How to go on an Adventure
Now that Real Life has settled again and is rather more stable (job: procured) the feeling of needing something different is creeping back in. It's less devastating than usual, not cranked up to 10, because yay finally a mental heath medication works for me. But it's there and constant, like ringing in your ears or the hum of florescent lighting in the background. I just...really want something different in my life. A new location. Horses, again. A job with rather more people to work with (there 's uh...me and one other person) to have more of a social network. An extended vacation (can't afford) or a gap-year experience like teaching abroad or paid internship or something. Just. I want something more than this. Or different. *** Comment with your adventures? Volunteering experiences?
The vibes at work the other day. It's a beautiful area to be sure.
(via ‘I Would Never Do This To You:’ Protesting Flock, Arizona Man Presents Plan to Surveil Government Officials)
On July 20, Jacob Petrosky stood in front of the Casa Grande, Arizona City Council during a public comment session and made an announcement.
“I’ve spent the last several months talking to people all over Casa Grande, and one thing keeps coming up: Safety. So, today I’m excited to announce a new company called Shepherd Safety,” he said. “Our mission is simple. Keep government officials and their families safe.” It would be no different than how the city monitors its citizens using Flock cameras, he said; he planned to launch satellites that would use AI to monitor “where government officials go, where they stop, who they meet with, and when they return home.”
He said he’d already started compiling profiles on their vehicles, spouses vehicles, children’s vehicles, and planned to combine that data with Bluetooth signals, advertising IDs, and commercial data sources, “so our authorized users can replay the movements of every government official and their immediate family,” he said. Local businesses would be invited to join the network, to “protect” officials while they shop, eat at restaurants, and move around the city.
After laying out his plan and its benefits for the government officials before him, Petrosky revealed that it was all satire. “I would never do this to you,” he said to the council members. “Could I? Probably. But I wouldn’t because it’s wrong. Just like what you guys are doing to us is wrong.”
joining the war on kids reading any book they want on the side of kids reading any book they want. simply you will be fine. it's even good to be confronted with things you don't understand and even find upsetting, uncomfortable and difficult. it's a surprise tool that will help you later.

literally ok so not a funny story but kind of funny? when I was nine I encountered rape in a book and I was like hey mom what’s this mean and she explained it and I was like oh. gross. and then like two weeks later a girl on the bus abruptly disclosed her csa and we were all like ????? what ???? but I was like wait hang on there’s a word for that ☝️🤓 and explained what it meant and that it was illegal and that you could talk to a teacher or my mom if it had happened to you and everyone was like ohhhhh I see I see and very somberly comforted the girl (she was safe she was removed from her home and living with my neighbor at the time so it wasn’t Urgent)
And this is a perfect illustration of why it is important for kids to read or variety of things, and why abusers don’t want them to.

Genealogy tracing?
Periodically I get curious. Any good sources for tracing an unknown relative? My maternal grandmother had an affair at some point, though she *never* talked about it, and my mom confirmed this well after her death with one of those rando DNA kits that proved, beyond a doubt, she was half Greek despite her mom being English/French and her mom's husband being 100% Irish. She'd always wondered, as bother her parents were very blond/blue eyed, her brothers all the same. My mom came out brown eyed, brown haired, olive-skinned...(me too). Somewhere in Small Town semi-rural Indiana, my grandmother met a 100% Greek Guy circa 1952, whilst my grandpa was away in the Korean war. It's really hard to trace that, though I've done some research about potential Greek families in the area circa the town library and Very Helpful Librarians and actually found some photos of a Greek family with some members who would've been the right age, and honestly have a striking resemblance to my mom... But. Not many Ancestry websites have a wealth of DNA from the Balkan region to compare with, so I'm left with 4th Cousins twice removed etc and some potential living relatives based on my internet sleuthing who I'm not sure how to approach...
and if i said nolan's odyssey starring no greek actors and with no recognizable aspects of greek culture or involvement by greeks, is the direct legacy of white supremacist colonialism that treated ancient greece as not just the pinnacle of ancient culture, but of an artificially created "european" culture, which white western europeans and their settler descendants, as the new pinnacle of culture, were the sole spiritual inheritors of.
^^^ PEOPLE ARE STILL THERE. There's a metro station across the street from the colosseum where i found a hair in my pizza slice. We drove by ruins of an amphitheater next to a motorway in greece once. It's literally just real places where real people live and have lived. It's not mythical perfect lands that once existed. I went to Itacha in 2023 and there was not enough parking space.
I have complicated feelings about this movie.
Side note: I have mystery Greek Roots that count for nothing because they are completely untraceable and I inherited no culture or history or relatives. (unknown but 100% Greek grandparent, courtesy of my maternal grandmother who Said Nothing About No One in Small Town Indiana while her husband was away in Korea....)
Something that gets really lost in a lot of discourse is that what we would now call 'going low-contact' or 'going no-contact' with your family used to be so completely within the normal range of familial contact that there wasn't even a term for it. Sure, in the pre-IM pre-social media days some people were calling their parents daily, but I'd wager the vast majority of people were not. Long distance calling used to be quite expensive, after all. If your kid went to the big city to seek their fortune you might hear from them every few weeks, or every month, or once a year, and that wasn't particularly odd. This was even more the case before telephones were common, of course - people would send letters, but definitely not more than once a week and probably a lot less. It was just a normal, accepted fact that you'd hear from some family members who lived nearby often, and some who lived farther away very rarely.
The minimum amount of contact with family that is expected of people in the groupchat-facetime-instagram era is so much higher than at any previous point in history. The ceiling is about the same, since then and now multiple generations often live under the same roof, but the floor is higher by orders of magnitude.
How many adult children who are 'no-contact' or 'low-contact' now would also have been the ones who moved to the city and sent a letter every three months then? Is family estrangement an actual current problem, or is it just an illusion caused by smartphones?
When I complain about increased surveillance, control, and infantilization of older kids and young adults, it's often a level of surveillance and control that wouldn't have been possible, or at least practical, in previous generations. At minimum, it would've been escapable.
I was pretty close with my family and enjoyed living with or near them. When I moved away it was harder to stay in regular contact, just with Time and Life and differences in what we enjoyed/resources available to us changed. Interestingly, after feeling pretty burnt out trying to spend resources/time I didn't have to travel and hang out with them and finally being more non-committal about it and then eventually being up-front that I had some personal boundaries I needed to set in regards to expectations around this, they cut off all contact with me so...
