Hello, my name is Shy. In this blog I will be discussing my opinions and criticisms of She-ra and the Princesses of Power, discusses my ideas about the She-ra: the Princess of Power rewrite that I'm planning (which is not a finished project by any means. I'll just be sharing random ideas because it'll be fun, however nothings set in stone) and just random miscellaneous content about She-ra like music headcanons, etc.

I would like to preface I did enjoy the 2018 version of She-ra and loved many of the ideas that were introduced, however I do find the general world building and the original version of the characters, specifically the 1984 comic versions, enjoyable and thought it would be fun to combined the ideas I enjoyed in the 1984 comic and 1985 cartoon with the ones I liked from the reboot.

Important Side Note Regarding the Rewrite: The races, genders, and sexual orientations of the characters introduced in the reboot will be kept. (With the exception of Adora and maybe Sea Hawk whose race will, or may, change)

Guys...it's not victim shaming to call out when Adora does ONE bad thing towards Catra!

Granted, i'm not saying that she didn't have a reason to do what she did. She was a victim to Catra's abuse since they were kids, so it's understandable for her to lash out at her abuser and get angry at her.

What I am saying is that if you guys can say that Catra became an abuser because of the abuse she had to go through from Shadow Weaver, then Adora is no different! She and Catra were raised in the same home as each other, so it's understandable that she would act out this way.

Don't excuse her behavior of throwing Catra out of bed once just to dogpile on criticals for calling her out for this! She is a victim, too, but that doesn't mean that she will always do the right thing!

I, personally, feel as though she shouldn't have interacted with Catra at all since she and her were just bitching and screaming at each other with little to no resolve of the situation. Adora could have done anything else, but she chose to scream at Catra and throw her out of bed.

This is not a post defending Catra! This is not a post victim shaming Adora! This is a post to tell you to stop being so one-sided on the topic and actually listen to criticals who call Adora out for this behavior!

i'll just share my perspective here. i agree that adora throwing catra off the bed wasn't a reasonable thing to do. for me personally, what came off as victim blaming us the fact that the op of that post used this one instance to say that adora would also turn into an abuser. this is completely unfair on adora.

ONE instance of a person losing their temper and doing something wrong doesn't make them an abuser or even toxic. this is the same as people calling glimmer an abuser because she lashed out at adora once. was it wrong of her to do? absolutely. but does it make her an abuser? no.

i do feel like adora's anger was justified in this scenario, but i agree that the best thing to do was to just ignore catra. however, people do not act reasonably under stress.

adora shouldn't use violence on others out of impulse but this is the ONLY time she has done that, and i partly blame it on s5's piss poor writing. everyone was out of character in this season, and that included adora who had previously cut all ties with catra and stopped caring about her but now suddenly wanted catra back. it made no sense for adora and we've all discussed how this just reversed all of her character development.

my point is that people aren't shitting on op for pointing out that adora shouldn't have used physical force on catra. there were indeed better ways to deal with the situation.

we're just irritated because op implied that this was abuse and that it meant that adora would abuse catra in the future.

if adora wanted to hurt catra to get her way, she would have done that years ago. if she was the kind of person to use violence to control people, she would have repeated this behavior. but she didn't. because it was simply a reaction out of frustration and desperation. you can say that it was wrong but you can't say that it makes adora an abuser. THAT'S what comes off as victim blaming.

why Adora is not the right person for Catra TW abuse

 I'm not trying to say that Adora is an abuser, I think she is a victim. What i'm trying to say is that the way she deals with Catra during one moment in season 5 is unhealthy and abusive. 

So we all know that Catra is not a good match for Adora due to the physical and mental abuse she subjects Adora too. 

but not many people talk about how Adora can also be abusive/toxic towards Catra. 

That is a big statement and I would like to say that I don't think that makes Adora the abuser. I still think she is the victim. 

