Okay maybe Iām going to sound crazy for this but finally breaking my silenceāI donāt understand whatās so silly about the āI donāt like sandā scene in attack of the clones??
Like genuinely itās so widely clowned on and I donāt understand it, I never have!
The whole thing plays out very similarly to likeā¦ you have someone from a colder windier climate (letās say upstate New York) and someone from a muggy humid climate (letās say Georgia) and the person from New York goes I love laying out in the sun when itās warm enough, and the person from Georgia is like man itās so hot and muggy where I am I stay out of the sun as much as possible, I actually really like the climate where youāre from because thereās more wind off the Great Lakes. Which is a normal conversation weāve all been through at some point.
Like guys he didnāt just out of nowhere start ranting about sand. The scene is like:
PadmƩ: We used to come here for school retreat. We would swim to that island every day. I love the water. We used to lie out on the sand and let the sun dry us and try to guess the names of the birds singing.
Anakin: I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth.
So likeā¦ theyāre on PadmĆ©ās home world, in her home climate, at a place sheās reminiscing about. PadmĆ© is like āwe loved laying in the sandā and Anakin, who is from a desert and very understandably is not enamored by the concept of laying in the sand, is like āI really donāt like sand. But this place isnāt like my memory of that, everything is so much nicer.ā He has a dislike of something thereās too much of in his home climate and is expressing appreciation for the climate heās ināsure thereās sand here at this place but it isnāt what Anakin remembers, not what he associates with sand, which is a strong association since he lived in a desert for 9 years.
And it turns into the kiss scene not because āI donāt like sandā is an attempt at flirting or a pickup line, but because while Anakin is complimenting how soft and smooth everything that comes from PadmĆ©ās home is, he looks over at something else that comes from this placeāher, who he already lovesāand her skin is as soft and smooth as the compliment he just gave her home and she looks up at him like her self control is hanging by a thread and then they kiss. This is unrelated to the sand line, more related to the continuous sexual tension between them throughout the entire movie coupled with Anakin looking at her like even though his compliment was to their surroundings, the compliment was actually meant for her, and her kinda being like screw it okay.
Every time someone calls the line āAnakinās bad flirtingā or a random rant Iām kind of like GENUINELY WHYYYš can someone please explain to me why this scene is so widely clowned on it genuinely seems SO normal to me. If you take out the way it turns into an intense shared gaze and then a kiss, itās just a space version of a conversation weāve all had with our friends from different climates at some point. āI love the windā āha itās so cold where Iām from Iām really just excited for the warmth of the sunā except with desert.
