No one has to teach us to draw, but someone has to give us the materials we need. On Tuesday I brought index cards and tiny markers to the Big Gym and sat in the corner and started drawing. The 4K kids came over and started doing the same thing. And there is no drawing without a story. You could ask any one of these kids about their drawing and what you would get back would be worth writing down. Dear Students,

Here is the Hantu we drew today.  Does she look AT ALL familiar? What if you added two Willie Nelson style braids and a set of keys and pens on a lanyard around her neck?

Materials:

5.5x8.5 cardstock paper

Yellow, Orange and Blue color pencils

Uniball pen

At least 20 minutes and up to 90 minutes (for psychedelic extra credit)

Step 1)

With yellow pencil draw your frame

Put on 3 minute song

Turn down lights if possible

Start music and do a three minute drawing of Devil Grandma. You can’t see the bottom of her legs in this photo but in your drawing you will have to include them along with her Devil Grandma Feet (what will they look like?

Step 2)

REPEAT ALL OF THE ABOVE but now use your orange pencil and draw right on top of that previous drawing -IMPORTANT CHANGE! ALERT! this time begin drawing your figure from the feet up.

Step 3) REPEAT ALL OF THE ABOVE using your blue pencil, drawing right on top of the previous two drawings, and beginning anywhere you like

Make sure you’ve drawn the orange and the blue frame–

Step 4) Take your Uniball pen and ink it in– spend as much time on it as you think it needs.

DIG THIS: You can do this with any photo you like for extra credit.

This comic was made by request from a National Treasure named MK Czerwiec, aka “Comics Nurse”

MK Czerwiec RN, MA is a nurse who uses comics to contemplate the complexities of illness and caregiving.

She is the Artist-in-Residence at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine and a Senior Fellow of the George Washington School of Nursing Center for Health Policy & Media Engagement. MK has been making comics under the pseudonym Comic Nurse since 2000. She co-runs GraphicMedicine.org, a website devoted to the intersection of comics and health.

My kids have obsessions. Deep, drawn-out obsessions. And sometimes, as with my 5-year-old and Kraftwerk, we get so far into the obsession that I can’t even

How do kids get inspired? Or obsessed?  And as "grown ups" how can we find that level of interest and passion in something?

I never post .GIFs, but I have to make one exception here. These are images from  “Pinball Number Count”, a very funky segment of 1970s Sesame Street. It debuted in 1977 and was still very much around when I was young. It’s a lovely slice of pure Seventies.

The vocals were done by the Pointer Sisters.
