James Potter is THAT insignificant a character. He basically exists as a narrative tool in Snape´s redemption arc and as an embelishment in Lily´s tale of motherly sacrifice (which would have been the same had she married anybody else or been a single mother)

Unpopular opinion: most snape haters hate to be called out when they say something that is not canon. Also kind of creepy how they spend all their day making up creepy headcanons over Snape like the pedo one.  They be stanning marauders and bully James and fawn all over them, even liking how they bullied him or justifying it. Gross

So, Snape punished himself for over a decade by: dedicating his life to righting a wrong he committed, subjecting himself to horrors and torture via spying on monsters, living in perpetual guilt bombarding him at every angle (he’s at fault for a friend’s death, he’s still stuck as a death eater and can never leave that past behind him), never truly allowing himself an ounce of comfort and happiness or the balm of human connection, etc. All of it with the expectation that he deserved to suffer and would never recieve forgiveness or absolution.

ALL of that, ALL of that self-imposed suffering and self-flagelation, was STILL NOT ENOUGH for the types of people that hem and haw about “redeeming villains who don’t do enough to deserve redemption.”

And I think that’s really relevant to the way people manipulate discussion for underhanded reasons in fandom discourse around these subjects. These people don’t really care about what they argue, it’s not that important a part of their sense of ethics or virtue. They do care about making others feel guilt and shame, though.

Next time you have an argument about a fave character who you want to see healed or redeemed or given space to grow, ask the person judging you how they feel about what Snape did.

Shit Things HP Characters Did When in Their 5th Year.

Ranked Evil to Ugh!.

Tom Riddle - Murdered Myrtle. Attacked his fellow students for not being ‘pure enough’. Blamed Hagrid and got him expelled.

The Marauders - Bullied students constantly. Attacked Severus Snape and dangled him upside down, choked him with soap, mocked him, and sexually assaulted him ‘because he exists’ and Sirius was bored. Never stopped bullying, just got better at hiding it.

Draco Malfoy - Spouts ‘mudblood’ on a constantly basis. Abuses his power as a Prefect. Joins Umbridge in helping to torture students. Is prejudiced against those not of pure blood or fully human.

Remus Lupin - Ignored his duties as a Prefect because he was scared his shit friends would abandon him, proving that he cannot be trusted with responsibility and proving how messed up their friendship was.

Lily Evans - Ignored her duties as a Prefect because she didn’t use the power she had to stop the Marauders from bullying others. Especially did nothing to help a (former)friend from being assaulted.

Hermione Granger - Spelled a piece of parchment to curse the complexion of anyone that broke their word after signing it.

Harry Potter - Looked into Severus’ memories without permission.

Ron Weasley & Hermione Granger - Not keep in contact with a friend who had just been traumatized and instead just listened to an old man who doesn’t legally have a right to control Harry’s life.
