Green Is A Nonverbal Autistic Theory - by me!
Autism Spectrum Disorder.
A unique disorder that differs for everyone diagnosed with it. However, there are occasionally notable developmental changes in people with autism. Some may be more sensitive to certain senses, others struggle more with properly communicating their emotions with others. This is where the case of nonverbal autism comes in.
Nonverbal autism is a term used for people that have been diagnosed with autism that often avoid using verbal communication, instead using other methods of expression.
Now, as someone that is in fact diagnosed as autistic, I have plenty of experience in living with this disorder. Yet, I couldn’t help but notice something familiar about Green.
Signs That Point To Green Being On The Spectrum
A big part of being on the spectrum is an increased sensitivity to sensory stimuli, like loud noises, bright lights, certain textures, etc. We do actually see Green have what appeared as almost a sensory overload in Flower Castle.
In the scene, Orange, Susie and Ralsei are arguing over whether or not Orange was being bullied. Throughout the scene, Green is constantly being called to do something about the issue. Eventually, Green gets disappointed by all the fighting, and becomes unresponsive for a bit. This is called a sensory shutdown, where the autistic person experiences an involuntary freeze response in their nervous system due to a severe sensory or emotional overload. This freeze response is what Green is experiencing in this scene.
Stimming is another key feature of being autistic that shows excitement or being overwhelmed. We do actually see an example of this in Yellow and Blue’s battle. In any of the case trial acts, if Green is accused, they do noticeably stim by gently pushing their fingers against each other.
Throughout the acts, there may be a lot of tension going on that causes Green to appear so nervous when accused. Though this may be a cartoony way to show bashfulness, it definitely looks like stimming to me.
Special Interests/Focuses
Anyone on the spectrum has at least one thing they really enjoy and focus more on compared to most things.
Green themself does have a special interest: cooking. Throughout the Dark World there are a total of 4 cafes they are in charge of, and it was their dream to be a chef and learn more about the culinary arts.
What Would Be The Correct Autism Severity Level?
Autism is officially classified on a severity scale, based on the severity of an individual’s autism and how much help they need in their everyday lives.
Level 1 - Needs the least amount of help. Has trouble understanding social rules, appearance of some stress during transitions, rigid or inflexible behavior.
Level 2 - Atypical social behavior, high interest in specific topics, distress when faced with change.
Level 3 - Needs the most amount of help. Severe communication deficits, repetitive behaviors, extreme distress when switching tasks.
There are lots of mixed signals on which severity level Green is on, but, I would say it’s a mix of all of them. They’re capable of functioning normally by themself, they don’t communicate using speech, and enjoy the simplicity of making meals for friends.
In conclusion: Green is in fact a nonverbal autistic character. Change my fucking mind.
