• He was willing to cut Rue off when he saw that she needed it. Delivered on that promise. Didn’t hold what she said against her when she was out of it.
• Cares for his grandmother, who needs a lot of intense care, and does so without complaining and with love.
• Loves and cares for Rue like a sister. Isn’t romantically motivated. Can have strong relationships with women without being in any way sexually motivated. That’s some good strong stuff right there.
• Has a realistic perception of his world and the people in it. Knows when things are serious and does his best to handle them as appropriately as he can. Also knows when it’s time to chill and relax. Encourages the people around him to do the same when necessary.
• Saved Rue from that terrifying drug dealer at own personal cost. Tried his best to avoid Rue being anywhere near that situation to begin with. Tbh I get the impression that he would have done the same or similar even if the person at risk wasn’t Rue, but that’s my personal interpretation.
• Isn’t afraid to call people on their shit, but doesn’t do so for fun, only when necessary and usually asked for.
• Drinks respect women juice.
Sure he isn’t the smartest character on the show, and yes he’s a drug dealer, but he respects people’s autonomy and tries to do right by people, and those lines can get blurry in his situation so at least he’s doing his best.
Euphoria, to me, is less about passing judgement on characters and more about showing context to their decisions, and showcasing how really, most people are just trying to do their best in the best way that they know how, and context dictates those decisions. Everybody’s human, nobody makes perfect decisions all of the time, but we do what we think is best given our situation. Everybody’s values and histories are different, and can affect our judgement. Everybody’s just trying their best, and nobody really knows how, and that’s life. Everybody’s human. Everybody’s trying.
