Scammer Targeting Tumblr Artists
The title says it all really. So if nothing else, please share and reblog this post to raise awareness for those that might be caught out - both artists and followers. For a TL:DR, please look at the bottom of the post
What is happening?
Right now, there is at least one person actively impersonating multiple artists across tumblr in an effort to scam their followers into paying for fake ‘cheap commissions’. The scammer will clone a tumblr, usually using a slight change to the url/account name to look like the real deal. They will then message people directly through Tumblr with messages along the lines of “Hey, i’m doing cheap commissions right now. DM me to get one”. Naturally, this is ends up just being a way to take their money without giving anything back in return.
Who does this affect?
Everyone. Simple as that. As long as the scammer in question works unopposed, they are free to spread their influence and continue to scam more people. Even if you haven’t been targeted yet, it does not mean you are safe or immune. Several artists have already fallen victim to this scammer, and I encourage any artists that have to reblog this post with the details of their affected account(s) and the ones the scammer has set up.
How can we stop this?
Tumblr, like many other social media platforms, seems to care very little about ‘minor’ occurences like this one, and despite reaching out directly to them over a week ago through multiple avenues of contact - they have refused to comment on the situation, provide a recommended response for users, or take action on behalf of those already affected. Despite this, there are still tools at our disposal that we can use to make this scam more difficult, and to increase its visibility to those within Tumblr staff that are required by policy to take action. Tumblr has the following to say on the topic of impersonation: Confusion or Impersonation. Don’t do things that would cause confusion between you or your blog and a person or company, like registering a deliberately confusing URL. Don’t impersonate anyone. While you’re free to ridicule, parody, or marvel at the alien beauty of Benedict Cumberbatch, you can’t pretend to actually be Benedict Cumberbatch. They then provide a link to this online form that you can fill out if you suspect someone’s identity is being confused. Unfortunately, this can only be filled out if you are the victim of impersonation. In other words, only the artists can fill this out legitimately. So, what about the followers and users of tumblr whom aren’t being impersonated? Our most valuable tool in this online platform is the platform itself. It enables us to spread our word near-virally across all the many sub-communities on Tumblr with remarkable efficiency for a user-driven system. We can take advantage of that effect to increase awareness of the situation. Even if you - the one reading this right now - aren’t an artist or don’t know an artist, the act of reblogging this post or sharing it directly with friends improves it’s ‘ranking’ in popularity increasing its chances to be seen by more people. We don’t need everyone on Tumblr to see the post for it to be effective, just like we don’t need the entirety of the human population of the world to be immune to a disease for that disease to be rendered ineffective or eradicated. If enough people are aware, the likelihood of pulling off a successful scam increases dramatically reducing efficiency to a point that it no longer becomes profitable to continue.
Why should I care?
It disheartens me to say this, but of the many artists I contacted directly over the past week to warn about this issue many of them refused to listen or dodged the responsibility with lines like;
“I’m not being impersonated, so it doesn’t affect me”
“I’m just one person. I can’t make an impact”
“I need to take care of my community. Other people can look after theirs”
This is honestly disappointing that so many artists or art-rebloggers care so little as to intentionally wave the responsibility of keeping their followers and fellow artists safe from this, that they cannot spare 10 seconds of their time to share an informative post. I’m not here to bash artists, but it is time that everyone takes responsibility for their own communities, and of those around them. Artists: You have a responsibility to ensure that your followers and fans aren’t being abused by someone who may impersonate you. If they succeed, your reputation will be damaged, and your followers will resent you. Your followers are also almost guaranteed to be following other artists meaning your efforts can spread beyond your own circle of influence, so don’t be naive when you think you have little effect. Followers: You have just as much responsibility to be aware of those that might try to scam you or your fellow followers. Don’t just sit in silence when you see something wrong: Ignoring the issue only makes it more resilient to our efforts to stop it. You are the vocal majority if you just use your voices to be heard!
TL:DR
A scammer is impersonating artists and scamming money from their followers under the guise of ‘cheap commissions’. If we ignore the issue, it will get worse. Every single person that reads this can afford to spend just 10 seconds to reblog and share this post. Those 10 seconds can save others from being scammed for hundreds of dollars. Reblog & Share
Might as well be on the safe side
If you’re getting out of the blue messages from “me” that ain’t me, I don’t think I’ve sent anyone a message that wasn’t in response to something they said first in at least a year
Stay smart yall
Yeah this probably won’t affect me, but just FYI, i don’t offer commissions, and if i did they would not be cheap.
But please verify who you’re talking to anyway if they’re offering you something that sounds really good if it’s someone you don’t regularly converse with, it’s just a good practice in general!
Just so y'all know, I ain’t offering commissions or any artwork or things like that.
If you get anything from me, it ain’t me!
Protect yourself.
@destan-of-the-shadows
I offer commissions but I won't ever message anyone about them. You message me first so if you get something from me it's NOT me.
“Don’t trace” originally started as a warning against tracing as art theft (as in, tracing someone else’s art without permission or credit is art theft) and then over the intervening years turned into “you can’t use references because it’s cheating” and I think that’s one of the worst cases of the telephone game I’ve ever personally experienced
you are allowed to trace as practice
you are allowed to trace your own work (for example photographs you took yourself or to keep architectural consistency)
you are allowed to trace things the original artist is encouraging you to trace
you SHOULD use references
you SHOULD be allowed to pick up other artists’ artistic tics you like (…as long as they’re not offensive, like blackfacing, but that’s a different kettle of fish)
you SHOULDN’T go around moralizing at other people about how they learn best because you can and will lose friends that way and you can and will hurt other artists’ development that way.
Also other than art theft there IS no such thing as cheating in art okay use sparkle pens and fan brushes to your heart’s content why is that even a thing I have to say (…and yes I’ve had conversations in the analog world about fan brushes as “cheating” I’m so tired of snotty artists who think you shouldn’t be allowed to use tools that make things easier because they can do it the hard way)
But honestly, this need to be said louder, as an artist you end up feeling like you aint getting better, trying to draw in perspective without having a guide line . And when others shame artist for using references its like they are expecting the artist to know by memory how everything works on every perspective.
To Consider that fan brushes, or custom brushes are cheating and expecting the artist to do everything in the “original” way is like wanting the cashier to charge you without using a calculator to do the sum. Tools are invented to be used.
“tools are invented to be used” well put
Not allowing using references is same as telling to a chef they can’t use recipes but they have to pull any dish in the world out of their asses just like that. The first thing, the very first thing my photography teacher told us was “When photographing was invented, ARTISTS took pictures of cities and traced them on their paintings because hey - easier work! Why bother to work hard when you can make it easy for yourself and save your time and energy?”
when I was studying illustration our tutor straight up told us it was a good idea to trace reference photos. It get the bare bones of the image down so you can mess around with it later. Saves time, can improve quality of work, gets commissions finished faster
Professional artists use photo reference. Anyone that thinks someone learning to draw shouldn’t use references doesn’t know shit about professional art and should keep their fool mouth shut.
Say hello to my version of “Jack Frost/Winter” who I’ve had for years (well before the Rise of the Guardians movie, though I was so happy to see that movie with one of my fave characters in it XD) that I never give enough love. Really. I haven’t drawn him since 2013, when I still used a mouse and GIMP to draw X”D Poor guy needed some love XD
I actually really like how his pants and t-shirt came out in this one :)

