@shinigamidust
Some of the Death Note's rules are really funny if you think of them as clarifications for users, necessary fixes to address exploits, or bugs that the Shinigami king isn't going to fix.
If a Death Note owner accidentally misspells a person's name four times, that person will be free from being killed by the Death Note. -> patch to fix exploit where users would attempt to brute force killing someone by writing every possible name in the Death Note
However, if the Death Note owner intentionally misspells the name four times, the owner will die. -> Patch fix to stop exploit where users would try to grant themselves immunity
The person whose name was misspelled four times on purpose will not be free of death by a Death Note. -> Necessary clarification because users thought they could grant someone else immunity
If the same name is written in two or more Death Notes within 0.06 seconds, the entry is regarded as simultaneous; the Death Notes will not take effect and the individual will not die. -> Rare bug related to When the same name is written in two or more Death Notes, the Note which was used first will take effect, regardless of the time of death. Root cause is server requests first check if the same existing request was already made. Simultaneous requests assume the other request is valid and delete themselves. Will Not Fix. Bug is rare and fixing it could result in new exploits related to repeatedly writing a person's name in the Death Note.
When you write multiple names in the Death Note and then write down one cause of death within 40 seconds of writing the first victim's name, the cause will take effect for all the written names. Also, after writing the cause of death, even if the conditions of death are written within six minutes and 40 seconds in the human world, the conditions will apply only to the victims for whom they are possible. Those for whom the conditions are not possible will simply die from the specified cause. -> Code bug caused by undefined and ambiguous input syntax. Will Not Fix.
Once the victim's name, cause of death, and conditions of death have been written down in the Death Note, the death will take place even if that Death Note, or the part of the note used, is destroyed before the stated time of death. -> Clarification to stop users from pointlessly destroying the Death Note
The Death Note will not affect those less than 780 days old. -> A patch added to get around various cultural arguments related to when something is considered "Human"
You cannot kill humans who are more than 124 years of age with the Death Note. -> Added in reference to a Shinigami meme
You cannot kill humans with less than 12 minutes of life left (in human calculations). -> Patch that addresses undefined behavior from edge cases where the victim dies naturally before the Death Note can normally take effect or during the window the user can write additional details to the cause of death.
misa amane’s determination to devote herself to something just to make her life worth outliving its natural end - her unbreakable spine - her loveless relationship - the career she throws away - light yagami, the only thing that gives her any meaning - kiyomi taking that from her - misa’s canonical suicide - misa’s cavalier attitude towards her own life - taking the Eye deal twice - girl who only cracks when light is found dead outside the yellow box warehouse - girl that not even L could break - survived the murder of her parents - survived the stalker - survived L Lawliet - survived, survived, survived, Misa Amane who ends it all when her purpose in life is found dead in a ditch - Misa Amane never gets married. her greatest ambition in life was to become light yagami’s wife. she tells him that all she wants is to be useful to him but as a caveat he has to date her. she doesn’t believe in kira as much as she believes that light is her personal salvation. Misa Amane strongarms him into becoming her boyfriend and at some point during the timeskip, convinces herself that he loves her back. Misa Amane gives up the notebook. She gives up her memories. She gives up 75% of her lifespan. She dies amnesiac and falling, falling, falling, because in the end Misa Amane does not survive herself.
i imagine L to be more touch starved and needy rather than hesitant and nervous. he has watched the world from afar for all his life and has seen people getting something he never thought he was allowed to. he's not oblivious. he's deprived. so once he's faced with the opportunity, i can't see him be the kind to think "am i doing this wrong? is this how people do it, maybe I shouldn't..." but more like, "this is my only opportunity and I have to make the most of it. I need to experience all that i've been missing, now or never"
still thinking about that bit in htr where ohba says if soichiro had lived then light wouldn’t be able to kill him and so the 13 day rule would be disproven… can you imagine. can you imagine looking your child in the eye and knowing that 1) he is the mass murderer you have been chasing for five years 2) the only reason you’ve caught him is because he loved you too much
thinking about it further i think light's thing is that whenever he does feel guilt it's about himself. i just killed two people… me… what do i do… it's never about his victims. from the start it's about light yagami, golden boy and perfect son, who has just had that status pulled under him and has to get it back somehow. thinking about when he passes by the bullies in his classroom and wonders if he should kill them while not sparing a glance or kind word for their victim slumped dejectedly on the table. i think he does feel bad about being kira, i think at some points he even wants to stop, but he really truly genuinely hates the people he's killing. he doesn't feel guilty about murdering them. he feels guilty about being a murderer.
lesbianism would have saved misa and rem. homosexuality would have made light and L die faster.
