That is the reason that when she found herself looming over the car of her now -ex- boyfriend, she was surprised. Glass was everywhere. The car didn’t have any left, not even headlights or mirrors. Somehow she had managed to puncture a tire with her crowbar. Every square inch of the metal was dimpled or broken. She dropped the crowbar to the ground with a clatter. This want wasn’t her. The stars shimmer and shine like sequins on black velvet. They shone on without a care for the people far, far below them. It did not matter if they sew worshipped or ignored completely. Their purpose was to twinkle, to illuminate, to glow, regardless of the attention it garnered. The oppressive heat of summer lessened just enough to tolerate in a topless car. The wind was stronger, pulling the heat away enough to breathe, and the feeling of putting the pedal down was enough to feel like going somewhere. Like really going somewhere. Further away than work or even the county line. It helped with the restlessness, too, with the ache of feeling the best years slide past in traffic. Mountains define a place. Areas without them – prairie and grassland and desert – are consisted too open, barren, even. California mountains are different from Pennsylvanians mountains. The Sierra Nevada range is young and tall and most definitely imposing. This is helped by the fact that there is nothing but scrub grass on them. There are no amber waves of grain on their sides. Perhaps their austerity is why they loom so much higher than the Appalachians, who are coated with trees and grass and animals. The plants – the very life of them – weighs the mountains down. . . . Grass was supposed to be green and vibrant, supposed to hold dew until each tiny blade sparkled and glittered like a bouquet of emerald and peridot. Instead it was muddy brown, sepia colored like old film that was left in boxes and forgotten. It was no longer a springy cushion for the footfall of people and animals but thousands of miniscule pins and knives. Each shaft resisted bending, insisted on staying tall for as long as possible before snapping. It would crunch down with a sound like broken bone and stay there. There was always a path through old grass, the traitorous plant crying ‘this way! this way!’ to any who bothered to listen

Her hair was like the ocean; choppy, uncontrollable, vaguely mesmerizing and deep, deep red. That nagged her, the red ocean. Generations ago they had given up on thinking the ocean had ever been any other color, something different than crimson, yet on certain days it felt odd. Some people liked the red ocean, claiming it was dynamic and energetic. She thought it looked like the world and everything on it was bleeding into the water. The thought was enough to make her shiver.
