Hi is this blog still active?
Hello, I'm still here. I've been dealing with some pretty significant life changes lately. Finding it hard to find joy in things I used to enjoy, like learning about ballet and studying languages. This blog is not inactive, but neither would I say it's active. Much like my life, it's in limbo.

Is there any role you want for Shakirova and Iliushkina to have their debuts on?
Thanks for asking! I would love to see Shakirova as Swanhilda in Coppelia... unfortunately I don't think the Mariinsky perform it :( It's a ballet I enjoy and a role think Renata would be great in!! I hope to see Iliushkina debut as Masha in The Nutcracker, which I think is certainly more likely to happen.
Oh Anonymous, we're really in it now. I was so disappointed with the Mariinsky production of Coppelia. I didn't see too much of Renata dancing but what I did see I was just like...
Even Nureyev got cancelled (and for good reasons)
Apparently, it is very hard to get away with terrible behaviour, even if you are Nureyev.
Hailed as a superstar, his legendary status still shines 30 years after his death as arguably the most famous ballet dancer ever. But I'm not sure many are aware of his problematic and incredibly erratic behaviour, on and off stage.
What shocked me the most?
In 1969, during the premiere of Giselle with La Scala ballet, he slapped a ballet dancer WHILE ON STAGE.
Yes, you read that correctly, DURING THE PERFORMANCE.
The reason? After landing a bit off, Nureyev found himself too close to the corps de ballet. Upset, he proceeded to INSULT the closest ballerina, who DARED to respond in kind. And low and behold, the great Nureyev thought it appropriate to SLAP the girl who, understandably shocked and upset, fled the stage.
But this is not the end. Nureyev then FOLLOWED her backstage, where he had to be restrained by stagehands, all while "Giselle" had to IMPROVISE a variation because her "Albrecht" was suddenly missing.
Of course, the theatre tried to shut the whole thing down, but it is hard to hide from A LITERAL AUDIENCE, and so news of this shenanigan travelled quickly all over the world.
To save face, La Scala pulled the entire upcoming production of the Nutcracker, of which Nureyev was going to be the star, and replaced it with a recast Giselle. The exile didn't last long though, and mere months after the incident he was cast again to open the summer season.
As for the girl, who filed a formal complaint for slander and battery, she was painted as an arriviste who was only after fame and was downgraded as an understudy for two years.
Crazy, right?
Another instance where: “He swore at her and kicked her up the backside so hard that she left the stage in great pain. A doctor was called who, after examining her, said that her coccyx had been damaged and was bent. She was in agony”
✨✨Renata Shakirova, Swan Lake✨✨
✨✨June 6 2023, Mariinsky Theatre✨✨
Boy do I have some thoughts about Alexander Sergeev. Although I am on a life journey to try and rein in my natural tendency toward negativity, relentless mindless positivity doesn't suit me either, so I will just keep this short.
Even before Coppelia I was really not jiving with any of his choreography or style or costume choices. I could go on and on about how painfully mediocre it all is, but I won't. His production of Coppelia unfortunately really sealed the deal with that for me, which is such a bummer because I really like that ballet (and was VERY excited to see Renata in my dream role for her!!!) And given some recent life choices that I have unfortunately been made aware of, I'm wondering if there isn't a damn good reason he is such a good Espada. le sigh...
swanhilda's angry little emboîtés my beloved
My hot take is that Bulanova had a phenomenal Kitri debut. I am not surprised at all. It wasn’t flawless and there are things I could quibble about, but she brought the fire. I suspect that the atmosphere in the hall was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Video from irinaba TG:
Also really impressed with Bulanova's Kitri! I'm definitely warming to Bulanova as a dancer. I'm starting to see a bit of what everyone else seems to see. I hope she has the chance to dance this many more times!
Khiteeva & Kuznetsova’s (debut) Paquita variations. Both of them are just divine. Khiteeva’s stage presence imbues this variation with mystery. And Kuznetsova radiates elegance and joy. It’s hard to believe this is her first season. I look forward to seeing them on the Mariinsky stage more often. And Bulanova, too! Kitri! 🔥
Ma Iru is one of my favorite ballet YouTube channels. Always a good selection.
Now, if someone can point me to a good resource where I can read up on the names and histories of the Paquita variations, thanks in advance.
I was really impressed with Khiteeva in all the videos I saw from this performance! Her arms are divine✨
Popping in to say whoever the conductor at the Mariinsky has been lately seems to have a vendetta against the dancers. Work with them, please!!!!!!!!
Renata Shakirova Promoted to Prima!!!!
HUGE NEWS!! Renata Shakirova has just been promoted to prima ballerina after her performance of Syuimbike in Shurale !!! I can't think of another promotion I've wanted more than this one since Novikova's! So so happy for her!! She is so deserving of being a prima!
A better video of Renata's promotion
I love how celebratory and dramatic it is!
And I love that it was after Shurale, which I think is her signature role!
Girl where are you??? Shakirova just became PRINCIPAL!!!
💖💖💖💖I am so happy for Renata!!!!!!!!!!!!
It just feels right. It's been wonderful to see so much support for her from everywhere. She's the kind of dancer ballet needs.... engaging and personable, full of expression, feeling, beauty, and exquisite grace. I'm very happy she has achieved what has undoubtedly been a lifelong goal. Her dream has come true, and I hope she is proud of herself.
I heard this wonderful news the day of, watched every angle of the on stage announcement, got goosebumps and even shed a tear. Shortly after it was announced I began to wonder what it must feel like to be in her position. I really can't even fathom it! There must be so much more pressure on her now, but thankfully all her performances since the announcement seem to have been received very well. Love to see a confident woman succeeding at the top of her game! Russian critics are brutal, but she has weathered that world basically her whole life, and has a lot of support - and a lot of international fans. If she ever wanted a position at any other international theatre, she would be welcomed.
I'm glad the company recognized and rewarded her efforts and stopped stringing her along. She is THE best Kitri in the world. She is an elite. She is a phenomenal, extremely talented and hardworking dancer who brings joy people around the world. I am so glad that despite her extremely busy schedule, she has remained healthy and injury free. Feels like she will be the last Mariinsky prima of an era. There will never be anyone else like her, and I am very glad to see her achieve such well-deserved position. I can't wait to see her future performances - hopefully someday in person.. hopefully she will stay healthy and continue to dance for many years to come. Someday she could be like Tereshkina, the most senior and 'star attraction' of the company.
I wish for her a successful season, maybe a Coppelia debut👀, and some more opportunities to dance Juliet.
Congratulations dear Renata!
