Okay so Victorian erotica is literally the most heinous, morally bankrupt, horrific shit I've ever read - but I've read a fair bit, partly from historical interest but also because a while back I helped a friend with a university project she was doing about censorship and pornography in 19th century England.

Anyway I need to share with you all the most hilarious line that has ever been written, circa 1887:

I feel like this excerpt is significantly enhanced by knowing that the novel in question is a first-person narrative written from the perspective of an inexplicably sapient flea who lives on Bella's body, and that's why the third priest's penis is described in this way: from the narrator's perspective it literally blots out the sky.

Psychiatry is hard at work crafting the newest edition of its diagnostic bible, DSM-6.

…so they’re now trying to search for “biomarkers”- which are essentially genes, or circumstances of conception/birth/what have you, that can “increase the risk” of mental illnesses. how is this any different from people wondering if there’s a “gay gene?” or autism speaks trying to find a genetic or reproductive “cure for autism?”

it’s not. this is barely disguised eugenics that they have ACKNOWLEDGED may (will) do more to harm than good for people with abnormal mental states. what else could the end result of finding a “mental illness gene” be than a reason to further marginalize those who are already marginalized, already branded as more likely to be (or even inherently) “mentally ill” and eventually discourage them to reproduce, either by coercion or force?

Psychiatry as an institution functions to obfuscate the causes of mental and emotional disturbance (economic exploitation, abuse, lack of access to resources, etc) by describing mental illness as an individual pathology that needs to be recognized and treated by science.

Given where these hardships cluster most intensely, it is extremely useful to white supremacy and eugenics to have a "scientific" method of proving that pathology is more common among "degenerate" populations.

The DSM's various incarnations have corresponded to shifts in which part of this process have been considered more or less important to prioritize - the latest restructuring to focus on biomarkers is just a recalibration to better suit the needs of the imperial-capitalist white supremacist project.

I need people to please look into these types of posts before accepting them at face value. The APAs Future DSM Strategic Committee is looking into several changes for the DSM 6, one of which is adding biomarkers as a part of the diagnostic structure. The proposal is listed in their report The Future of DSM: A Report from the Structure and Dimensions Subcommittee which suggest 4 parts of diagnostic assessment including "(1) contextual factors, such as measures of socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental determinants of health, functioning, quality-of-life, and developmental and lifespan factors; (2) biomarkers and biological factors; (3) diagnoses that allow for different levels of specificity and severity; and (4) transdiagnostic features including symptoms that occur across many conditions." Biomarkers are only one aspect of a biopsychosocialcultural model that has been growing in use over the last decade. It is not about eradicating genes, it is about accurately identifying those who are at higher risk and providing support as early as possible to reduce distress and dysfunction

While the DSM is a deeply flawed manual, let's please not engage in anti-science anti-healthcare rhetoric that works to undermine the actual care being done. Psychology and psychiatry have very dark histories, as does our medical system in general, and it is a field that can easily be bastardized to fit the beliefs of those in power. However, those with mental health concerns should not be made to distrust those who wish to support and advocate for them, as that only serves to further reduce access to care.
