How to be a Dirtbag Fic Writer

I got to do some talking about writing today and I couldn’t stop thinking about it so here are my full thoughts on the matter of being a dirtbag fic writer.

Being the disorganized thoughts of someone two and a half decades into the beautiful mess that is writing fanfic (and a few non-fanfic things too).

One of my biggest pieces of advice for writing--or, really, for anything--is to learn to love the mechanics of it.

This is not to say that you need to love every second of every part of writing to be a good writer, but I find people who dislike the actual act of writing don't usually make good writers.

I think that this is, in part, where the AI stuff comes from--people who like the idea of writing but don't like (or know how to do) the mechanics of writing choose to rely on AI because they see it as handling the mechanics, which they see as the less important part.

But the mechanics are a huge part of it. The plot, the characters, the world, the idea--all of that is important. But writing is also about the paragraphs and the sentences and the words. It's about playing around with wording or sentence structure or phrasing to see what works best. It's about literally writing the sentences--all of the sentences. It's about choosing where the paragraph breaks are, where scenes end, where chapters end.

And if you hate doing the mechanics of it--if you hate putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard or however it is you draft--you will hate writing, and you will come to hate your writing. Because you will resent the actions required to do it. You will hate having to sit down and do the writing, because you hate actually writing.

There's nothing wrong with not enjoying actually writing. You can tell stories in other ways. Record a podcast. Sing. Tell stories to your friends.

Or teach yourself how to enjoy writing. Figure out what parts of it you do like and make those a bigger part of your process. Is text to speech easier? Do that to start. Do you not want chapter breaks for your first draft? That's fine.

Anyway, tl;dr: you will be a better writer and have a better time at it if you enjoy the mechanics of writing.

best advice I ever got about posting fics on ao3 is this:

never talk yourself out of the tags

never talk others out of the fic itself

which is to say, if you tag something, stick to it. your gut instinct is usually on the right path. don’t think about etiquette or whether it’s “too dark” or what people might comment. tags are indicators; removing them can affect readership (if that matters to you) AND it can influence whether you take out characters or tropes if you’re hesitating to hit publish.

if you’re tagging in good faith on your fic (e.g. not tagging Superman if he never shows up in the fic, using archive warnings correctly, etc) you’ll only talk yourself out of it the longer you stare at the tags.

and if you do write, tag, and publish a kickass fic, don’t add a summary trying to talk others out of reading it.

if you hit readers with a “this is awful I don’t even like it” or a “I’m probably going to take this fic down later idk” you just slapped a “don’t read me” sticker on your fic that’s probably way better than you think.

you thought it was important enough to not only write but to publish online — why would you start taking potshots at it?

“Bookmarks are for readers, I can say whatever I want in them” has the same energy as “I can say whatever I want in public, it’s not illegal.”

Like yeah, you can technically say whatever you want in public. But you’re not free from people judging you or being upset with what you say.

Which is to say. If you’re being a dick in the public bookmarks of someone’s fic, yes people are allowed to be upset. And no, you’re not cool or edgy or “honest.” You’re just an asshole who doesn’t know what a private bookmark is.
