if I'm being totally honest I think my village would have put me in the woods to die as soon as it became clear that I had no interest in bathing, physical activity, competition, difficult skill development.
Sometimes it can be hard to tell who in my community would've thought this was ok.
I wanted to draw Tìvriä again. I plan to render a few of these sketches separately!
A little about Tìvriä! She was a quiet child growing up, very observant.
Her mother, Varang was almost sure that she was given a weak daughter out of spite for her actions against her own family.
What changed Varang's perspective in regards to Tìvriä, is the day that Tìvriä was being picked on.
The Mangkwan in my opinion would see bullying or teasing as a way to strengthen a child. Either you learn to take action and show strength or you fail and show nothing but weaknesses. Varang thought that Tìvriä would be the later, however when her precious woven doll was stolen from her, Tìvriä would use her quiet observations skills to her advantage by hitting the older child's recent training injury to successfully distract them before hitting them in a more vital place. Afterwards she triumphantly took her doll back.
Varang learned then that Tìvriä was not weak because she was quiet. No, she had simply been quiet so she could observe and use the information she learned to her advantage. She showed the signs of a future Tsahìk.
In present time, I would say that Tìvriä is either the same age as Spider and Neteyam (16 - 17), or just slightly older than the two. She is less quiet now, having found her voice around her people. Against enemies though? She prefers to wait, to stalk and strike when the moment is right.
While she does not coddle her people, much like her mother. She still cares for them. Txeva'ite an orphaned Mangkwan child (My friends character!) is someone that she especially enjoys the company of! She treats her more like a sister than she treats her own siblings.
Her current beliefs are that through fire and ash, will come a new life. A life free of Ewya.
I got a bit lazy I didn't bother with lining anything and slapped colors on it.
This takes place after From the Ashes. (This version of) Tamtey and So'lek are together in one of my versions of AFOP. It turned out that when Tamtey was taken, she was expecting their first. When So'lek finally reunites with her, and discovers this after she returns from alerting the other clans, he can't help but be concerned for them.
This is often an issue that I see in many fandoms, especially with characters that may not be emotionally stable, may be optimistic, naive, sheltered, and/or have experienced a traumatic life or childhood.
What I am referring to is the infantilization of characters.
What is infantilization? It is the act of treating someone as if they are much younger than they actually are. This includes disregarding their experience, emotional and physical maturity, and their actual age and instead regarding them as a child or helpless.
A lot of fandoms deal with this issue, but today I am specifically addressing A:FOP and the Sarentu characters.
I often see them treated as if they are children, specifically as if they were fourteen to thirteen. I especially see Nor and Teylan receive this treatment, as they are both emotionally vulnerable or explosive.
People may have headcanons about their age range, and personally, that is fine.
However, I see people attacking others over making their characters older or treating them as the adults they are stated to be in-game. (Ex: Shipping them with older characters or similar age range characters, addressing mature topics, etc.)
This is wrong and unfair to people in the fandom and to the characters and the character growth that they experience throughout their journey.
The Sarentu are explicitly stated to be adults several times in the game; while we do not get an exact age for each individual character, there is a rough age range for the group. (An example is when Alma is often scolded by other characters for treating the Sarentu like they were still the children she raised.)
Read more is due to length and possible spoilers for the main story and DLCs. I mainly try to avoid any spoilers regarding the newest DLC. As not everyone has had a chance to play.
As I mentioned, we have a rough age range for the Sarentu based off of in-game information, including DLCs. This is for both with and without consideration for their cryosleep. Their actual age always has an additional sixteen years added on to their current age.
Using Aha'ri, we can roughly estimate the age range of the entire Sarentu group. Aha'ri is presumed to be the eldest of the group based off of audio logs, data logs, and the fact we see her during flashbacks that are showing the player what happened during the Sarentu Moot.
For reference, I am going to disregard the newest DLC. As we do find out a few of the characters' actual age at the time of the Sarentu Moot. I am only disregarding this because not everyone has played the game or is up to date, and I would hate to further spoil any information in regard to it.
Starting with Aha'ri, we do see her during flashbacks of the mass slaughter of the Sarentu. She looks roughly the age of Tuktirey in Avatar 2. Which is seven years old. Meaning Aha'ri is roughly five to seven years old when the Sarentu Moot is happening. Nor being stated as close to being Aha'ri's age would roughly be the same age range.
Eight or seven years pass between the massacre and the initial scene of the game. Taking the lower number of both the years passed and Aha'ri's possible age. We can estimate that she was roughly twelve to thirteen when she was killed.
There are about eight years between Aha'ri's death and when the Battle for Pandora takes place and the Sarentu are put into cryosleep.
Using Aha'ri's rough age estimate of being twelve to thirteen when the very first scene takes place and the next scene. We can again estimate that they would be roughly around twenty to twenty-one years old.
Guessing the remaining members that survived is a little more difficult, as we can mostly guess their ages based off of how clearly they remember the events and remember anything else regarding their birth clan.
I say this is difficult because while age can certainly play a part in why they are unable to remember information clearly, this also could be a trauma response.
