launch day
Guess who finished the Project Hail Mary book and rewatched the movie?
The Artemis II crew naming two previously undiscovered lunar craters (one after Commander Reid Wiseman's late wife).
I'm just... I'm reblogging this again because I keep bursting into tears because I just keep thinking about his KIDS.
This is Reid Wiseman with his two daughters, Ellie and Katherine. They lost Carroll to cancer just a few years ago. I know lots of people are saying what a sweet and romantic gesture it is for Reid, but... for me? I think about his daughters.
Can you imagine losing your mom when you're barely a teenager*, but knowing now that when you look up at the moon on the right nights, you'll be able to see a little bright spot that proves that humanity will remember how much your family loved her? That the whole world is going to feel that with their whole hearts?
What a beautiful gift that must be! What a remarkable moment, five years removed from the worst of the pain and grief, to have this monument to her memory, to your love for her, shared with the universe and all of posterity?
Carroll Wiseman was a NICU nurse and a beloved wife and mother and friend to everyone on the Artemis II mission crew and though she's gone, many nights they'll all be able to look up and say 'hey' to her memory. What a kindness.
If I wasn't already thrilled about NASA getting press for a big bold launch like this, this'd do it.

*I think; NASA is good about respecting the privacy of astronaut families so everything I've shared here is based on what little is available, which is good tbh.
On the Nasa livestream of the Artemis mission, one of the astronauts just pointed out that they can see the moon out one window and the earth out another and the scale difference is crazy. Mission control replied: "Amaze, amaze, amaze."
I could barely even pay attention while watching Project Hail Mary because I was so distracted by Stratt's lethal facecard
i need ryland going swimming in his erid enclosure once they get the water temperature right like :D this is great, it's full-body exercise for my recovery and it helps a lot with the issue of gravity being so intense on me
meanwhile rocky and 8 other eridians (heavy enough to sink instantly to the bottom of any large body of water) are standing on the shore, incredibly distressed, needing to be constantly reassured that this is normal for humans and he won't sink and drown
"are you sure you don't need an air tank and a suit???" "i am so sure. you can literally see me floating right now. i know for a fact sound travels great through water"
they still won't let him swim with the wave machine on but he'll wear em down eventually
Given how humanity reacts to life in general, can we picture the INSANELY good memes that would have been made in the Martian universe while they tried to rescue Watney?
Gotta do everything my damn self in this house smh
On my Martian bullshit again
My man Mark would record a video discussing life in the Hab and talk about Lewis’s music, and proceed to give an example. Mark Watney would Rickroll the entire Internet from another planet.
it's been a while
did anyone else have that movie tie in app for the Martian when it came out in 2015 where you roleplayed working for nasa and it was your job to talk him through problems and tell him not to lose hope and stuff. I was in high school playing that thing and he’d die while I was in class and it was really stressful but it’s a core memory. does anyone else remember this. it was like mark watney tamagotchi
I was too young to watch this movie when it came out so ofc I wanted to find it now that I’ve read the book and it doesn’t exist anymore :( Lost media fr but ig it costs money to keep an app up if it’s not being used for marketing anymore.
However I highly recommend reading Close to Home by Glowstick on AO3 bc not only is it one of the the best fics I’ve ever read (and I have over 2000 bookmarks) but it’s also kind of a time capsule that heavily references the app in the story and in the author’s notes.
Can we include darebee.com with ao3 and wikipedia on our list of really good nonprofits with excellent services that we stan?
It's a free, no sign-up, no ads fitness resource created by professionals who view this as activism (fitness should be accessible to everyone), and it's very thoughtful and thorough.
Features I really like:
- all instructions for workout routines are diagrammed on single pages with a clean, easy to read layout
- there's 30 or 60 day programs you can follow if you, like me, don't know what to do. they take you through a rotation of workouts so you're working different muscle groups on different day for a specific purpose
- there's so much variety and there's a filter so you can find the level and your goals and type of workout you wanna do
- you don't need any equipment
- some of the programs are RPGs or adventure stories! How's that for motivation. There's also badges and achievements or something but I haven't looked that closely at how that works yet
- they're nerds. they name workouts after D&D classes. There's a Lannistrr workout, a batcave workout, a witcher workout
- I've only scratched the surface
I'm doing this really easy one to start out

Just checked it out since I’ve been looking for a good exercising resource, and found that they are struggling to pay the bills!! They’re at 11% of their required funding level for this month, which is dipping well into their emergency fund.
If you use this site or want to support keeping them online, consider taking the time to make even a small donation.

thinking about the rancor handler at the beginning of ROTJ mourning his monster's death is foreshadowing for Luke and Vader
@dandelionsandderivatives yes of course!
We're all familiar with the scene at the beginning of ROTJ where Luke beats the mighty beast that looks like something out of space Jurassic park. It has a face that one might say only a mother could love.
Everything about this creature emphasizes how monstrous it is. There's obviously the design, but there's also the fact that it is Jabba's method of destroying those who displease him. The horror is mild, but there are undertones of monster movie-esque themes in the scene. Luke waiting for the rancor to emerge from the shadows, etc etc. For all that, it's typical action movie stuff, and it ends in a moment that the audience might find a little humorous. After Luke defeats the rancor in a Jedi hero moment, the movie turns to the rancor keeper - who cries over the monster's death.
It's a ludicrous contrast, and although perhaps a bit touching, more funny than anything else. Monsters are meant to be beaten - what else would you do with one? Even this monster had someone who loved him is the underlying message, but there is a little bit of "pet owner of savage dog" type thing going on. I would say it's primarily meant to be humorous in the moment. After all, who would mourn the death of a brutal monster?
Fast forward to the last part of the movie, though, and all of a sudden...
Much like the rancor keeper, Luke is alone in his grief. A major theme of ROTJ is how solitary his journey is. He's set apart from the others. Although I would argue the potentially scorching hot take that Leia would also feel grief over Vader (just an entirely different grief), Luke stands alone.
If we turn back to the rancor keeper and his grief for an attack monster now (notably, a monster kept at the beck and call of a corrupt ruler), it suddenly has a new light, and the question implicit in the moment - monsters are meant to be beaten; after all, what else would you do with one? - suddenly has a new answer.