I have heard stories of people who also display abusive behaviour towards their partners either as a reaction to the abuse they have faced or to prevent their partner from doing an action that will lead to them becoming abusive. I heard one story about a person who would start fights with their partner to stop them going out and drinking which would lead to them becoming violent. 

but the thing is the times when Adora acts like this towards Catra she's not responding to Catra's abuse. She is using fear and force to get Catra to do what she wants. 

I'm not referring to the fights the two get into. Because Catra is the one who starts them and Adora is not a fault for fighting back. 

i'm referring to the scene in the season 5 episode "taking control". 

During this episode Adora tries to connect to Catra emotionally. Hoping that she has change. But Catra proves that she hasn't. so Adora throws her off the bed. 

Throwing Catra off the bed is abusive because it's a show of force Adora used to try to get Catra to do what she wants. 

if she was doing this in a dire situation like she does later on in the episode to get catra to remove her chip. I wouldn't be complaining. If force is the only thing that Catra listens to then it's the only thing she listens to.

but in this scene there is no threat. and Catra isn't being abusive she's just acting like a grumpy teenager. And Adora gets mad at her and throws her off the bed. 

this isn't Adora snapping and lashing out. She deliberately uses a show of force to get Catra to do what she wants . 

I say this because of a very small thing Adora does before she throws Catra off the bed. 

Adora checks the door 

It's such a small moment but it says a lot. Adora thought about throwing Catra off the bed; it wasn't a split second decision born out of anger or frustration. 

And Adora knows what she's doing is wrong because she checks the door to make sure Glimmer and Bow aren't here to stop her. 

Catra is a victim of her physically and mentally abusive mother. so Adora is doing this too. Catra because Catra was being a grumpy teenager is fuck up. especially because she knows about the abuse Catra went through. she saw it. 

Adora never get called out for this behaviour so she is going to repeat it again in the future. 

So whenever Catra acts out, Adora is going to deal with it with a show of force. 

Catra above all else needs therapy and she needs someone in her life who will not put up with her shit but also won't use force to get Catra to do what they want unless it's an emergency.

Adora is not that person. 

and Adora deserves someone who won't abuse her.

i just have one thing to say to this.

abuse is usually used to refer to violent or harmful behaviour that is practiced frequently. it’s only abuse if it’s done to someone for an extended period of time.

adora throwing catra off the bed ONCE shouldn’t be considered abuse. sure, it wasn’t a dire situation but after all that catra has put adora through, adora deserves to do at least this. she shouldn’t be expected to put up with abuse until it’s a dire situation (which btw there have been several dire situations prior to this where adora DID put up with catra).

right before this scene, catra was verbally abusing adora - refusing to apologize for her actions or thank adora for saving her life, saying that adora has a hero complex, guilt tripping adora and calling her an idiot for giving catra a second chance, among other things.

adora snapping after years of enduring abuse from catra shouldn’t be considered abuse. that just sounds like a whole lot of victim blaming to me.

I don't think Adora ever abuses catra in the show, her actions in this scene are wrong.

I should have just stuck with toxic and harmful in stead of using the word abusive. I was trying to point out how the idea that catra and adora are perfect for each other is wrong by pointing out how Adora way of dealing with Catra won't help Catra heal. But then again it's not up to adora to fix catra.

i disagree with you that Adora snap in this scene because she check the door to see if the others were watching beacuse she knows that throwing catra off the bed to theaten her into apologizing is wrong. she has time to think about it know it was wrong and went through with it anyway.

Adora is not a bad person for trying to get a apology out for her abuser. but she still in the wrong for the way she when about it, concidering catra past of abuse.

if adora just threw catra of the bed i wouldn't be complaing, but she didn't. she check the door. it's not abuse but it's still wrong and shows that despited what fans of the show think. Adora won't help catra heal. which is what i was trying to say.

