Inspired by Sergio Cupido Romeo and Juliet art... but with Hannibal/Clarice
My favorite Hannibal (2001) lines from the original script that didn’t make it in the film
1: Crawford: (to Clarice) “He likes you, Starling. Seven years gone, not a trace, and he writes to you. You know what that means.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 81)
2: Crawford: (to Clarice) “The stalker who says he likes you is far more dangerous than the one who says he wants to kill you.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 81)
3: Hannibal: (to Clarice) “Will you stay with me in my prison cell? Hmmm? I suppose it wouldn’t be that much worse than yours.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 98)
4: Hannibal (to Clarice): “Don’t you want to harm those who have forced you to consider it? I know you never would, but wouldn’t you like to? Wouldn’t it feel good? It’s all right to admit it. It’s perfectly natural. To want to taste the enemy.” (2000 Draft Revision, Pg. 99)
5: Hannibal: (to Paul Krendler) “I assure you, though, you’ll love the second course, that is if I can serve it before Clarice bashes my head in.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 115)
6: Hannibal: (to Clarice) “No. I think a new life lies before you. A better life. With me? Hmmm, there’s a thought.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 117)
7: Hannibal: (to Clarice) “I came halfway around the world just to watch you run in the woods. Run with me, Clarice.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 117)
8: Hannibal: (to Clarice) “That’s my girl. If you hadn’t tried, I would have killed you… But don’t try again…I mean it.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 119)
9: Hannibal: (to Clarice) “Oh, Clarice, you are the honey in the lion. In times to come, whenever you see yourself naked, whenever you see the scar- the quality of the stitching - you’ll remember this moment - and your lips will burn.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 119)
10: Crawford: (to Clarice regarding her scar) “You don’t need to hide it. Your doctor did a nice job. You can hardly see it-.” (2000 Draft Revision, pg. 120)
He is soooo normal about her
So, can we talk a little bit about how Clarice's last name is Starling?
The Starling bird most people are familiar with is the Common Starling. During her first meeting with Hannibal, he says:
"And you'd hate to think you were common. Wouldn't that sting? My! Well, you're far from common, Officer Starling. All you have is fear of it."
Clarice was warned to not let Hannibal Lecter inside of her head but Starlings are an invasive species.
Clarice's invasion didn't cause destruction but she entered his life and never left him. He escaped but wrote her letters. He checked 3 newspapers every week for 7 years to see if she wrote him back. Clarice ended up in his home, spending his money, living in his mind.
Someone should have warned Hannibal about Starlings.

“Did you hurt yourself?” “No, I-” “You have on a fresh Band-Aid, Clarice.” Then she remembered. “I got a scrape on the side of the pool swimming today.” The Band-Aid was out of sight, on her calf beneath her trousers. He must smell it. - The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris

The quote “When the fox hears the rabbit scream he comes running. But not to help” is actually originally from the movie Hannibal and it was spoken by Mason Verger of all people. The original quote goes more like this:
“When the fox hears the rabbit scream he comes a-runnin'... but not to help”
It was said in context to Mason’s scheming by using Clarice and causing her trouble with the FBI on purpose so Lecter would latch onto the bait. As a predatory creature, he wouldn’t be able to resist chasing after the bait that is Clarice to get what he wants.
In the show’s context, Hannibal told this to Will to question his instincts on what he would do if Jack screamed for help on the night of their dinner. Would he come over to help or would he go because there is something to be gained by hunting him down with Hannibal? It’s a layered question and a continued conversation from before about if Will is really going to kill Jack to escape into freedom with Hannibal or if his humanity would prevent him from doing so.
When the time comes, can he do what needs to be done?
This is a very important question to think about because after everything that happened on the night of Mizumono, Hannibal more or less got his answer after Jack screamed.
And I think that’s one of the more tragic parts of Mizumono. Who was the rabbit in this situation in the end? Was it Jack? Was it Hannibal? From Hannibal’s perspective, he may have very well been the rabbit. He screamed and Will didn’t come to help. He came to hunt him down.
It’s a layer of vulnerability in this entire betrayal because the hunter seemingly became the hunted. The fox was always going to be Will.
The quote actually originally comes from the book Hannibal by Thomas Harris and it's spoken by Dr. Doemling. Mason gathered his sister, Barney, Doemling, and Krendler together to try to figure out how best to lure in Hannibal. The full quote is:
"If you want to make Clarice Starling attractive to Dr. Lecter, let him see her distressed," Doemling said. "Let the damage he sees suggest the damage he could do. Seeing her wounded in any symbolic way will incite him like seeing her play with herself. When the fox hears a rabbit scream, he comes running, but not to help."
This is after Doemling talks about how Hannibal only responds to her when she's distressed, but Barney points out that Hannibal respects Clarice, likes her, finds her charming, amusing, and that she will become more. Barney reminds them that Hannibal already responded to her distress with a letter where "he calls her a warrior, and points out that she saved that child in the shoot-out." Doemling insists that can't be true and Barney is romanticizing their relationship because "Hannibal Lecter does not have emotions like admiration or respect. He feels no warmth or affection."
Clarice even knew he already responded to her distress.
What else did Dr. Lecter have a taste for, that Starling knew a lot about? He likes me, she thought. How quickly he had responded to her plight. Even considering the delay from using a remailing service to write to her.
Clarice is the one that responds to distress by rushing to the rescue. Not Hannibal. She is imprinted by the plight of the screaming lambs.
Her obsessive and successful hunt for Jame Gumb was driven by the plight of his captive. She had saved him from torture for the same reason.
Hannibal was not going to rush to Clarice's side to save her. He was happy in Florence and was a bit bummed to be forced to leave. Clarice and Hannibal are both foxes when it comes to each other but they do in fact come to help. He wrote her a letter of encouragement at the first sign of her plight, she disregarded orders and saved him from being tortured (and she killed a cop while doing it), and he in turn rescued her from being eaten by the boars while she was unconscious. Later, when Barney sees them living happily together, he leaves the country immediately because he knows he is dead if either one of them see him.
I guess consider this a little lesson in canon.

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS at 30
♡ “It was my idea to release that film on Valentine’s Day.” – Jonathan Demme ♡ “The scenes between Lecter and Clarice play…as if they were lovers.” – Ted Tally
The Silence of the Lambs débuted in cinemas on February 14, 1991. Hannibal Lecter mentions Valentine’s Day – and considers sending heroine Clarice Starling “a wonderful Valentine” – several times in the novel. (Unfortunately, these lines didn’t make it onto the big screen.) 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of this iconic film and its “perverse sort of love story” in the words of Silence writer Ted Tally, whose screenplay won an Oscar.
