Hot take: I think we should normalize the practice of headcovering.
Hear me out.
I say this because I want it to stop being seen as weird. Or strictly even a solely religious practice. I want people to stop getting funny looks or xenophobic comments and stares in stores or when existing in public for wearing headcoverings. I want people to feel like they can wear a kippah or a mitpachat or a hijab or other styles of headcoverings in public without getting harrassment from xenophobic mediocre middle aged white guys with inferiority complexes for wearing them.
So - if you've been idly toying with the idea of buying a couple of scarves because you saw the pretty styles a random jewish lady was rocking online, or you liked the way a hijabi styled her scarf with her outfit for a party on tiktok and thought "I wanna try that, that looks cute", guess what - from a random middle-aged Jewish lady on the internet, here's your permission to go on Wrapunzel or Amazon or to the clearance rack at tjmaxx, and find a few cute scarves, buy them, and experiment with wearing them.
Because here's the thing. You can do it and it's not appropriative to do so. In fact, not only can you wear scarves like that (even the tichel styles!), if you ask a lot of ladies who cover their hair part or full time for religious (or non religious) reasons, a lot of us would really just be thrilled if you wanted to wear them. lol. Like there's outliers, sure, but largely the people I know who cover their hair are just as likely to welcome you to your newest shopping habit as I am.
Nearly every culture at some point had some sort of headcovering practice for modesty or religious reasons, or both, in it's history. So nobody really can lay claim to a monopoly on the practice of tying a piece of fabric around your head.
I've been an on again, off again wearer of tichels for a while now (I have alopecia and sometimes I also just am too lazy to deal with my hair but mostly I find the practice spiritually engaging and a signal to others that I am happily taken, thanks!). In the time I've worn scarves, I've gotten tons of compliments - and also, a fair amount of hateful or scathing comments from people for wearing them. (I expect it, I live in a small midwestern town where we are likely the only Jews for... dozens of miles in any direction). But I feel like the more I wear them, the more people get used to it, and the less likely they are to be jerks and harass someone who is super religious. And that thought outweighs any of the crap I occasionally take from ignorant rednecks over it.
Today in trying to stop being 'Schrödinger's Canadian', I finally got AOR (two months after submitting my application).
Basically AOR is the fancy email document you get from the IRCC once they decide they're gonna look at your application instead of rejecting it.
Now I get to wait anywhere from 6 months to a year to get an approval or denial. Yay.
Jewish folks do not owe you, an internet stranger, a discussion of their political beliefs nor their feelings on Zionism.
Let's say it louder for the folks in the back:
Jews DO NOT owe you an explanation of their views on their religious homeland or the complex geopolitics of a place they've continued to be tied to for more than 3000 years by culture, religion, and ethnicity.
We are in fact allowed to hold a variety of views. And can hold multiple truths to be true all at once.

So far online right now it's a giant pit of voles, whining that NG didn't write their headcanon into existence, how 'their' character(s) wouldn't have done that, and I guess some idiots threatened the director on X.
I just fucking can't with any of it. I'm so disgusted with people's complaining and whining, like - they could have left the project totally unfinished. Sorry the author didn't magically write your headcanon into canon, but tough shit. Get over yourselves and grow up. You don't always get what you want.
I haven't interacted with this fandom in a while and I don't think I'll be coming back to it after this. I still love the series and I still love the characters, but the people in this fandom are so divorced from reality at times that they honestly seem really delusional and obsessive. And judging from commentary I've seen on reddit and elsewhere, I'm not being successfully convinced that is not the case.
my hot take is i love when shabbat starts later in the evening. my procastinating ass is NOT ready for those fucking 4:30 PM candlelighting weeks in winter. even 6 or 7 is pretty hard. but summer giving me until like 8:30 or 9? NOW we're talking. challah *will* be coming out of the oven ten minutes before candlelighting, thank you very much.
I am at the point where I'm just waiting for the last document to come in the mail so I can send my application and wait for Canada to process my citizenship application.

