Dean stans have been gaslit for YEARS by the rest of fandom, we were always put down for complaining, told that Dean was the main character and the centre of everything (he wasn’t in the writing, it’s just Jensen’s charisma levels are so high he just has to stand around and he still steals the scene) and that we had nothing to complain about.
We had EVERYTHING to complain about!….
s4 Andrew Dabb joins the writers room, first thing he did was call Dean a dick.
S5 they built up Dean and Michael all season, and then it got side swiped so Sam could say yes to Lucifer! Apparently Dean wanting to say yes got him beaten up but Sam saying yes was him being a Big Damn Hero.
Also, Fallen Idols - apparently Sam’s excuse for all his mistakes in s4 was Dean didn’t listen or understand him enough. Sam drinking demon blood was all Dean’s fault according to Sam. Yes really!
s6 they tried to make Sam the new Dean, (Jared bragged about it at SDCC). Soulless Sam was Sam in Hell, only MUCH WORSE THAN DEAN’S HELL!!!! - very important! and I remember a mutual called s6 the “passion of Sam!” Just remembered, s6 finale was pretty much 75% Sam.
s7 was STILL more Lucifer because every Samcentric storyline gets to go on longer than anyone else’s, and the writers could not even be bothered to discuss Dean in s7 at SDCC. Literally, not one word about Dean from any of the writers! More Limp!Sam all the way through. Really thought things would change though when Dean ended up in Purgatory…right???
s8 They gave Sam’s soft focused soap opera with Amelia more screentime than Purgatory!! There was the great conflict over Benny and of course Sam had the writers on his side, they had Charlie become the writers mouth piece saying Dean was the bigger dick for sending a text message while Sam only tried to get Benny killed. He got his way when Benny was then killed on the alter of Sam and then we had to deal with limp!Sam fanfic for the rest of the season. I hate s8 with a passion.
s9 was the umpteenth What’s Wrong With Sam storyline when he became possessed by an angel, cue terrible acting from Jared. It was all Dean’s fault of course, another in a long line of “lets push Dean under the bus” storylines/episodes. By this time I was in the middle of my MythArc4Dean campaign, because myself and other Dean stans had had enough and thanks to Robbie Thompson we were heard and FINALLY Dean got some storylines with the MoC.
s10 Demon Dean only lasted 3 episodes, in comparison to every similar Sam storyline which lasts twice as long. The latter half of the season became more about Sam being a hypocrite, going behind Dean’s back.
s11 Oh look it’s Lucifer - AGAIN!! Why did they never bring back Alistair who was a much better villain? That’s right, because Alistair was all about Dean!! Can’t have that! They go back to the cage because of course the writers forgot Dean was in Hell for 40 years but have no trouble revisiting Sam’s time in the cage again and again and AGAIN! Dean is barely in ANDREW DABB’S midseason finale because he gives no shits about Dean and never will.
Just My Imagination - utter bullshit episode that villanised child Dean for not taking care of Sam when the actual grown up who was responsible was absent. It was a full on pity fest for Sam and his childhood, completely brushing under the carpet what Dean went through being Sam’s damn caretaker. Sam got to be a child thanks to Dean, Dean didn’t but apparently Dean and his suffering wasn’t worth any pity or him getting his own imaginary friend.

s12 onwards - I gave up fighting. I DID send postcards at the beginning, but this time it was a lost cause. The writing was so terrible that even if they DID give Dean any importance I knew it’ll only last three episodes and be badly written…proved me right with Michael!Dean.
Dean’s feelings were constantly diminished, pushed aside and not listened to again and AGAIN!!! He was regularly punished by the narrative for daring to be upset which fandom then took their que from (even this season when Destiel fans who are all pro-Dean now were villainising him over his feelings about Jack and Cas). I could write 30000 words on how badly Dabb and co dealt with Dean over the last 4 seasons, it would be easier if I just add the link to my #Dean versus the writers tag which began around s12.
There’s a reason why the Dean side of fandom dwindled over the last four years, almost all my mutuals stopped watching, some left the fandom completely - there’s only so long you can watch Dean be cast aside, belittled, written as dumb to elevate Sam, have his friendships and traits passed over to Sam to make Sam more well rounded, be gaslit by his family, have all his feelings deemed invalid unless they tallied with Sam and Cas’s feelings, be villainised for being legitimately angry about his mother’s death, have his entire existence reduced to being one half of a ship, the list goes on. The celebrated confession scene in Purgatory still makes me sick - Dean apologising once again for daring to be upset about Mary. Dean is wrong, Dean’s feelings are wrong!!

I only stayed for the gif sets, and to continue to defend Dean but the last four years have just been bad fanfic created by Dabb to cater for one section of fandom.
So yeah, Andrew Dabb wrote a shitty finale…which YES was a terrible thing for the show’s legacy, but like, he writes ONE bad episode now and suddenly everyone’s protective of Dean and raging against Dabb.
Well, while I love how everyone is FINALLY realising what a piece of shit writer Dabb is, especially when it comes to Dean, where the f**k were you all four years ago??
We could have done with this collective rage then! Instead of us being told to shut up because everyone was convinced that Dean not allowing to own his own feelings was “character development” and loved the idea of Dean playing Dad with his mother’s killer.
Oh and everything above? Is just the TIP of the iceberg!
