The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill 2026 that was introduced in the Lok Sabha of India on March 13, seeks to give a precise definition of the term "transgender" and exclude "different sexual orientations and self-perceived sexual identities" from the proposed law's ambit.

The revised definition excludes trans men, non-binary persons, and many trans women, effectively placing a majority of the transgender population outside its scope,

This undermines the dignity, autonomy and constitutional rights of transgender, intersex, and genderqueer persons

The proposed amendment threatens the very existence of many trans persons, while stripping away already limited benefits that they have.

I cannot stress how important making sure your voices and opinions are heard for this matter. I urge everyone to email their MPs to inform them of your stance in this matter and let them know that the people that they represent do not support this bill

India is the world's largest democracy and democracy stands for the rights of every citizen. We in good faith, cannot let this bill come to pass in the Parliment.

if i can add, this was the official 'response' given to the national council for transgender persons who visited the ministry of social justice in delhi to discuss this bill yesterday:

clearly a very gross and horrible stance the government have taken without considering a single input from the trans and intersex communities. they seem adamant on going forward with this change so its more urgent than ever to speak up against it

i urge all indian users (queer or ally) to SIGN THE FORM LINKED ABOVE and send emails to their MPs and let it be known that the public does not stand with this amendment !!

there is also a PETITION that users in or outside of india can sign! please add a signature and share the petition widely!

after a Bill gets passed by the Lok Sabha, it will then be sent to the Rajya Sabha for consideration (that is what is currently happening). If the Bill gets Passed in the Rajya Sabha, it will get presented to the President who will then give her assent and turn the Bill into an Act that can be enforced.

The Lok Sabha has cleared a key amendment to India’s transgender rights law, marking a significant shift in how the community is defined.

another thing to know about the criminal action being proposed is that they can even criminalize acts of 'forcing' people into 'becoming' transgender (looots of emphasis on kids here, i wonder why 🙄) which in 99% of cases is obviously thinly veiled code for 'acts where people help a trans individual' whether its socially, financially, medically, etc. so yep. it will literally become illegal to be a trans ally for ones own family, friends, colleagues/employees, patients, you name it. absolutely horrendous but not surprising when its the same 'logic' being pulled in so many transphobic laws in other countries too, which of course our very original leaders love taking ~inspiration~ from. not hard at all to imagine a near future where they pull this same shit for the queer community at large and recriminalize being queer or an ally in any form, because they sure seem to be sticking out their foot to test the waters of this plan right now

with todays very rushed and impatient decision (quite literally wrapped it up in 2.5 hours and without ever consulting a select commitment or any representatives from the council of transgender persons) the bill is 1/3rd on its way to being passed. time is limited and we have to keep the pressure on MPs up until it goes to rajya sabha because it may still be struck down then with enough public backlash. this discussion can be days, weeks, or even months from now and theyre likely to be expecting the general public to have moved on by that point, which is why its even more important to keep our eyes on this bill and keep talking about it without falling into apathy/and doomerism!! thats the weapon of the state thats how they want us to feel so we give up too early and they have an excuse to pass this bill without any opposition, we have to fight back and amplify the voices of the indian trans communities now more than ever !!

for my indian trans siblings who might be upset and distressed at todays news, you all deserve much better than such leaders of our country who would so callously risk the lives of an entire community for their own narrow minded agendas this way. please remember that theres many of us in the public on your side and please do not lose hope !! the world is a better and kinder place with all of you in it no matter what these corrupt and evil politicians want us to believe otherwise. please make use of these resources if you need and take care of yourselves, lets keep fighting the good fight together 🩵🩷🤍🩷🩵