Also, side note - geneaology is kind of hard. lol. Also neat, if you're into history. And expensive if you want to back stuff up with documentation.
Through it was cool to figure out where my dad's family is from and why my great grandparents actually moved here though. My grandparents never talked about their families much. My grandma still barely talks about hers... but I expect it's probably hard to reminisce about people who have been gone a long time now. She's the only one of her siblings left, and she's 91.
Anyway. This has been kinda neat and I'm eligible to work and live in Canada once they approve my application, so that's cool. Opens up the possibilities for grad school.
Got the confirmation email from the county clerk, so the only two documents I am missing are great grandma's birth certificate, and dad's. I can technically proceed with my application with neither of these, but, it won't hurt me to have them. So now I wait for grandpa's birth certificate, great grandma's birth certificate (or evidence it doesn't exist), and my dad's birth certificate (which shouldn't be hard to get given that he said he'd give it to me).
One particularly frustrating aspect of hunting for family history and documents has been my grandparent's pervasive belief in my paternal great grandmother's family being first nations or métis.
I know, especially for Americans, it's common for families to believe the whole 'Cherokee Indian princess' ancestry myth, but it is also unbelievably obnoxious and pervasive.
One reason I was struggling with grandma about getting my grandfather's vital records is that she said she was talking to someone about getting proof of native ancestry and I was like "there is no proof of any native ancestry in any branch of either your or grandpa's family history- they are all German immigrants or descended from them."
It took me showing her the documents I've gathered from doing a metric ton of research over many weeks and months for a school project before I could get her to be sort of receptive to the fact that there is nothing.
I want white folks to stop parroting this crap and actually sit down and do the research on their family history and actually own their historical roots and stop perpetuating this shit. It does a huge disservice to them (I will admit to automatically dismisssing white-looking people out of hand when they make these claims because it is so pervasive, and in the absence of proof unless they can prove otherwise I refuse to take them seriously), and is so hugely disrespectful to actual indigenous people whose families have been actually impacted by racist and genocidal policies over the last nearly 200 years.
Well - today marked a fairly important milestone in Operation "Being Not Schrodinger's Canadian". I got my grandfather's death certificate in the mail, which means I supposedly have *all* the documents I needed to request his birth records... because Michigan has really onerous requirements to prove you're someone's heir, in order to get a birth record. He died in 2013. So that's been fun. But I digress. Here's where I stand on documents: G0 - Great Grandma: Born 1911 - Pending oustanding search for birth certificate (I sent a request to Saskatchewan's vital statistics office and now I get to wait 6-8 weeks for the more than probably 80% likelihood of being told 'we can't find it anywhere' - but I need proof that I tried to obtain it and couldn't to satisfy government folks). I can't get anyone to help me find a baptismal record, plus, she was Lutheran anyway so, there likely isn't one anywhere accessible or useful.

Her marriage license (shows parents that match census, and Canadian birthplace)

Waiting on birth certificate (submitted request, hopefully county doesn't reject it for no birth certificate for my dad to link descent because all I have are marriage records due to Michigan's annoying birth records laws that list parentage for my father to link me to my grandparent) - What do I have instead? - 1940 and 1950 Census showing him in my grandparent's household. - His marriage license (showing parentage matching census records) to my grandmother (still living) - His death certificate - His obituary naming my dad as his son
G2 - Dad: born 1958 - Need to ask for his birth certificate again - Have my parent's marriage license (shows parentage)... so I can feasibly get away with not having it.
G3 - Myself - Birth Certificate - Marriage License - US passport
Once I get proof of birth records (or their non existence... or the county or my parent decides to play hardball), I'll go print off relevant stuff from the state (detailing why I can't get copies of birth records for dad or grandpa), I'll include the proof of birth cert/no record found for Great grandma, and then I'll go schedule the passport photos they want , make photo copies of everything, and fill out the paperwork for the citizenship proof, and mail it off. LOL Chasing down all this stuff and doing the genealogical research for it has been a lot - luckily my great grandparents and grandfather grew up locally, so it hasn't been too hard to locate some records other than birth records.
Y'know, being Schrödinger's Canadian has kinda sent me on a fun goose chase to understanding my family background, which is kinda neat.
However, it's equally frustrating to work around the stonewalling attempts of living relatives to obtain info I need. Like birth certificates of dead grandparents. Thanks to Michigan's privacy laws naturally I can't get my grubby mitts on birth records because... of course not. It couldn't be as easy as finding great grandma's info and to have the next two generations just provide me with photocopies of the needed paperwork.

