Baz says “I’ve wanted this with Simon since I knew how to want” and I think Simon is on the same boat, except Simon has wanted this with Baz even before he knew how to want.

It’s another way in which expectations are challenged: Baz wasn’t miserable alone while “the object of his affections was happy with someone else.” Simon was miserable too. Simon never loved or wanted anyone else either, not really. Not romantically, not sexually. He desperately wanted to be happy in a heterosexual relationship that looked like success and fit in. They were both surviving: Simon trying to hold on to an idea of security and stability he has never had, because he spent too long feeling abandoned and left behind. (Curiously enough, Simon liked being “special” in his role of hero, but he didn’t want “special” in this part of his life, the part that it’s supposed to give him a sense of normalcy, because it means being different and not fitting in). Baz was surviving too: letting his feelings be know but not letting it be know who he has those feelings for is also survival. It’s fear, it’s protecting himself.

Baz knew he wanted Simon. He knew he loved him, and it made him miserable. Simon genuinely didn’t know he wanted Baz, but he was miserable all the same. Simon didn’t (romantically) like/love two people at the same time: one was scary because he awoke too much, he threatend all rules and structures Simon depended on; the other offered the comfort of nothingness, perfectly manageable because she did not awaken anything in Simon. His feelings for Baz were too scary and big and he had no tools to understand; his pain was potentiated by having Baz so close but not having him, even before he knew he wanted to have him.

I wanted to give myself the challenge of creating a book cover design, and making the mock-up was fun. I’m not sure how I feel about the overall look.. maybe it’s a bit too busy? I really wanted to have Watford in the background and the dragon wings, and details like Penelope’s ring. Simon is secretly wearing his trainers but they got hidden by the title banner 🤦‍♂️

I love how much illustration is being used on the covers of YA fiction right now. Having my artwork on a queer YA book cover would be a dream.

(I’m about to get mushy, so beware) Picking a quote from this series for my graduation cap was a no-brainer for me. This series has had an insane impact on my life, to the point where I genuinely don’t know where I’d be without it. From first picking Carry On up the week I turned 15, to having to physically restrain myself from reading WS in one sitting because it was my first hard week of college as a freshman, to reading AWTWB in one sitting the day it released despite being on a family vacation. From starting a sideblog, to making art and fics about it with my sister, and to looking through art or fics when I was having a panic attack to help me calm down. To the amazing community I’ve found online with the most talented and kind people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. My life has been fundamentally changed for the better because I decided to pick up Carry On in January 2016, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

With the release of RWRB’s movie premier date, here are some of my crackish predictions about the worst way CO could be adopted into a movie:

They combine Agatha and Penny’s character and make her white, but Dev and Niall stay separate characters (also both white)

Fiona is played by an actress younger than Baz

Baz’s widow’s peak has to be CGI’ed in

Simon’s hair is blonde and not curly

Simon gets wings but no tail

The Mage is played by Daniel Craig and Colin Firth plays Malcolm and Christina never sleeps again because she’s too busy writing malmage for the rest of her life

Lucy’s ghost isn’t included

They never mention Professor Minos; a tragedy

No fireplace kiss

They combine Mitali and Mrs Wellbelove’s characters and never explain it even though they’re married to two different men

In fact they add in an original male character with no plot relevance, who is also white

The mage is morally gray and we’re meant to swoon for him.

Baz isn’t part-Egyptian. His family is entirely white.

Fiona gets no humorous lines and we barely even learn her name. The only thing we are told about her is that she has a hot vampire boyfriend. Her internal conflict over her sister is completely ignored.
