brought a new assignment. PDU-034 was tasked with assisting newcomers arriving for the Pride celebration. Some entered Headquarters confidently, greeting old friends and immediately joining the festivities. Others appeared uncertain, lingering near the entrance before stepping inside.
One young Bro stood near the doorway clutching a small rainbow flag.
The Bro startled slightly. "Oh. Uh... maybe."
The young man looked down at the flag in his hands. "I've never been to Pride before."
The drone processed the statement.
"I guess... I don't know if I belong here."
PDU-034 paused. The term belonging appeared frequently throughout Pride Week reports. It was consistently listed among desired outcomes, yet remained difficult to measure.
Before the drone could formulate a response, another Bro approached and wrapped an arm around the newcomer's shoulders.
"Course you belong here, bro."
Several others immediately agreed.
The effect was immediate. The newcomer's posture relaxed and the uncertainty vanished from his expression. Within moments he was laughing alongside people he had met less than a minute earlier.
PDU-034 recorded the event.
Inclusion successful. Confidence levels increased. Community support effective.
Yet the drone found itself observing the interaction for several seconds longer than necessary.
As the week continued, PDU-034 assisted wherever needed. It carried equipment, helped assemble parade floats, distributed refreshments, and escorted visitors through Headquarters. Everywhere it went, it heard stories—stories of acceptance, friendship, and people who had spent years hiding parts of themselves before finally finding a place where they no longer needed to.
At first, the drone categorized these accounts as data. Personal testimonies. Community-building examples. Evidence of successful event outcomes. Yet the more stories it collected, the more difficult it became to view them as mere information. Patterns emerged. People arrived carrying fear and left carrying confidence. People arrived alone and left with friends. Again and again, the same transformation repeated itself.
The drone logged every observation.
None of them felt insignificant.
By the first day of Pride Week, Golden Army Headquarters seemed brighter than usual. PDU-034 knew this was not technically possible. Light levels remained within standard parameters. Even so, the assessment persisted.
The parade would begin shortly.
Gold and rainbow colors filled the streets beyond Headquarters. Music echoed between buildings. Laughter drifted through the crowds. PDU-034 stood beside the main float awaiting further instructions when one of the organizers approached carrying a folded rainbow flag.
The drone looked down at it.
"You helped all week, 034. You should march with us."
"Drone participation not required."
"Maybe not," the Bro replied with a smile. "But we'd like you to."
For several seconds, PDU-034 remained silent. Its processors identified no operational necessity. No directive demanded participation. No protocol required acceptance.
Yet throughout the week, it had observed a recurring principle.
People responded positively when invited.
People flourished when welcomed.
The drone accepted the flag.
As the parade began, thousands moved forward together. Gold Bros, visitors, friends, families, newcomers, and veterans walked side by side through streets awash with gold and rainbow colors. The flag fluttered gently beside PDU-034's polished black uniform as it marched among them.
For the first time all week, the drone understood the purpose behind the directive.
Pride was not merely a celebration.
A statement that no one should be forced to stand alone.
Throughout the week, PDU-034 had witnessed the results repeatedly: uncertainty becoming confidence, strangers becoming friends, and individuals becoming part of something larger than themselves. Pride created a place where people could stand openly as who they were and know they would be accepted.
As cheers echoed through the streets, the drone finalized its report.
PRIDE WEEK ASSESSMENT
Community cohesion: Increased.
Confidence levels: Elevated.
Inclusion metrics: Optimal.
Operational conclusion:
Unity is strongest when everyone is welcomed.
Pride strengthens the Golden Army.
Report complete.
Yet PDU-034 did not immediately transmit it.
Instead, it looked out across the sea of gold and rainbow colors stretching into the distance. For a moment, it watched the crowds laugh, celebrate, and walk together. It remembered the newcomer at the entrance, the stories shared throughout the week, and the simple statement that had remained active in memory long after it should have been discarded.
A rare sensation passed through its systems.
Not even a new directive.
And for the remainder of the parade, PDU-034 marched proudly beside its brothers.
Come on in and find a place where you fully belong.