Why can't shit just be simple? Like on paper it is extremely easy to prove that a.) great grandma was Canadian, b.) therefore so was my grandfather, c.) so is my father, and thus d.) so am I. But the paper trail is the frustratingly hard to obtain part since government records beyond death certs and marriage certificates are impossible to obtain here if the person died less than 100 years ago *and* their next of kin is alive and uncooperative or they themselves are kicking around and not playing ball because they think you want to steal their identity or commit fraud.
Like no dude I just want my "run away from trouble" option to be freely available should I find myself in a position to need to jump in a vehicle and bolt for safer ground. That 'get out of jail' card just happens to be a Canadian citizenship certificate that requires tons of official documentation to prove to the Canadian government that I'm not attempting in some way to commit fraud and obtain something I am not actively entitled to.
So yeah. Right now since I can get my hands on death certs and marriage licenses - I'm hoping those will be enough.
Well. I've officially started the process of collecting documentation to apply for canadian citizenship (I recently found out that I am eligible by descent so yay for that). Kinda nervous about collecting all the paperwork and figuring out what all documents I need but I think it will be at least more straightforward for me than I expect.
(I'm considering grad school in Canada so I want to be able to freely apply so I'm doing this way in advance to give me time to figure out my situation and where I would want to go to school if I go that route).
In case people don't realize the full extent of what's going on, we are under siege in Minnesota. I live in an affluent, majority white suburb of Minneapolis, and ICE is all over the place terrorizing people. They showed up at the library, kitted out in their Temu tactical gear, and stormed it.

They've pulled weapons on legal observers and physically attacked them. They're threatening teenagers and children with death. One woman told a story at my, again, affluent, majority white suburban town's city council meeting this week of being shoved from behind so hard that she fell down by an ICE agent, who then said to her, "Stop touching me." A man, in tears and begging for our city government to do something to help our neighbors, described having a baton pulled on him. They're luring people out of their workplaces with lies about "hitting someone's car in the parking lot" and then abducting them. Citizens and legal residents are being detained. People are being racially profiled and snatched. A teenager (a US citizen) working at Target got dragged out and shoved in a car, then dumped a mile away in a Wal-mart parking lot, beaten up and crying. And all of this is after they murdered Renee Good.
I don't emphasize the demographics of my particular suburb to say "but this shouldn't be happening here, we have money!" but to illustrate that the Trump administration has declared war on a US state. Even if you stick your head in the sand because you're white and won't be directly targeted, ICE is running traffic lights, speeding, tearing the wrong way on one way streets, and causing nasty accidents because they think they're above the law. They think it doesn't matter who they hurt or kill, because they're being told straight from the top that they can do whatever they want to whoever they want.
We are all under attack, and this is coming to a city near you if we don't stand up to it. Please stand with Minnesota, as well as LA, Portland, Chicago, and every other place DHS has sent their COD cosplay gestapo. I don't know what that looks like for you but please, please, don't ignore this.

Stop demonizing people who are prescribed these medications as if we're somehow a problem for taking it. I didn't ask to develop diabetes, and now I'm taking a medication that works to control it. Weight loss is a side bonus.
This stupid moral posturing is obnoxious and immature as hell. Not everyone taking them has an ED, people on these medications are not contributing to 'thin' being in again. It's always been in. It will always be popular to be skinny as long as current trends prevail because that is the collective aesthetic that men in particular find attractive.
It is not cheating to take a GLP-1 medication to lose weight or for any other purpose for which it is intended. It is not a moral failing to need to take these medications. It is not a position of moral superiority to not take them.
Also commentary like this also drives people toward disordered eating behaviors- not away from it. I speak from past experience.
Edit: As someone who just spent two holidays in a row being chastised by family members for being 'too thin' (despite being at a healthy weight according to my physician and all other metrics), and told "you should eat more, you're starving yourself" (despite eating normal portions of protein and the healthier items and stopping when I was satisfied), and told that my medications were gonna make me sick and die early (which they won't), accused of being anorexic (I'm not, but OK) because I go to the gym and also run regularly, and generally just being given a ton of shit because I am literally the *only* member of my family (except my 90 year old grandmother) who is not at least 40 lbs overweight?

If you're thinking of replying with some snide fucking commentary defending OP, just realize this. Their commentary contributes to stigma against people taking a *medication* for health purposes. It isn't a dietary supplement. It is a medication that is prescribed to correct metabolic issues.
Nobody gets a gold star for eating three squares a day. If you're hungry you should eat. Implying that everyone who takes these medications is starving themselves is stupid and unnecessary and contributes to demonization of helpful, effective and necessary medical treatments for disease mechanisms that cause significant long term morbidity and mortality.

Get to spend the day doing forced social interaction with family and eating food I hate for a holiday I don't celebrate or care about for the purposes of keeping the peace - all the while, I'm sure my feelings will be hurt at some point by someone being rude and dismissive, and my boundaries will get trampled on because 'it's Christmas'.
I'd rather go for a run, come back and watch Die Hard and eat Honey Garlic Chicken and work on becoming one with my couch the rest of the day.
Somehow this one day is more exhausting than an entire *month* of holiday observances. Then again... at least the high holidays don't involve a ton of family emotional baggage for me and are at least spiritually fulfilling.