Adora is not a bad person for treating catra like this. it's Catra fault that Adora acts like this in the first place.

thank you for responding in a civil manner. but i feel like you’re looking way too much into the “adora glancing at the door” scene. there are several possible explanations for it:

adora already has a lot of guilt around everything, because of the way she’s been taught to believe that she is responsible for everything. especially catra’s actions. she’s been taking responsibility for catra for so long, i think it’s possible that she felt like she was doing something wrong, when she really wasn’t.

adora didn’t want to alert glimmer, bow and entrapta. this was a conflict between her and catra, and she didn’t want them to get involved in it.

orrr there was no reason for her looking at the door. we don’t even know if she was specifically looking at the door, or if she was just looking away from catra out of frustration. that’s what it always seemed like to me, at least.

anyway, if adora always treated catra this way, i would agree that it’s wrong. but this is the only instance where she uses brute force on catra (minus the times she did it as a form of self-defense or while fighting catra on the battlefield). in fact, adora tries to reason with words or just puts up with catra’s abuse pretty much all the time.

“she’s still wrong in the way she went about it, considering catra’s past of abuse”. it’s not like adora didn’t try reasoning with catra. she did everything she could, from gently asking catra to change her mind and do the right thing to yelling at catra for everything she did. nothing was enough to change catra’s mindset so i don’t think adora was going too far by throwing her off the bed. it didn’t even seem to hurt catra that much, she was mostly just shocked.

just because catra was a victim of abuse doesn’t mean she can get away with anything. if she felt justified in physically hurting people, she deserves a taste of her own medicine.

i agree that adora isn’t going to help catra heal. but that’s because she often enables catra’s actions, either out of fear or out of affection. not because of the reasons you stated. one instance of adora losing her temper doesn’t mean she is going to physically hurt catra all the time. there’s more than enough evidence for this in the show. adora is not someone who hurts people to get her own way, that’s a catra thing.

Adora and Catra were raised in the same exact home life as each other, so Adora having some times where she's a toxic friend isn't completely out of character

granted, the wording of the original post could have been written differently, but Adora hurting and screaming at Catra once is still something that she should be held for doing, even if it's just the one time

I agree that characters should be properly held accountable for their actions. I can also see how Adora throwing Catra off the bed can be seen as inappropriate and immature behavior.

However, y'all may be reading way too deeply into this scene. It, in all intended purposes, is supposed to be two ex-bestfriends (sisters or whatever) hashing out their anger towards each other. It's supposed to be emotional and ugly. 'Shitty' behavior from both ends. Critics criticizing Catra’s behavior in this scene makes sense, only because she's behaved like this before. Adora, on the other hand, has not.

Shadow Weaver raising Adora obliviously has affected her behavior and instilled a lot of poor habits. Being violent and controlling (toxic and abusive) doesn't seem like one of them. We've never seen her behave like this before. And considering how she's been raised, it would make sense for her to lash out like this in seasons prior (you could even argue it's out of character for her to behave like this). The way she threw the mattress, the way she was angrily ranting to Glimmer and kicking boxes like a kid, it's not something that I recall her doing before. Some people may perpetuate the same behaviors as their abusers, but some don't, so I personally can't comprehend how this one scene indicates one or the other.

In regards to the head turn, Adora had her head turned for less than a second. Not even long enough to know if anyone may be close by, coming down the hallway. A conclusion was jumped here. Op assumed that she was checking the door, and that meant she knew what she's doing was wrong, but, how do you know? She could just not want to look at Catra for a moment, take a breath or anything. The scene lasted for about 0.5 seconds. That isn't a long enough scene to come to any conclusions.

Additionally, Op had said something along the lines as Catra deserves someone who doesn't use physical force to make her do what they want her to. I agree, but Adora doesn’t seem like that kind of person. She didn't force her to leave the Horde. She respected that choice. She didn't force her to go to Mystacor in one of the episodes after Taking Control (even though they needed to go). She handled it maturely and comforted her. While she had forced her to come with her in the portal episode, she was going to die if she didn't. In that same sequence, she tried to rationalize with her, saying they could fix it together. She wasn't being aggressive or forceful in any way, even though Catra pulled the lever.