L: weird trans man
Mello: ungenderable nonbinary who everyone at the goth club has a crush on (but watch out)
Matt: weird GAMER trans man (subspecies of weird trans man)
Near: nobahdy knows. won’t tell you their pronouns. u have to guess
Wedy: high fashion + vintage loving trans woman who looks perfect all the time and MIGHT be wearing a wig. she might be wearing several wigs.
I feel like vomiting some no context headcanons out into the internet so here’s what ‘flavour of trans’ I think some of my favourite Death Note characters are most likely to be
Light Yagami: Definitely a girl, I’ve seen people headcanon transmasc Light but I don’t buy it. There’s no way Light would have that kind of self reflection before the events of Death Note were set in motion. Also L and Misa would have an unspoken contest to see who can crack her egg first, and if she transitioned her name would be Luna (it’s another unique reading of the 月 kanji)
L Lawliet: Honestly I think L is the most ‘trans in every direction’ character ever but I choose to headcanon him as ftm for self indulgent projection reasons and also because the concept of straight t4t lawlight is amusing to me (shoutout to this fanfic for indoctrinating me). They definitely could be lesbians though
Misa Amane: I think Misa could be genderfluid but would never tell anyone except for Rem. I don’t think she’d want to change her pronouns but she’s the type of person who would subtly express her presentation through fashion in ways that are still generally read as feminine from an outside perspective but give herself gender euphoria. Maybe she would socially transition when she’s older and retired from being an idol
Kiyomi Takada: I went out for a walk the other day and found myself contemplating trans Takada the whole time for some reason and pretty much created a whole scenario in my head where she’s a trans woman and Light is also a trans woman, but Light is closeted and Takada is stealth so they’re both ‘hiding’ in different ways and through that they’re able to form a genuine connection that starts pre-timeskip but gets cut short by Misa until they’re able to pick up where they left off 5 years later. Like when they’re passing notes it’s half about Kira stuff and half about gender stuff— I don’t know the idea is just really interesting to me. I’m a guy so I don’t know if I could faithfully write something like that myself but please please PLEASE someone steal this idea
Teru Mikami: Probably non-binary but they have a job so they don’t really care about that right now.
some additions (featuring some stuff from another note) because I can’t sleep
Mihael Keehl: I think Mello would be bigender and would say his pronouns don’t matter either way but you bet your ass she’ll be judging you if she thinks you’re using he/him too often. Might even confront you about it. They’re also one of the few characters I could picture coming out before the events of Death Note, maybe even during their time in Wammy’s House
Nate River: Like L, I think Near could also be trans in any direction but personally I feel inclined to think of them as transfem and nonbinary. I also think they would probably end up on estrogen at some point down the line, but maybe not during or immediately after the Kira investigation because it’s just not their first priority
Naomi Misora: I think transmasc Misora would be interesting particularly in the context of him staying in the closet for the sake of his relationship with Raye Penber— a decision that Beyond Birthday would indirectly have him questioning during LABB— but also if Light killed him while he was still in the closet that would be even more tragic than it was in canon and maybe I’d cry about it
Beyond Birthday: Listen I know how bad this sounds but it would be extremely funny if he was transmasc. Like. Literally the peak of ‘diversity win! The worst person you know is trans’ energy.
light is transfem because [insert 14k-and-counting essay that boils down to “if you do not transition you remain stuck in the comfort of static and inevitably rot and die”]. near and beyond are transfem because they’ve both spent their entire lives molding themselves after someone they’re really not like at all. mello is transfem because no matter how much she tries to live her life society keeps saying she isn’t good enough, doesn’t measure up to an impossible standard. L is transfem because look at her

cannibals
Not that I wholeheartedly believe he was evil.
Okay so here’s a concept: Wammy’s House wasn’t an orphanage until Wammy met L. It started out as a boarding school for geniuses, and then one day Wammy found L, who could blow all the other kids out of the water, who refused to give Wammy his name, who had no parents. Wammy brought L to his school and adopted him as soon as he could get him to agree to it. And before L was even old enough to vote, he became the greatest detective in the world. Eventually they realized L would need a successor after he died, and Wammy’s House could easily be altered to fit that purpose. Find geniuses and give them an education just like before, encourage them to be interested in investigation, teach them detective work if they’re willing, and whoever is best suited gets to be L’s successor. Just one problem– no one with a family, no one with any real connections, no one with an identity, really, could ever become L. So Wammy’s House became an orphanage.
