Red Spiral Ginger

Cheilocostus lacera (syn. Hellenia lacera) AFAIK, no official common name.

I find that it doesn't do very well potted in the long term; root system likes to be wide sprawling and very shallow. Which I guess in hindsight is standard fare for many Zingiberales, also why it seems to be used as path-side planting mostly.

2026 update;

It does poorly in directly exposed outdoors (too dry, also gets torn by wind easily). Some shelter under a larger plant seems to be ideal. Also found that this thing loves bathing in organic matter, I threw a few cuttings into an outdoor compost heap. They just live there now and have taken over said compost heap (its a semi-shaded area).

In recent years there's been the discovery of some very large trees in temperate Asia. Shown in video, there's a few individuals of Taiwania cryptomerioides that are in ~80m range. There's also a Himalayan Cypress in Tibet that entered the 100m+ club. Known species, but new records. Also both are Cupressaceae members.

The most interesting question you can ask about any character is not what do they want. it's what do they believe they deserve. because those two things are almost never the same and the gap between them is where your entire story lives. a person can want love completely and believe they don't deserve it and that belief will destroy every good thing that comes toward them in ways they won't even notice they're doing. write the gap. the gap is the character.

The problem with things being described as smelling/tasting of orchid is it could technically refer to a full bodied floral, something spicy and very powdery, absolutely nothing, or literal rotting carcass
