People say your favorite characters are only your favorite because you see yourself in them. This scared me for a while because Vox was my favorite. This is what Iād say to him if I met him.
All I could do was stare, for the longest time thatās all that I could do. I couldnāt move my limbs, speak a word. Just stare at that flat faced demon. He seemed to have a similar reaction.
āWhat? You look like youāve seen a ghost?ā
Maybe I did. Maybe thatās what I was looking at. Finally I found the courage to speak.
āI hate you.ā
His face, that flat screen of pixels and judgement, twisted into something akin to amusement. He laughed in my face.
āHate me? How could anyone hate me?! Iām a god! Iām the best! Iām Vox! How could anyone hate me?! Let alone you. Iām your idol. Iām what you aspire to be!ā
āNo.ā I said sharply. āYouāre not who I aspire to be. Maybe once, but not now.ā My words were sharp, yet my voice quivered. āI was once like you. I wanted the spotlight, I wanted attention. I gave up my vulnerability to a man I thought I could trust. And he broke me. He took so much from me, for almost a decade. Because of that I closed myself off from the world! I had no friends, my family hated me, I hated the world and just wanted to hurt. I wanted to be hurt and I wanted to hurt others.ā
At this Vox had paused, staring for a moment in bewilderment. Then he shrugged. āSo? Why does that remind you of me? What do I have to do with this? Sounds like youāre describing Alastor, not me.ā

I paused. He was right. He was a man once, and he chose his path. Maybe I didnāt need to be a monster. Maybe I could be the person standing behind it.