More often than not, when a person, especially a child, experiences trauma, their mind can find ways to suppress the information or trauma. In one case Teylan seemingly remembers nothing; this could be because he was under three years old when the massacre happened or be a trauma response by his brain in an attempt to preserve his mental state.
Versus Nor, who very clearly remembers the massacre and past Sarentu events and only has some difficulty remembering. This could be because he is the eldest or the same age as Aha'ri, or it could be because trauma and his mind are constantly forcing him to relive those events, making it seem like they are fresh.
However, there is little information in the data logs and audio logs in regard to age. We will assume that the reason that some characters are, in fact, able to remember things more clearly than others is due to age.
This makes Aha'ri and Nor the eldest, Ri'nela and Tamtey the middle-aged, and Teylan the youngest.
Based on Tamtey's speech patterns in Sarentu Moot flashbacks, we can guess that they were roughly three to four years old when they were abducted. Teylan is likely two to three years old.
Meaning the age range for the Sarentu is as follows. Teylan would be seventeen to eighteen years old, and Nor would be twenty to twenty-one years old. Anyone else is either in-between those age ranges or dead.
Again, just add sixteen years for their actual age if they were never put into cryosleep. (Which ironically would make them roughly Neytiri's age.)
Anyways, now that we have their physical age and actual age discussed to be between seventeen and twenty-one. Let's discuss Na'vi physical and mental maturity. We know that Na'vi reach physical maturity faster than humans do. Reaching physical, cultural, and mental maturity at the ages of fifteen to seventeen in Terran years. Whereas with humans, we reach physical and cultural maturity (at least in most countries in terms of culture) at the ages of eighteen to twenty. Mental maturity is roughly the same age range for us; however, it is important to note that it is stated our brains are not "fully" done maturing until sometime between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five.
A common thing to do when dealing with fictional races, species, and so on is to ask yourself the following questions. Are they biologically mature for their species? Are they culturally mature for their species? Are they cognitively mature for their species? Are they emotionally mature?
When looking at this, we've already answered two of them. They are biologically mature and cognitively mature. Just to add on, naivety does not equal a lack of maturity, nor does being optimistic or pessimistic.
Culturally speaking, this is easy to answer. In human society, they would be the equivalent of college students. They would be considered adults in nearly every country on Earth, being able to perform most functions within society save for some places that restrict gun or alcohol use.
In Na'vi society, they would be culturally mature, as you are required to prove that you are able to provide for yourself, as well as contribute to the clan with a specialty and complete a rite of passage for said specialty. For Hunters and Warriors, they take the Iknimaya. Though, we know not everyone takes this rite of passage; therefore, unless someone is training to be specifically a hunter or warrior, then they are not likely to take or do the Iknimaya.
Uniltaron, however, seems to be the universal event for every Na'vi that reaches cultural maturity, as this is considered to be when a Na'vi is reborn. In the Omaticaya it is done by consuming a worm, and so on and so forth. I am unsure if every clan has a different method, as there is a clear biodiversity between the Western and Eastern continents of Pandora. I cannot say for sure whether or not Tamtey being stung by the Kinglor Queen is the Aranahe's equivalent of said worm.
While that portion does still stand in the air, especially because I know that it technically was cut content that is referenced in official art books, Rin'ela, Rasi, and Tamtey all have Ikran. (Spoilers for Nor and Teylan: I will neither confirm nor deny because of the new DLC.)
This does mean that these three have passed their Iknimaya successfully and are considered adults
.
So by both human and Na'vi culture, they are considered adults.
Emotionally speaking, they're adults. They lived very sheltered lives, which contributes to their naivety, but they learn quickly and adapt quickly.
In Nor and Teylan's case, they both seem emotionally immature; however, they do not act like toddlers or children. They have a grasp of their basic emotions and an understanding of them, and unless it is within very specific circumstances relating to their childhood trauma and abusers, they act like young adults, who still can make impulsive decisions.
For Nor, he is more brash and abrasive. He is still finding himself and what it means to be Sarentu now that TAP is not restraining him. However, in most situations he understands his emotions and why he is experiencing them and shows empathy towards other Na'vi.
Teylan is very similar to Tamtey; however, like mentioned, he is more naive and optimistic than the others. However, naivety and optimism should never be considered childish traits or children-only traits. Despite that, people still use these traits to act as if a character is incapable of defending themselves, processing what is going on, or being able to do anything for themselves. Whereas for Teylan, he simply sees the best in people. He is willing to learn and to give people a chance and, over and over again, has shown that he is capable of handling himself and taking care of things, especially with technology. He simply lags behind because of the abuse and manipulation he suffered. He is the equivalent of someone growing up as a newborn in a completely different culture than he was born to and thus is relearning it all. He is capable of handling adult responsibilities and taking care of himself, but is simply learning a new and different culture now. Versus the other Sarentu, who all remember some of their culture.
Ri'nela and Tamtey are more emotionally reserved and mature. They show a clear understanding of their emotions and why they're experiencing them, but while they do not express it as much, whether by personal choice or again a response to how Harding and Mercer treated them, is up for interpretation and debate. However, it is very clear they've a grasp of who they are.