Finally got around to redrawing Thessie for an accurate as-of-now picture of him, without his wings and tail. Even finally got around to drawing him with his signature weapon of a deal-bladed staff X”D I love this guy to death but like never draw him, I need to remedy that X”D

First drawing of 2018 :D
It’s my Dessie (Of coarse it is, who else would it be? X”D) This time though I decided to actually draw him in a proper outfit instead of with his midriff showing. He still uses the midriff one a lot (mostly for sparing and hanging around just chilling) but if he needs to go out somewhere he’d ware something more like this most of the time (at *LEAST he’d toss the vest over his skin-tight top! X”D) Also, vests are one of his “Things” and I never draw him in them, so it was high time I did so at the very least XD
He’s also pulled his hair back here into a little ponytail and the rest loose to get rid of some of that annoying volume that he both loves and hates at the same time XD
Had fun trying out a new style for drawing hair that I always loved but had problems with. It was a bit tricky but I really like the results, May try using it more often, we shall see XD

Last art of 2017!
SO. This is my D&D group, but in an AU.
I had this dream where everyone was human but maintained their colorations and all from normal D&D, and the world was the same but everyone wore casual modern clothing and ALL of the weapons were bats. Even if you were a wizard you hit people with a bat while chanting a spell. This dream went on for too long for me to ignore it so I ended up drawing everyone whenever I was bored. So …. Enjoy this Bat Gang/Biker Gang AU my brain somehow thought up and spent too long drawing out! X”D

PEOPLE who scream in the tags under my art
you are so fucking valid and you are my biggest source of motivation i love you
Commission (flat color full body) I got of the person’s character, Ahsan, a reef merman. I don’t usually draw merfolk so this was interesting to work on. The long flowing fins were more challenging then originally expected, but fun.
