supermarkets should have benches
everywhere should have benches
Jacob Wysocki "you are a regular guy" affirmations have genuinely improved my life. When I have a thing that needs doing I can shut down the evil anxiety/adhd voices in my brain and replace them with a little Jacob Wysocki voice affirming that I am a regular guy and I can do that task. And mind-Jacob is right, I am a regular guy and I can do that task.
there's an old anne rice interview circulating on twitter rn that i remember reading ages ago where she makes a pretty salient point about how submissive men who have bdsm fantasies etc will go to a sex worker and basically order the ala carte version of their fantasy to be performed in real life but women don't really have that same option and certainly not at the same point of availability so they read her horny books instead. and honestly that argument has been in the back of my mind every time people get on their high horses about the popularity of booktok romantasy novels or heated rivalry or whatever the "women are horny and we're upset about that" cultural property du jour is ever since. women, especially straight women, have so few outlets for their sexual desires, especially if they have a partner who doesn't share them, and i will never understand why "someone ELSE'S private sexual fantasy makes me uncomfortable and therefore they should not be allowed to engage with it, even if i am in no way being affected by it or even aware of it at all" is such a popular party line among allegedly progressive young people.
“It’s easy to assume”: someone’s misconception is about to be amiably corrected
“It’s tempting to assume”: someone’s assumption is about to be criticized
“It’s comforting to assume”: someone’s assumption is going to be read for filth
@21st-century-minutiae something for your blog?
The above is explaining three semantically similar statements with different connotations, in decreasing order of prevalence. In the early twenty-first century, native English speakers would understand the connotations implicitly, and would not need the detailed explanation of the above, which draws from the pattern.
In all cases, these statements serve as the prologue to some correction for a mistaken assumption, as explained above.
In the first case, the word "easy" is used to emphasize that the mistake is common, natural, and understandable, and that there is no shame for being mistaken on the given matter of topic. This is a very common turn of phrase.
In the second case, the word "tempting" is used to emphasize that the mistake is born out of some desirable motive. The biases that caused one to form the mistaken assumption as potentially sympathetic to the corrector. This is an less common, but known, turn of phrase, implying a harsher critique.
In the third case, the word "comforting" is used to emphasize that that the only reason someone is making an assumption is because they are coddling their own biases, even though any attempt at thinking things through would prove it irrational. It is the equivalent of accusing someone of sticking their head in the sand, like an allegorical ostrich. "Read for filth" is an idiomatic expression meaning to offer full, unfiltered criticism of something, ripping it apart. This is even less common to use, but the point would be understood as being a prelude to the harshest criticism of the three.
Physicists vs subjectivity is always such a fascinating conflict to watch. Frustrating and confusing, of course, but it makes you think and it's definitely a hell of a way to kill time.
Today's fun enrichment activity: reading a book by an astrobiologist whose background is physics trying to explain life (as in the concept and origins of living things). It turns out that trying to reconcile a physicist's understanding of life and definitions therein with one with a background of biology/paleontology/large-scale earth science is very difficult, and you very quickly encounter a number of conflicts. This is, of course, generally true about a (particularly more theoretical) physicist's understanding of almost anything when compared to a person with almost any other background, because physics is insane in so many ways and the people who study it are insane for choosing to do so.

My brother had lost the right to mock my deeply unwise vending machine purchase because he's spending his weekend driving to Iowa to buy a 1954 Cadillac limousine.
He doesn't have an explanation for this other than the fact that it's cool. And honestly, that's a pretty compelling argument
Oh good, he's named it.
He got her and she's gargantuan
THE BIG is home!!
Update: brother says: tell your internet people- I’ve been making the car shiny and it is COOL.
He's correct. This is excellent.
I left my brother unattended he traded the little corvair next to THE BIG for this thing. I think he's building an armada
He is casting spell of car repair on it, I think.
Brother has been left unattended and has gotten himself a 1970 Cadillac DeVille.
And now it just needs a plate!

If it keeps you from killing yourself it's not stupid. This applies to anything btw.
Bestie. How dare you leave “do not mock the life preserver…” in the tags.

After school care pulled me aside about my child dropping an f-bomb “without remorse” and I put on my concerned face and nodded a bunch.
Apparently he was building something with a younger kid “who really looks up to him and is just starting to make friends” and said “Hey, you’re really fucking good at this.” which is, in my estimation, really a parenting victory.
I absolutely failed at doing this:
