well not just that pierce also forgot about cassius's queerness in general... cause literally it is only ever seen as a joke and has yet to be explored genuinely outside of characters joking about them being as close as they are. like pierce seriously just said "yeah hes bi maybe" and thought that that was enough activism for the day, when he is never shown experiencing clear cut, non-vague attraction to another man, and even his attraction to women is idealized. like you have the perfect recipe for a character with internalized homophobia, a way to explore what happens if a favorite son of a high ranking gold house was attracted to men, and to actually unpack how the society views queerness, but executing that is too far apparently. Apparently.

it's the way Cassius has never been shown to emotionally connect with any of the women he's supposedly in love with for me. what does he even like about Virginia or Aurae? it's basically never shown or explained. but he does connect with Darrow deeply and emotionally.

but we give more benefit of the doubt to heterosexual pairings and conclude that they just must be in love. heterosexual pairs rarely require actual justification; the fact that it's heterosexual is justification enough. meanwhile you point to how Darrow and Cassius have a tangible, deep homosocial bond and people scoff and say they're just good friends. homosexual pairings require nothing short of the characters fucking on page to be believable, but a man and a woman can stand in a room together and we all just nod and conclude they're madly in love . WHATEVERRRRRR

the issue is that admitting that there is genuinely nothing behind cassius's feelings for aurae and virginia would also require PB admitting that he wrote better emotional romantic and sexual chemistry between darrow and cassius than even darrow and virginia
