I'm sure people have already said this but Supergirl (2026) is as much an origin story as it is a Superhero movie. That's why Kara's "different" from the comics (she's not actually different) but the point is, she's going through a character arc. This movie not only acts as a homage to supergirl fans, but it also acts as an introduction to new fans first being introduced to Supergirl/Kara Zor-el. That's why Kara explains her backstory, that's why Kara has a character arc where she has to find herself and her purpose in life.

I actually love how much of the movie tecnichally she isn't doing superhero stuff...she's just out to save her dog (extremely relatable) and some brat just decided to be annoying and tag along (relatable too)

I liked the supergirl movie!! I like the different tones the dcu has. I think it was better than the WoT comic, but I also have been on record of thinking WoT is just okay.

My favourite parts (no spoilers), in no order:

krem taking the food from wherever he goes (a good bit, i found it funny)

RUTHYE--her actress did a great job I actually liked her this time (I did not in the comic, even when they weren't significantly different)

the way they carried over the broader theme of hope from Superman but showed a different angle of it

that kara was actually the main character!! (whereas in the comic I would say that's ruthye. I would argue they are at least both duo protagonists in both though)

overall 8/10. I think you should all go see it

ruthye comes to earth to stay with kara for the first time and when clark sees them together he’s genuinely convinced there’s some sort of relation he doesn’t know about because they’re so *alike*. and not in the conventional sense that they have similar mannerisms or behaviours, those couldn’t be more different. but in the sense that their *souls* are intertwined, an emotional bond shared between two girls so deeply that from that moment, clark realises that they are truly and purely platonic soulmates. and that realisation has him *so* giddy, because now he basically gets two sisters for the price of one <3

It's genuinely bizzare to me, how much merch I see for the supergirl movie that's lobo and krypto, when the leads of the film are ruthye and kara. They're both amazing characters and I'm genuinely mad that there's barely any merch for ruthye.

Not gonna lie, when Kara stopped Ruthye from killing that guy, I was a little confused, mostly because Kara had definitely just killed a ton of guys literally seconds ago and now she draws the line at the guy in charge? Of course then it became clear as the scene continued on that Kara never cared about whether this guy lived or died. It was Ruthye she was trying to save. But that was true the whole movie, wasn't it? And when she stopped Ruthye from becoming a killer, only to take on the burden herself because that was the kindest thing Kara could have done in that moment? Oof. That hit hard. It was such an emotionally satisfying scene on so many levels. I loved it.

Also The Middle cover in the fight scene was awesome people are just mean or they don't see the vision. But I DO. I SEE THE VISION.

(feminist) thoughts on kara and ruthye's back-and-forth on the 'ruination' of spirits, souls, and hearts. ruthye and kara are resting in a room, and unbeknownst to them, the couple downstairs is ready to trade them to traffickers (two girls for one). kara shares her past, telling ruthye that clark, he's not 'like them'--- he's not ruined, not broken or tainted like she is, like how ruthye is. and ruthye's reaction to that is visible; she comes from a place of safety, only recently torn away from her by traffickers that exploit girls and women. she is new to this notion of taintedness, of brokenness. it's hard not to frame that as a metaphor for virginity, in some way: clark is hopeful, he is safe, he is a man. kara and ruthye have both been torn away from something, and with that, something has been torn from them, as young girls.

i love how this theme recurs throughout the film, with ruthye begging kara to let her kill krem: "i'm ruined anyways". and in that moment, kara realises what she's, unknowingly, dropped onto ruthye; the thought that ruthye, in having something (her family, in this case) torn from her without her consent, is forever adulterated, tarnished. the way that when women are sexually assaulted, they are adulterated by society. so kara is quick to fight that, realizing the weight of her words. i think the power in this sort of feminist narrative is kara's understanding that she is unintentionally treating ruthye as she treated herself, and finally seeing the flaws in those self-destructive modes of thought. similar to how all women must unlearn misogyny in order to love ourselves.

in the end, the two of them are not ruined. their bodies have seen pain and violence, and they themselves have enacted pain and violence, but that doesn't mean that either of them are sullied or irredeemable, or have some kind of permanent darkness within them. neither are women who have been assaulted or trafficked. supergirl 2026 discerns these concepts in a gentle but wonderfully nuanced way, and i absolutely adored it.

I understand why some people think Kara killing Krem at the end invalidated what she spent the whole movie telling Ruthye—but hear me out

Krem didn't deserve to live. He was a pedophile, a murderer, and a sex trafficker

Kara Zor-El knew that he shouldn't be allowed to live bc he'd just keep doing what he was doing

But does her murdering him in place of Ruthye invalidate her teaching Ruthye "murder is wrong"?

It was "dont let your grief and rage consume you"

If Ruthye had murdered Krem in her grief and anger it would've consumed her. Kara didnt want her to live with that. She sacrificed a part of herself to kill Krem, so Ruthye wouldn't have to be the one who did it

Yes, Krem was a piece of shit who deserved to die

But that doesn't mean the 13 yr old girl whose entirely family was murdered should've been the one to kill him. Lets not put that on her to do. She shouldn't have to. Kara knew that, its why she did it instead

Just got back from supergirl and just one of the many things I loved about it was the way Kara said this man needs to die so he can’t hurt anyone else but I can’t let you do it out of revenge. I can’t let that weigh on your heart for the rest of your life when it’s already so heavy. Idk I’m just insane for the idea of that being how she’s a hero—telling someone you don’t have to carry this weight on your shoulders you don’t have to have this blood on your hands I will do it for you. I will live with knowing I’ve done something terrible as long as it means you don’t have to.

Kara who saw her parents wither away. Kara who carries the grief of an entire planet. Kara who doesn't share that grief with her cousin, because she thinks he could never understand. Kara who holds Krypto like her heart, because he is the only piece of her Krypton that is still alive. Kara who will tarnish her soul so Ruthye doesn't have to. Kara who has every reason to scream, cry and break things, but chooses to stay and make Earth her home because she also has many reasons to find again the happiness she lost. That is a Kara that I love.

Look I don't think Supergirl (2026) is secretly a perfect masterpiece or anything (I personally thought it was like. a 6/10 fun time) but I do think it's wild that Tumblr isn't going crazy for it because this Kara is one coattailed suit away from being a Tumblr sexyman. she is the flawed messy female character people have supposedly been clamouring for. she's the popular archetype of a gruff self-destructive alcoholic middle-aged man begrudgingly having to look after a kid and growing fond of them but genderswapped and also 23. she's allowed to be visibly messy and kind of gross and her hair is constantly all over the place and she literally cries, screams, throws up, and pisses onscreen. she's caustic and mean and puts up an act of carelessness but has a heart of gold. she's heavily traumatised and coping with it terribly. if anything happens to her dog she will kill everyone in this room and then herself. she spends most of the movie in a trench coat and baggy band T-shirt. she gets into bar brawls and breaks a guy's hand. she is Going Through It 24/7 and looks the part. she stabs a guy in the throat. how is everyone else not obsessed with her.
