I feel like people misunderstand the title of Mo Dao Zu Shi, or of what Wei Wuxian does as “demonic cultivation” (mo dao). It’s not. It is, however, what most people in canon THINK he’s doing

Mo dao messes with the cycle of reincarnation, which is why the Yiling Patriarch becomes so reviled. The term mo dao is actually used only ONCE in the novel - when Wei Wuxian notes that people called him “the grandmaster of demonic cultivation”

It uses living humans, extracts qi out of them, and involves the destruction of golden cores, brainwashing, and effectively vampiring living beings for the sake of power. It doesn’t use ambient resentment, it creates it by harming others.

The reason we’re continuously told (by people who know nothing of Wei Wuxian’s path) that he’s at risk of going insane is because that’s what mo dao does. It warps the mind and body because the source of resentment is within the user

Wei Wuxian calls his cultivation “the ghostly path” or “ghost cultivation” (gui dao). Hell, the only other person shown to match his expertise on the subject - Xue Yang - also calls it gui dao. Xue Yang !! He’d be delighted to call his actions demonic !! If he’s insisting on calling it “ghostly”, then that tells us that the difference matters

So what is gui dao ? First of all, we know that it doesn’t mind-control people as a baseline - that’s why Wei Wuxian ended up dying the first go around. We know that it utilises pre-existing resentful energy in the world to direct the dead

We know, also, that it requires a certain level of understanding of the dead. One of the spells Wei Wuxian creates is literally named Empathy.

We know that the power source is usually external (the Burial Mounds, the Stygian Tiger Seal), and that it, most importantly, doesn’t create demons. It creates ghosts and fierce corpses. And because of this, it likely doesn’t prevent reincarnation.

Why is the distinction important ? Because the former is what mo dao does. It creates mo.

We’re told the difference - very intentionally - in one of the earliest parts of the story, when Lan Qiren asks Wei Wuxian the difference between gui (ghosts) and mo (demons) and yao, and gets the correct answer

There’s foreshadowing littered all across the earlier chapters, actually. I might make a post on that some day

How each of the characters are when drunk this is what we came up with:

Lan Qiren: the reason for the no alcohol rule in the recesses, he got drunk during a conference in gusu, and decided it would be fun to strip/helicopter on tables (if you know what i mean by helicoptering) he forgets about what ever happened, the former sect leader for nie, plus jiang fengmian, jin guanshan and Wen rouhan all know and witnessed this incident and its a hidden secret that was whispered about. Qiren is non the wiser.

Lan Xichen: giggly, hes a giggly bitch, finds everything hilarious. Like all lans, he doesnt remember ever being drunk, mingjue does, as it was him who got Xichen drunk the first time.

Jin Guanyao: cannit lie for shit. You want the truth about his actions, get him drunk. While sober he lies and manipulates, drunk hes confessing everything from murdering nie mingjue to stepping on a cats tsil on accident when he was like 2 years old.

Wen Ning ( before death) : crybaby, he cries over the littlest thing.

Wen Qing (before death): can hold her drink. Also knows the best hangover cures.

Nie mingjue: wants to fight everything. Will draw BaXia on you

Jiang Cheng: also wants to fight but backs down if challenged

Lan Yuan: like his dad, Hanguang Jun hes chaos incarnate. With lan jingyi an instigator and encourager

Jin Ling: tries to out drink everyone (dante hells belles style) fails and passes out

Nie hiusang: a more coherant giggly bitch, like Xichen but able to form sentences.

Wei Ying: we know what hes like.

Lan Zhan: same thing we know how he is, lan yuan takes after him.

Jin Zixuan: epitome of chivalry, Jiang yanli finds it hilariously sweet.

Jiang Yanli: cooks. She just over bakes and burns things because she forgets in her drunken stupor.

The Brain of Morbius

The TARDIS is dragged off course by outside forces to the planet Karn. The Doctor and Sarah face danger on two fronts: the Sisterhood of Karn, who fear that the Doctor and Sarah have been sent to steal their Elixir of Life, and insane neurosurgeon Solon, who plans to use the Doctor's head as the final part of a new body for the dismembered renegade Time Lord Morbius.

No, not THAT Morbius, put the memes down. Ever wanted to see a Doctor Who take on Frankenstein? This is the story for you. We've got the misshappen patchwork creature, the crazed scientist who made it, the simple-minded assistant, the creature going on a rampage... But it also goes into wilder, more surreal territory as we dabble in science mistaken for magic again with the Sisterhood, and, unlike Frankenstein, the creature in question is immediately out for revenge, not because it can't mingle with people, but because all that's left of Morbius following his (undoubtedly long-winded and painful) execution at the hands of the Sisterhood and the Time Lords is the titular brain, and he is justifiably annoyed at the state he's been left in.

Maybe it's just because I re-read Frankenstein last year, but I really liked this one. If it does have any weak links, it's some of the stuff with the Sisterhood and their theatrical rituals. But of course, it all fits together in the end. If you're after a bit of gothic sci-fi horror, give The Brain of Morbius a go. It's only a little under two hours, you've got nothing to lose.
