Jester the Pokéfan wants to battle!

Full design and analysis under the cut!

Next in my Pokémon x Critical Role series, Jester the Pokéfan! Considering her love of cute things and overtly friendly nature, it'd make sense Jester's Trainer class is Pokéfan - as shown by the various Pokémon in her design (Munchlax stockings, Pikachu medal) she loves all Pokémon, and obsessively so! Despite this, Jester's design is primarily inspired by the female protagonists of Pokémon games.

Her friendly nature is represented by the round shapes all over her design, notably her top and big hair bow. Her dominanting color is pink for obvious reasons, but she also has a lot of yellow due to her solar personality... and surprisingly, black.

Jester is joyful and friendly, but that is not all she is. She is also lonely, sly, and morally dubious with a tendency to favor her desires and loved ones over following any sort of moral code. Her mittens, like her baskets, are reminiscent of classical Pokémon Trainer design, showing her love for adventure, but are also what a thief would wear.

Finally, her love of romance is represented by her Love ball and her feminine skirt, while the splashes of paint on her top represents her artsy nature.

"Open your heart to chaos!"

Creative, cheerful, and full of energy, Jester is a budding trainer ready to take the Pokéworld by storm! Massive Pokémon fan since her youngest age, Jester prioritises cute Pokémon in her party over powerful ones. Yet, she is somehow a surprisingly powerful Trainer, winning most of her battles through her creativity and surprising intelligence.

Team breakdown:

Impidimp: This Fairy-Dark trickster, pink and with a tendency to make trouble, is perfect for Jester! Fairy is Jester's dominant type due to her whimsical, almost childish energy, yet never to be underestimated - much like Impidimp, who despite its small size is an excellent troublemaker, rapidly using status moves with its ability Prankster. Its distinctly fey themes also represent Jester's connection to the Traveler.

Grafaiai: Jester being at heart an artist who loves showing her creations to her loved ones (and literally anyone else tbh), it is natural she'd get the Pokémon known for painting tags all over the forest. Grafaiai is also cute, wily and colorful, like her.

Tinkaton: It's cute and pink, it's Fairy type, and it's got a big ass hammer. 10/10 Jester Pokémon.

Slurpuff: Yet another Fairy-type for Jester! As the designated Cupcake Pokémon (its name is even Cupcanaille in French!), it has earned its spot in our favourite pastry-loving tielfing.

Gardevoir: Jester has a Gardevoir because...huh... Because she got it from her mom! Marion has a Gardevoir too, and this highly emotionally intelligent, loving Pokémon represents the unbreakable link between a mother and her daughter. Plus it's a Fairy type! That's why Gardevoir is on this list. No other reason. There's no other distinctly memorable personality trait of Jester's that could be connected to Gardevoir, right? *glances at the many Gardevoir fanarts on the internet* Yep that's it nothing else to see here.

Vaporeon: ...............okay. Look. If you understand why this guy is here, contratulations! You have the same sense of humor as Laura Bailey! If you don't understand why this guy is here, good. Keep it that way. Your innocence is a treasure.

Laudna the Hex Maniac wants to battle!

Next in my Pokémon × Critical Role AU is Laudna the Undead! In this AU, Laudna is a young, joyful girl who lives in a cemetery. She wants to make friends, but her creepy nature and mannerism scares people away. This led her to befriend ghost-types Pokemon in the cemetery instead... until a beautiful woman dressed in all black came to the cemetery and told Laudna she could unleash her true potential, but only if Laudna does as she says. Surely, if Laudna obeys Lady Delilah, then she can at last be loved for who she is... right?

Laudna was the most interesting to design so far! She contains design elements of the Hex Maniac from the XY games, but also of Alice's apron from Alice in Wonderland, a pupetteer's strings, and a damaged dress. The puppeteer in this situation obviously being Delilah, I wanted to give the impression that Delilah controls Laudna by having broken her and then stitched her back together to her liking, hence the damaged skirt being sewn back together with red string. Laudna's desire to be joyful and whimsy despite her dark pas s then shown by the colorful Alice-in-Wonderland-like apron she wears over that dress. I even played with the etherealness of Ghost-types by giving Laudna's hair a floating whispy vibes ^^

"Still more fun than scary, right?"

As an undead in the campaign, Laudna obviously has a lot of ghost-types! But unlike the cool and composed ghost Gym Leader Essek who picked and built his team based strategy first, Laudna's team is made of Pokémon she befriended in cemeteries, that are a little bit broken - just like her.

Team breakdown:

- Banette: Laudna's ace, this creepy ghost was born of a child's plush doll that was discarded by its owner. Laudna's story has strong themes of dealing with the feeling of abandonment, so Banette fits her perfectly.

