RENAISSANCE
This is my actual fucking nightmare, Ilya! Then maybe it's time to wake up, yes?
heated rivalry
1.06 — the cottage
Boyfriend is a label that is only necessary in the context of other people. The conversation with his parents starts with Shane’s inability to label who Ilya is to him, but before that moment, it never mattered because no one else could know. They never had to figure out how to introduce each other to people, because it was just between them. And then suddenly, Ilya’s labelling who is in that room: Shane, your family is here, your boyfriend is here. Those words only ever mean something and are only ever necessary to people outside of those labels. Shane and his parents don’t have to name “family” when they talk or are together; they just are. And prior to that moment, Shane and Ilya didn’t need to label who they were to each other—rivals, lovers, boyfriends—because those words are signifiers for other people to understand who they are to each other. Shane and Ilya already know. And Shane struggles with finding the word because it was never necessary before, and he thought it wouldn’t be for years since no one was supposed to know. And then suddenly, he doesn’t have a word, and Ilya names it: lovers. And just as suddenly, Ilya renames it: boyfriend. Because they aren’t hiding, not in front of the two people who matter most to Shane. Suddenly, the label is necessary because it’s no longer a secret thing between the two people who make up that label.

shane putting on his dorky little glasses and reading his military biographies or whatever in bed while ilya is busy like, doing body shots and snorting lines of cocaine off hot women in the club. jacob tierney was like it's soooooo important for you to understand that this is a slut 4 dweeb pairing. it's so vital