OP's take left me confused. For me, it's not about Adora doing no wrong. It's about the fact that while what Adora did may be wrong, it's not as serious as OP claimed it to be. Not to be that person, but I genuinely don't think it's that deep.

friend, recently i came up with something that actually will blow up your mind after this:

C*tra stans, apart of being the most toxic person in the word, they are pedophiles ( for simping over a teenager ), zoophile ( simping over a cat that it's an animal ) and supports abusive relationships and promote abuse. Like they always said that " adults are smarter than kids because they know more better " but do they actually know what is be a redflag and a abusive person ? noooOOOooooooo. People are using different races(species) to say they have diverse body types. That's not diverse body types that's different species. If all the same species males are the same then its not diversity. These people have clearly never seen a motu show. There is divers on musculature and physique amongst the humans. But for spop? That's a no.

Someone reblogged that post and said "would love to see a fat guy but maybe this is not the show" ?? Like what does that mean? Why isn't this the show for it. You can have fat characters that are relevant to fighting a war. Fat muscular characters or fat characters with brains...like why wouldn't a fat characters work

Even if we want to be generous and say that the races in Spop are actually an important part of the worldbuilding, having characters of different races is not the same as body diversity.

A cartoon with characters each one of a different race and different etnicities but where everyone is thin is a cartoon that lacks body diversity.

A cartoon with characters who have diverse body types (thin, chubby, fat, muscular, tall, short, petite etc.) but where everyone is white except for one black character is a cartoon that lacks race diversity.

Allow me to introduce a character from the 80's She-ra.

His name is Swen, he's a member of Sea Hawk's crew and a recurring character. Maybe it's silly to point this out, but he's obviously fat and shorter compared to the other members of his crew. He could have been the perfect example of diverse body representation for men in Spop. Instead Nate or somebody else for him had a different plan.

Apparently here's how Swen looks like in the reboot. Don't get me wrong, she's lovely, but did they really have to genderswap the only fat male character that they could have in their show? For what? Five minutes of screentime with no lines before we find out that's Double Trouble? I'm sorry, that's just riddiculous.

My point stands. Spop has no diversity for body types when it comes to male characters and the only ones to blame are the crew-ra members.

might sound like a wild comparison but sometimes the way nate "confirms" headcanons and stuff reminds me of how some marvel directors try to explain plot holes or certain decisions only to create NEW plot holes, or contradict already canon things, or basically prove they do not know their own characters

I don't really understand the Bow manipulated Kyle discourse? Bow was kidnapped and imprisoned in the Horde at the time. It seems unfair to knock Bow for not being 'nice' when Bow was being held captive (his clothes were ripped up too if I'm remembering correctly, so he wasn't treated well there) and had no way of getting out. Personally, I wouldn't be in the eager to make new friends either.

Didn’t he have to manipulate him anyway? I mean, the Rebellion had broken in and were his (and Glimmer's) only way of escaping, so him distracting him makes sense?

Like, yeah, the Entrapta stuff was bad, but I don't see how Bow doing what, in my opinion, he needed to do to essentially survive proves he's not that nice of a person. I don't know, maybe it's just me?

y'all, I just remembered that Bow is the youngest of thirteen. Where did the other twelve go? Even when the world is quite literally ending, Bow shows no concern for or even mentions his brothers. His fathers don't mention them either. Not a single one.

What's the point of giving him siblings, especially that many, and not including them in the story some way. Especially in situations where it makes sense.

They could have easily made Bow's backstory involve these characters. In my rewrite, I plan(?) on having Bow have an older brother (only one because thirteen kids are way too many) who was killed by the Horde. This is the reason why he insists on fighting in the war. It is also the reason why his fathers are so against him being involved.

They could have easily added something like this in the reboot. Bow literally said in the second episode that "everyone has lost someone to the Horde."