- Mimikyu: another ghost-type. Mimikyu hids its true, horrendous form gimmick by disguise itself into a friendly shape in order to be loved. Very "fun scary" and reflects Laudna's social and joyful nature that hides a dark past, abandonment issues and a desperate need to be loved.

- Trevenant: the Sun Tree. Represents Laudna's ties to Delilah that she can't quite let go of. Who the fuck keeps a Pokémon in its team that is based on the tree you were hanged to??

- Yamask: the Raven Queen's mask! Also yet another undead ghost who mourns it's former life as a human. There is never enough symbolism!

- Umbreon: Laudna's Umbreon symbolizes her connection to Imogen, who has an Espeon.

- Gengar: Last but not least, Laudna's Gengar also showcases her connection to Imogen, being the counterpart to Imogen's Clefairy.

Critical Role × Pokémon AU : Meet Beau, the fiery Fighting-type Gym apprentice!

Alright guys here is Pokémon!Beau's team! Breakdown further down. Fun fact I really struggled to give her a catchphrase because every single one of her one-liners involve swearing.

In this AU, Beau is an apprentice at the Cobalt Soul Gym, dreaming of one day inheriting the title of gym leader from her strict but beloved mentor, Dairon. The latter, sensing Beau needs to grow, sent her on an adventure to discover the world and do some soul-searching (and learn to control her temper).

In battle, Beau uses mostly Fighting-types, and her strategy often resolves around one word: BONK. However, she is smarter than she looks and will resort to strategy moves such as Calm Mind and Detect if needed.

Team breakdown:

- Lucario: This blue Fighting-type with a pure heart and the capacity to sense other people's auras was made to be Beau's ace. He uses Bone Rush to strike targets with a long bone that is reminiscent of Beau's bo stick.

- Medicham: this Fighting/Psychic type is the ultimate Monk Pokémon. Medicham's Ability, Pure Power, allow her to double the power of her physical attack, much like a Monk using Ki energy to increase the power of their strike. Medicham also uses elemental strikes like Ice Punch and Thunder Punch, giving the impression of a martial artist infusing magic in its punched. As the most Monk-like Pokémon in Beau's party, Medicham symbolizes Beau's aspirarion to become a proper member of the Colbalt Soul.

- Scrafty: Like Medicham, Scrafty is a Fighting type and an excellent all-rounder due to its capacity to learn moves of many types such as Ice Punch and Thunder Punch. However, the similarities stop here. If Medicham was Beau's desire to become a Colbalt Soul gym leader, then Scrafty is what keeps her from doing so. This Fighting/Dark type Pokémon is a thug and a bit of a bastard, symbolizing Beau's rebellious nature, her temper, and her negative relationship with authority.

- Hitmontop: An agile blue Fighting-type which focuses on martial art. Not much to say here.

- Jolteon: Being the party's Speedster, Beau needed at least on Pokémon entirely focused on Speed. This is why Jolteon is here: he symbolizes her physical speed, as well her speed of thought - Beau is pretty sharp! I also wanted her to have Jolteon specifically because he's an Electric type and I think Beau would have at least one of those. Idk, ut just matches her vibe.

- Blipbug: last but not least, Blipbug. If every other team member represents Beau's physical prowess, Blipbug is her mind. This clever little Bug/Psychic pokemon is a constant collector of information, like its master. Just as Beau is incredibly observant, Blipbug has the ability Compound Eyes, increasing its Accuracy with its very good eyes. He is, literally, a bookworm.

"Show me something impressive."

Critical Role Pokémon!AU : Meet Essek, the Ghost-type Gym Leader!

Essek is an academic who is so cold and aloof he feels like a ghost - hence, perhaps, why he prefers the company of Ghost Types. Outside of his duties as a Gym Leader, he is a scientist, and he would do anything to further his research on Pokémon.

In combat, Essek favors status moves and well-planned strategies, making best use of moves like Will-O-Wisp and Trick Room. He tends to favor Pokémon with a high Special Attack.

Team Breakdown:

- Hisuian Zoroark : a purple Ghost-Normal type, making him an excellent all-rounder since he only has one weakness. Zoroark are known for their Talent, Illusion, which allow them to shapeshift into another Pokémon to trick their enemy. Essek being a master deceiver, this suits him well. Also, he'd have a shiny Pokémon because he's a rich bastard like that.

- Mismagius: a Ghost-type with a long flowing mantle like Essek does in the campaign, and access to solid status moves like Will-O-Wisp and a good special attack.

- Chandelure: As the Candelabrum Pokémon, Chandelure symbolizes Essek's elegance and his luxurious taste: Candelabra are only found in castles and ballrooms. Mostly for the aesthetic, but Chandelure is also an excellent Pokémon with a rare Fire-Ghost typing and excellent Special Attack.