TLDR: Please stop treating them like they are children. They are young adults; we know them primarily as adults, minus a few key scenes in the beginning of the story. Every character that is not Alma, Mercer, or Harding met them when they were physically, mentally, culturally, and emotionally mature.
In-game, no one that is an actual friend to them and an ally takes advantage of their naivety or so on.
Allow people to have relationships with other characters; no one is taking advantage of anyone unless it's someone in the RDA, Alma, Mokasa, Harding, or Mercer. (I think that is everyone?) To say otherwise is to misrepresent the characters.
Yes, there may be age gaps, and yes, it is okay if you're uncomfortable, but two consenting adults are two consenting adults. No one that is not already mentioned has any sort of power, manipulation, control, or has known the Sarentu as children and has had the opportunity to groom them or negatively impact their growth.
That being said, as much as I say let people ship whom they want. Please do not harass people who also want to see their characters as having familial or platonic relationships with other characters. So on and on.
Given the recent introduction of the Mangkwan Clan.
Minus the Comic introduction-ish
@addiemaye and I decided our mutual bestie needed to also have a Na'vi OC! We let her pick out which clan, what type of Na'vi, if they were an avatar etc. etc. and we designed them their very own Na'vi!
I also decided to design a Mangkwan character at the same time, as well.
This is TÌvirä
She is the Eldest Daughter of Varang. Given what Varang implies in the movie to Quaritch, I imagine she's had a few children.
She is the Takarsem but not because she is the eldest. I imagine that Varang would have high expectations for any of her children given the Mangkwan value strength including strong-willed. Meaning whomever she has chosen as her successor would have to prove themselves in strength, battle and in ideology.
Tìvirä has done so over and over, proving her own loyalty to the clan. Though there is a slight difference in her ideology. She views fire not just as a pure source but as creation itself. That through its destruction and chaos will life be reborn without the will of Ewya.
You can check out my commissions here. Each of them are watermarked though.
The first two are submissions to a custom species group that I am in. They host a yearly autumn festival where you draw your characters in prompts.
I clearly have a favorite. (I spent tm time on one and barely met the deadline for the other..)
Second is another Isekai style character but this time for Fairy Tail! I ship her with Gajeel. (TBD if this a Gajeel x OC X LEVY ship or not.)
She will have support magic that is a kin to Celestial Magic / Celestial Keys. (Specifically a type of support magic meant to support Celestial Key users and their contracted spirits.)
Next one is my current fanfiction Isekai style character, Yusun Kamori. I made a reference for her because I needed a reference example for commissions.
Lastly, if you've followed me for a while than you know of Ka'raan or whom I renamed Tann. I drew her again :)
This was a Birthday Gift to myself! My birthday is this upcoming Sunday. Which is why I love that for this upcoming movie and the past one, they've both come out around the same month as my Birthday!
I plan to see the Movie at the first showing in my Theater, and I have the game DLC pre-ordered.
Anyways, this is a bit spoilery as I haven't figured out all the details of Amelia and Tsu'tey's story but this an interpretation of the possible attack on the Metkayina village.
Amelia would of course defend her children and any other children. In this case, she is defending her second youngest and her best friend!
I don't think that I am ever going to finish this one because it took a lot as is an I have a lot of other drawings I'm working on since I've started it. Maybe eventually but this was mostly a test of my new drawing tablet, I had gotten.
Story wise this was going to be a sort video clip of Amelia waking up for the first time in her Avatar. It was going to showcase her and the other scientist assisting her, examining the functionality of the Avatar.
The audio was going to be from the movie, so later in the scene you hear everyone else and Jake leaving to try out his new legs.
I'm excited and yet concerned for the upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora - From the Ashes.
Semi-Spoilers. The introduction article that came out with the reveal of the upcoming expansion teaser trailer reveals a few key information which I feel concerned and excited for. Please be aware of that going into the read-more that these are basic spoilers and if you want to be completely surprised on the context not to read further.
Why are the mangkwan at the western frontier? This takes place just right after the upcoming movie, but what happens for the mangkwan to migrate that far west?
The aranahe are gone? Did the manage to escape? What happens to out allies in that clan?
We play as So'lek, which is interesting but apparently the Sarentu are extremely scattered and not because they're following their ancestors footsteps and living amongst other clans to gather stories. It implies they're scattered because of the mangkwan and he must reunite them all??
Which also brings me to my next question, what happens to MC? We seemingly are forgotten in terms of our own relationship with people save for Anufi, Eetu, and Nefikia. Ex: We're often just referred to as The Sarentu. Only a select few characters call us anything different aka Ma'yawntu or Ma'eylan. (Characters I listed. They also seem to be the ones to give us the most guidance and individuality outside of maybe So'lek.)
They don't give us too much of a personality, or make people concerned with how feel and what we do both the above people I mentioned include So'lek. They treat us if we're sort of expendable almost?
Will we be unconscious? Hurt? Kidnapped? Will we even be mentioned or a concern outside of "The Sarentu". Will we be able to see us?
I think thats all my questions and concerns for now.
Edit: wrote this my phone mb for the grammar mistakes.