Who did he lose? Where are his brothers? Are they okay? Does he not have a close relationship with them? I guess we'll never know.

okay so what is person is implying that catra was only bitter about adora's achievements because of the way they were pitted against each other. which is true enough but was catra actually treated better in the portal reality? if i remember correctly, she was treated pretty much the same. there was no indication that catra and adora were equally respected in the false reality.

this scene, to me, comes off as catra desperately trying to get on adora's good side so that she doesn't suspect anything. catra needs adora to stay in the horde and not find out that it was a false reality, so that the world would be destroyed as catra intended. to do this, catra needed to give adora a reason to stay in the horde, thus she's being really supportive and nice to adora.

If I remember correctly, Shadow Weaver was actually kind to Catra in this portal reality (I believe she lovingly caressed her face in one scene). As shown throughout the entirety of the series, Shadow Weaver's opinion is the only opinion that truly matters to Catra. So technically, op's not wrong, wrong. They were implied to be treated fairly and on equal playing fields in regards to Shadow Weaver. (But I might be wrong, idk)

One thing about Catra’s writing in season 5 that sticks out to me is that the writers genuinely don't seem to know how to write her personality now that she's a no longer a villain and that they don't view certain behavior as something she needs to unlearn but rather just how she is.

A lot of Catra’s personality relies on her being snarky, mocking others, being petty, and easily annoyed at times. She seems to be the SPOP writers' attempt a "little shit" type character. And it seems like the writers didn't want to change her personality too much, so they just had her continue certain behavior so that she's still a funky "little shit." Which led to her making comments about buying property in places the princesses aren't welcomed and commenting about how weak they are. These scenes are written as if they're supposed to be endearing, but these scenes completely contracts her redemption as well as make her no different from how she was before (same person, less war crimes). Bullying your enemy tracks when you're being a villain, but Catra isn't a villain anymore, she shouldn't be treating them that way. So, writing her make fun of the princesses when she has...

Actively worked with the dictator government that had attempted to destroy their homes countless times, fully aware of the government being evil.

Tried to kill one of their friends on multiple occasions

Is responsible for one of their friends' mom being trapped in a portal dimension for eternity (which is far worse than death in my opinion)

Helped lead an attack against their friend's kingdom, resulting in their kingdom being completely destroyed.

And countless other war crimes the show failed to mention.

...doesn't feel like the "little shit" behavior they're going for, it just feels like general shitty behavior. It's like the writers don't know how to make her "funny" without making her be an asshole. Somebody in that writing room either doesn't like Catra or everyone in that writing room shrugged and said, "eh, she's just like that," then put zero effort into her character because for some reason they can't seem to find any problem with the way she acts. (which is a major problem)

Can we talk about how bad a friend Perfuma is? (And I'm not just talking about how crappy she treated Entrapta.)

In season 5, Perfuma had acted all angry and heated over Catra being around, giving her side eyes and making off comments. But, if I'm remembering correctly, she had only done it because she treated Scorpia terribly. She didn't defend, or even mention, Adora, Glimmer, Entrapta, or Mermista.

Catra had tried to kill Adora on multiple occasions, but she says nothing.

Angella (Glimmer's mom!) is practically dead because of her. Crickets.

Entrapta was sent to die on a dangerous island, nada (which unfortunately makes sense considering she treated her poorly anyway).

Not only was Mermista's entire kingdom was completely destroyed not long before by a attack Catra had led, but also was chipped (just like Scorpia) and unable to confront her herself, yet not once does she mention her.

(Also, all of the Etherians Catra had killed or displaced during villain era. I guess the innocent civilians of Etheria just do not matter whatsoever.)

Now I'm not saying she shouldn't have defended Scorpia. However, she had supposedly been "friends" with them for three years, yet she defended none of them. She went on an entire tangent for someone she had only known for about two or three months at most. None of her other friends mattered. Only her new love interest did.

For a show that had the whole "friendship is power" message at the end of season 1, the writers clearly don't care about platonic relationships, only romantic ones. It's absolutely ridiculous.