- Drifblim. Look at him. LOOK AT HIM. He's purple, he floats, and he even has a little tuft of white hair! What was I supposed to do, not include him???

- Mega-Sableye. As a Ghost/Dark type with access to all the "evil asshole" moves like Foul Play and Thief, Sableye is perfectly fit to be Essek's ace. And what better for the man who stole his country's most sacred rock than a Pokemon who eats gems? With his myriad of status moves and the high defense granted by his Mega-Evolution, Mega-Sableye can simply burn or poison his adversaries and wait slowly for their death, or paralyze them before finishing them of with Shadow Ball or Foul Play.

- Umbreon. "But if Essek is a Ghost-type specialist, why does he have a Dark-type", you're asking? Because people change. Umbreon isn't his specialty, but he is a Pokémon that can only evolve through maxed friendship. If Ghost was Essek's coldness and aloof exterior, then Umbreon is Essek's connection to The Mighty Nein, and how it changed him for the better.

Pokémon and the Standard Model: a whole bunch of fakemon

Do you remember Plusle and Minun, the cute electric-type rabbits of Gen 3, based on positive and negative charges... or more physically, on protons and electrons? Do you ever want to see more Pokémon with physical properties? Well good, because I present you the Standard Model, Pokémon version! (...or at least a small part of it!)

Posipi and Negapi (Plusle and Minun)

Type: Electric

Talents: Plus and Minus

A reminder of the basics: Plusle and Minun, the two cannon pikaclones based on the proton and the electron. Much like positive and Negative charges attract, Plusle and Minun's Talents Plus and Minus strenthen their Special Attack whenever another Pokémon of the opposite talent appears on the field.

(In the rest of this essay post, I will refer to them using their French names, Posipi and Negapi, simply so I have an excuse to name all the other by "...-pi" too. Sidenote: Posipi, Negapi and all the fakemon presented here are named the Lapi.)

The electromagnetic forces make two charged objects interact using photons, and in the same way, Posipi and Negapi communicate by using like signals. By little flashes of light, the can see if they'll get along, get into fight, or even start hitting on each other.

Neutrapi

Type: Normal

Talent: Lightning Rod

Neutrapi, the Neutron Pokémon. Due to his absense of charge, he is a Normal type and is unaffected by the electromagnetic force, leading to its Talent being Lightning Rod, the ability to cancel all Electric attacks. Like his cousins Posipi and Negapi, he remains pretty common in the wild.

Anti-Posipi and anti-Negapi

Type: Electric

Talents: Minus and Plus

These alternate forms of Posipi and Negapi are based on antimatter! Respectively, this oddly coloured Posipi is the antiproton pokémon, and this Negapi is the positron pokémon. They do not hold much difference from their counterparts other than their Talents obviously being inverted (anti-Posipi getting Minus and anti-Negapi getting Plus). They can be found in alternate universes like the one you visit in the USUM games (Another idea would be the Distortion World if Giratina wasn't alone there).

Darkapi

Type: Dark

Talent: ?

Darkapi, the Dark Matter Pokémon. It does not exist anywhere on the Pokéworld: to find it, you will have to visit outer space. It can turn "off" the turquoise lights on his cheeks and tail, making them effectively invisible if they are in a place dark enough.

Gravipi

Type: Ghost

Talent: Levitate

Last but not least, Gravipi, the pokémon based on a particle whose existence hasn't even been proven yet: the graviton! This mysterious little bunny is so hard to find that it has acquired the status of legendary.

How to find Gravipi:

Now that we have imagined all these cute and weird rabbits, imagine a place that studies them: the Lapi Lab. Its owner would really like to see them all, and will only start talking to you about Gravipi once you've found all the other existing Lapi - and even she herself does not really know then answer.

Then, one day, she decides as a scientist to perform a gravity exeriment known as the Pound-Rebka experiment: an experiment supposed to give out infinie amounts of energy if you keep doing it, thus violating the laws of energy conservation. Except, the truth is that it fails because of a property of gravity, called the equivalence principle. But let us pretend our friend the scientist doesn't know that.

So, our friend the scientist tests the experiment. It fails, the energy is conserved. Not understanding why, she tries again with better technology and higher energy levels involved... but the Pound-Recka experiment still fails, the energy is conserved.

She tries again, this time using a huge machine the size of a room, in which she places the needed items. This time, (if the experiment worked) there is no way it would fail no way it would fail, the margin of error is neary zero, the levels of energy involved are huge, the technology is unfallible.

She burst into the room to see if it worked... The items of the experiment are untouched. The energy is still conserved. And in the middle of the room, there is Gravipi.
