It’s five letters!! i don’t understand, y’all will write thousand word metas and say Jack Zimmermann and William Poindexter 2948392927 times but no one wants to use Ngozi’s name.

listen man. she’s a creator. someone’s first time seeing anything about Check Please may be because you use the name of the creator. so use her name! it’s so easy! it was picked out for her! it represents her! it’s a beautiful name!

Even as far as affectionate fan nicknames for the creator go it still feels more like people saying “your ethnic, non-western name is not worthy of the time and respect it takes for me to learn it so I’m going to shorten it to my preference without your permission” it happens all the got damb time to people with beautiful, meaningful, lovingly chosen names.

And I know that if you are not affording that small amount of dignity and respect to the creator of something you love you absolutely aren’t doing it for the kid in your English class with a four syllable name.

It’s pretty damn transparent too.

as a person with a Foreign Name™ it’s incredibly rude to me when people shorten/change my name. it’s disrespectful to me and disrespectful to my cultural heritage. if someone shortens my name, it feels to me like you don’t care enough about me to learn it. my name is who i am.

i’m not ngozi, of course, so i can’t say she feels the same for sure. but i CAN say that names of color are HIGHLY political and sensitive in western/american/etc contexts. i know this sounds like we’re making a fuss over something small, but i promise you that this isn’t small. names are significant.

I noticed this parallel this evening, and @nurseydcx and I had some thoughts:

from her: that’s a good parallel where both instances jack has to make a choice and like. he continually chooses to move forward and choose things that are unfamiliar but that he wants (he won’t go back to parse) and that he’s willing to put things on the line for

so yeah, in both instances Jack has a pretty blond boy asking him to keep him, and in both instances Jack makes a pivotal character choice

with parse, to kiss, to stay, means regressing to familiarity, accepting the fate set for him in the QMJHL, staying with parse and staying the same as he has been

not to kiss means to move forward, move on, face unfamiliar territory where he tells parse to leave and not come back, unfamiliar territory where his teenage best friend et cetera isn’t part of his life, and he chooses that

with bitty, not to kiss means to stay in the closet where things are on edge but familiar, to stay out of a spotlight focused on his private life, to continue living as he has in something familiar and safe

to kiss bitty means to take possibly the biggest risk of his life, to thrust himself deliberately and knowingly into a hyper-focused spotlight on him and his loved ones, to take on sheer terror for the sake of celebration and, overall, love, and he chooses that

the dynamics of nursey and dex is really nuanced because. there's a large amount of fanon content we've created that stabilizes and excuses a lot of the vaguely offensive things dex have said, which i think is good! but it's important to realize that he still has a lot of development to undergo before i think his canon character is actually deserving of nursey.
